First stages of labor has begun!
 
Day 62 and first signs of labor has begun! Her temp has been 98.6 since last night. This morning she has left very small spots of loose poop, refused her food and has started periodically shaking. She has refused her whelping box in the back bedroom for the comfy doggy bed in the living room where everyone is at. The other dogs seem to be nervously checking on her. My older male Maltese keeps trying to give her a small toy.

Nervous Gramma-to-be!!! :D

It sounds like early stages of labor. It is important that you put her in a area completely away from other dogs. She needs to concentrate on having her pups without worrying about other dogs bothering her. When my girls go into labor I put them in a quiet place and I will just sit and observe them. They will do panting and digging once the labor starts. I try to watch them without interfering. Once the hard labor starts and the momma is pushing really hard I watch closely to see if the puppy is starting to make an appearance. How long it takes really depends on the momma's size and the size of the pups inside her.

Once I see the puppy starting to come out I stay right with the momma so that I can take over once the puppy makes an appearance. I always cut the puppy's cord myself because it can be risky letting the momma do it.

I was able to get her into the back bedroom and she is resting on a blanket in the closet. Whelp box is right outside the closet ready when she is. I have all my equipment laid out close by ready to assist when the time is right. I'm checking on her periodically.

Her vet said it 'should' be an easy delivery for her. She is (was..lol) 7.5 lbs and the daddy is 4.5 lbs. Quite a cute couple actually. :D

I only let my mommas eat one, MAYBE two of the placentas.....if they eat all of them, they will vomit it all up and/or it gives them diarrhea.....they do need the hormones they get from the placentas....and it stimulates milk production and bonding feelings with the babies....I too cut my own cords because an over enthusiastic momma can actually eviscerate a pup, trying to sever the cord....also, umbilical hernias are a concern with allowing momma to chew and tug on those cords.

Same here. I try to get the placentas before the mom eats them.

Unless her vet is familiar with the pedigree of the dogs behind the breeding pair, it is nothing more than a wild guess on the size of those babies. My tiny stud, Boss,was just 3 lbs....but he threw puppies 5-7 lbs because of a particular line behind him.....the best way to determine the size of the puppies and the size of the females pelvic ring (birth canal which the babies must pass through) is to have an xray done and ratios measured. Too late for that now! Watch her closely for problems.....have that vet on speed dial!

I have had some bigger yorkies get into trouble delivering pups. There are so many things that can go wrong. Sometimes a pup will get sideways and not be able to come out. Breached births can be tricky too.

We had an ultrasound at 7 weeks and he said the pups were healthy. She is actually the biggest in her line for several generations and all her littermates are 4-5 lbs. Daddy comes from a line of teacups for several generations. Keeping my fingers crossed for easy deliveries, but prepared to watch for complications.
Her vet advised letting her eat every other placenta and keeping track of the number expelled.
I plan on cutting the umbilical cords myself to be safe. I have raised and whelped toy poodles in the past, but this is my first Yorkie litter and afraid for any chance of her chewing them too close and hurting the baby.

First litter....afraid I'm in for a long day! But very excited!

How many pups is she carrying? If she eats more than a couple, be prepared to clean old bloody vomit up from the pups area, before the babies get in it or momma eats it again.....! Keeping fingers crossed for you.....

I try to count placentas but in the commotion of birthing I sometimes lose track. As Yorkiemom1 said, letting her eat a couple is good, but she will make mess from eating too much of that good thing. Good luck, keep the babies warm between births. It's taken me many years to learn my girls want me within arm's reach when they're whelping, but the past few litters I've been a little less "hands on" with good results. Step in when Mom is obviously not doing her job, otherwise just be there for comfort and to supply clean bedding.
