First stages of labor has begun! Day 62 and first signs of labor has begun! Her temp has been 98.6 since last night. This morning she has left very small spots of loose poop, refused her food and has started periodically shaking. She has refused her whelping box in the back bedroom for the comfy doggy bed in the living room where everyone is at. The other dogs seem to be nervously checking on her. My older male Maltese keeps trying to give her a small toy. Nervous Gramma-to-be!!! :D |
It sounds like early stages of labor. It is important that you put her in a area completely away from other dogs. She needs to concentrate on having her pups without worrying about other dogs bothering her. When my girls go into labor I put them in a quiet place and I will just sit and observe them. They will do panting and digging once the labor starts. I try to watch them without interfering. Once the hard labor starts and the momma is pushing really hard I watch closely to see if the puppy is starting to make an appearance. How long it takes really depends on the momma's size and the size of the pups inside her. Once I see the puppy starting to come out I stay right with the momma so that I can take over once the puppy makes an appearance. I always cut the puppy's cord myself because it can be risky letting the momma do it. I pray all goes well for you. |
I was able to get her into the back bedroom and she is resting on a blanket in the closet. Whelp box is right outside the closet ready when she is. I have all my equipment laid out close by ready to assist when the time is right. I'm checking on her periodically. |
Her vet said it 'should' be an easy delivery for her. She is (was..lol) 7.5 lbs and the daddy is 4.5 lbs. Quite a cute couple actually. :D |

We had an ultrasound at 7 weeks and he said the pups were healthy. She is actually the biggest in her line for several generations and all her littermates are 4-5 lbs. Daddy comes from a line of teacups for several generations. Keeping my fingers crossed for easy deliveries, but prepared to watch for complications. Her vet advised letting her eat every other placenta and keeping track of the number expelled. I plan on cutting the umbilical cords myself to be safe. I have raised and whelped toy poodles in the past, but this is my first Yorkie litter and afraid for any chance of her chewing them too close and hurting the baby. First litter....afraid I'm in for a long day! But very excited! |
:-) hoping everything goes well for mama! Can't wait to see pictures! |

Just sending well wishes for an uneventful and easy whelp! Can't wait to see them! |
Best wishes- I try to count placentas but in the commotion of birthing I sometimes lose track. As Yorkiemom1 said, letting her eat a couple is good, but she will make mess from eating too much of that good thing. Good luck, keep the babies warm between births. It's taken me many years to learn my girls want me within arm's reach when they're whelping, but the past few litters I've been a little less "hands on" with good results. Step in when Mom is obviously not doing her job, otherwise just be there for comfort and to supply clean bedding. |
Also, sending well wishes for a safe and easy whelping for mamma and healthy puppies. |
Any news yet? |
Well, we have 6 BEAUTIFUL babies!! Water broke at 6pm and the first one was born at 6:18. The next 2 came back to back at 6:45 and 6:50. At this point I was a little worried because none of the placentas came out. At 8:15 the next one was born with a wad of placentas right behind. She ate those before I could make sure there were 3 of them. An hour later at 9:13 we have our 5th bundle and I thought we were done...until I saw a knot in her side move. Sure enough at 10:08 we have another one! Male .5 oz Male .45 oz Female .4 oz Male .35 oz Male .35 oz Female .4 oz Everything went smooth even though 3 of the puppies were breech, one sucked in fluid before I could grab him and Momma kept trying to continue to chew on the umbilical cords, making them bleed. I got the fluid out of the one and applied slight pressure to the cords she chewed to stop the bleeding. All in all she had an easy delivery...breech puppies even came out smoothly and fast. Tired Gramma here, but very happy to have healthy babies. |

Congratulations, wow that is a big litter. So glad they are all ok. Hope you all get some sleep now. Your lil momma looks so much like my Tiki, I did a double take. |

Oops! Accidental post |
Congratulations, so happy whelping was successful and no complications. Beautiful litter, beautiful momma. |
Congratulations. I am glad all went well. What calcium supplement will you be giving her? Calcium will be very important since she has a large litter. I use Doc Roy's Healthy Bones from Revival. |
I feed all my dogs Science Diet dry dog food normally. My vet suggested mixing Science Diet puppy food with hers along with a cooked egg twice a day the last 2 weeks of her pregnancy and while nursing. I agree an additional supplement is a good idea and can never hurt. I have never heard of Doc Roy products? |
Just noticed the whelping pudding mix recipe! I actually have most of these ingredients on hand. I think I will make a run to the store and pick up the rest. Wonderful recipe! I fed her egg mixed with boiled chicken breast meat, but will start her on this recipe as well as a calcium supplement. Thank you for all the wonderful thoughts, advice and prayers. Not much sleep last night for either momma or myself, but she is going to be a good little momma. |
Doc Roy's Healthy Bones is a calcium supplement tablet sold at Pet Health Supplies | Pet Supplies | Revival Animal Health. I buy a lot of my pet supplies from them. Your vet might sell Pet-cal. I highly recommend getting something asap. Also from Revival I recommend having some Oral Cal Plus. It is very important to have some on hand just in case your girl gets eclampsia. Also to help prevent eclampsia it is important that your momma eats about 4 meals a day. I feed mine a dry puppy food that I soak in warm water and I add some canned food with it. Some mommas are very picky about eating after having pups. Sometimes the only way my spoiled girls will eat is if I sit there and hand feed them. Try to make sure your girl eats her last meal right before bedtime. Most cases of eclampsia occur in the morning after the pups have sucked on the momma all night. I usually feed mine around 9 at night. Sometimes I get up in the middle of the night to feed the momma again if she is nursing a lot of puppies. |
My little girl is definitely spoiled! She has been getting chicken breast and an egg every day since over a week before whelping along with a teaspoon of peanut butter (organic, which she LOVES) and Science Diet puppy food. I have now added the whelping pudding mix listed here and she LOVES that as well. I did order some Breeder's Edge Oxy Momma and Breeder's Edge Oral Cal Plus 30mL Calcium Supplement. Called my vet (at home...he loves that I am so protective..LOL) and he agreed these are good additions to her normal diet. She and new babies will be visiting with him Tuesday morning. Momma is doing well, bright eyed and being a good momma. Babies seem to be content and keeping warm cuddled up next to her. |
