Tail Docking I would like to get feedback from breeders who dock their puppies tails and dew claws themself. Do you have instructions on how to dock tails and dew claws? What tools do you use and how to do it? Information would be greatly appreciated. |
tail docking I use a small surgical clamp outside the gold on the underside of the tail..depends on the length you perfer. remember clamping length and cutting length are different. Leave clamp for a couple mins...then hold the tail by the base where the clamp is and hold the end of tail. Twist off, might take 10 turns. Leave clamp on another couple mins and remove. No need to surture,m no blood or open wound. I have never had any infection. Do the same for the dew claws..use a small clamp to get a good hold on the claw..they are so tiny. Good luck |
i know there is a bog controversy over this, but darn i wish toby's dew claws had been removed, i cut toby's nails myself, and sometimes i just forget that they are there so i forget to cut them, i caught them yesterday and they were maybe a weeks worth of growth away from circling back into his skin  i felt like such a bad mama |
Orinskye You can still have your baby's dew claws removed surgically by your vet. |
Surgical Scapel and cut and the end of the brown patch. I also stitch the end so it will be more round when older. The dew claws I use sharp fingernail clippers. |
My vet docked the tails This is my first litter and I went to the vet to dock the tails and declaw. I thought since the puppies were so young that it would be fast and clean. I left the puppies back with the vet for 10 mins. and when he called me back, I walk in and there is blood on his hands and on the puppies, and he had stitched up the tails. He gave me no instructions. Is this normal? Are all dockings like this? |
tails Yes...few vets use the bloodless method, why puzzles me. Read the beginning of this thread for a simplier way to do it. |
do the puppies scream when this is done? sounds awful. |
Does anyone have any pictures of their yorkie's without their tales docked? |
Tail Docking Thanks for all of the info. Where can I buy a surgical clamp? Thank you again for the posts. |
Re: Milo's Comment There is a website created by the Anti-Dociking Alliance. It shows pictures of many different breeds of dogs whose tails are usually docked with tails. Here is the link to the picture site: http://www.anti-dockingalliance.co.uk/page_5.htm On that site, scroll down to the yellow box titled "Toy" #6 is the Yorkie. Click on all the links under Yorkie, including the words Yorkshire Terrier. The links take you to a page of one or more pictures of Yorkies with tails. They are adorable! |
Their tails are cute! :p |
Cute I know, aren't they? I wish my Yorkies tail hadn't been docked before we got him! |
When I was talking to the lady we bought buddy from on the phone she was telling me about his dew claws and tail already having been done, I didn't really know what that meant till she showed and explained it to me, but I sorta wish his tail was original... Either way hes just too cute to me (even being a mix breed). The dewclaws (I was told but not 100% sure) just get in the way for the dog, is that correct? Bill |

The method I was taught by my mentor is similar to Pat's except we use a small rubber band as a clamp on the tail, and then remove the dew claws with small surgical scissor, daub on some clotisol, and then quick scissor snip for the tail and another daub of clotisol on the end. No stitches, very little bleeding and usually no cries. I heat up a bag of uncooked rice in the microwave and wrap it in towels and put it in a big bowl beforehand, so there is a warm spot for them to be placed after sorry kisses. After a minute or so we remove the rubber band and keep checking for bleeding for about 15 minutes until they go back to mom. Mom's won't lick the clotisol, but we keep a close eye on the tails and claws just in case. Also keep the rubbing alchohol handy to sterilize everything (rubber bands, scissors etc..). |
You guys are brave, I think that if I ever had puppies I would just let the vet do them. I'm a wus when it comes to hurting them, even though they say it's relativly painless  ... |
it's godawful and I hate doing it, but I don't like to expose them or the momma to a stressful trip to the vet at this time if I don't have to. So it's deep breaths a quick prayer for guidance and off we go. I just wish they would change the guidelines the way they have in Europe and eliminate docking altogether. The pup I gave my mom for mothers day has hers and it's lovely. I didn't dock her 'cause I knew where she was headed. |
It is scary when you see blood and your puppies in the same picture!! I also use the surgical clamps for tails and dew claws. Don't want to take my babies to the vet where there are so many SICK dogs. I hold my puppies the entire time I am docking and they really do not like being held on their backs..that is when they cry and squirm to get right side up. I do keep a suture handy in case there is bleeding from the tail and in all the years I have used it once..That was in the beginning and I took the clamp off too soon. There is no bare spot on the end of the tail when the clamp is used but the little bit of flesh that is in the clamp will dry up and get knocked off of I can twist it off after a week or two. This procedure is very much like we used to doint the delivery room for humans and later when the umbilical cord dries up and is ready to come off.. I did try using the rubber band ONCE but I could not manage to be quick about it and hold my baby to do the wrapping. The clamp is zip! and you're done and you just wait to finish the job. I do not have help when I do the tails, etc. |
Question? Why do you dock your Yorkies tail? What are the advantages of docking your Yorkies tail if any at all? |
tails I perfer a docked tail, but that is because you really do not see them in the ring without the tails being according to the standard. Docking is bloodless now with the clamp method and new lasers. |

originally tail docking was done as a preventive measure as to not damage the tail on hunting dogs, then hygiene, then breed standard. |

Thats kinda what i was getting at but i couldn't think of it |
Hey, credit where credit is due...I realized after reading Rini's post that I did NOT mention the fact that I have HELP. I don't know how she does it by herself...I feel like I need six hands of my own even with help. Tom usually does the scissor work, while I do the prep and the holding and the clotisol and the kisses. He can't stand holding them 'cause he doesn't like the way you can feel the snip through their little bodies. It's really gruesome and I can't stand it either, but somebody's gotta. Geez, I should really move to France. |
tails I don't even take them out of the bed from mom...they lay there and I dock them while they nurse..they cry a bit, but go right back to the nipple. I perfer, no help. |
I dont know how you guys can do it...@ 5 days I take mine to the vet and have them lasered along with the declaws and their first vet check...so easy, no muss no fuss! ok I am a whimp on some things, my toes curl, my tummy turns and my eyes cross with the thought of doing it myself...and believe me that is not a pretty picture:) |
Pat and Rini, you are my heroes. How do you keep the momma from trying to 'help' you, or is it a magical mystery trick....lol? |

I have never done this but have been told that you can tie fishing line tight on the dew claw and they will die from no blood flow and come off. Has anyone ever done this??? And can this be done with adult as well as pup? Thanks Tauni |
