(I have it bookmarked now :thumbup: ) Yes, that does do well at defining the difference between the different breeder types...and reminds me of how much I am in awe of those who are classified as the "Reputable, Experienced Breeder." (I do think that 'reputable' can be extended to the "Hobby Breeder," as defined in the chart as well though... :)

yes me too. but i just felt when i first read this thread that, gosh...we all know this by now, right? i knew who was what before i really even had any experience...and since then, i've really learned.

Sorry if you felt this thread was redundent. I posted it because I have heard different terms and wanted to discuss it with others.

That was kind of my problem with it when I first read it. It doesn't seem to consider Hobby breeders as Reputable or experienced, but I agree that some hobby breeders are definitely reputable and experience.

I consider show breeders hobby breeders too since showing is a hobby and show breeders supposedly don't make money at it so why wouldn't they be hobby breeders.

I still there is a lot of confusion about all the definitions and it never hurts to see what others think. I have struggled with these definitions for a year now and it is a common topic of new threads.

The majority of show breeders do make money. Regardless if they want to say so or not. The marjority of pups in a litter is going to be pet quality. What do you think they do with those pups? If I am able to fulfill my dream of showing someday, i'll be the first to admit if I make any money. Yes, I understand their show fees are not cheap. But they do make money. No one will convince me otherwise. Unless they only show the dogs they own and do not breed them. I'm on a quest for the truth tonight I guess.

Ha! If you manage to find it...please let me know! There seems to be alot of dishonestly and, hmmm :rolleyes: .....how should I put it, "not just saying what you really want to say?" going on around here lately. ;)

The way I read it, it implies that hobby breeders are very reputable by the practices the chart describes. The difference between them and the Reputable Experienced breeder seems to be the reputation and experience they gain over time. Committed hobby breeders can move up to that level and are involved with clubs and mentoring etc.

"Show breeders" are probably not a classification b/c many types of breeders show their dogs. I met a show breeder that totally makes her living off of her dogs and others who only have one litter a year. For the dedicated hobby breeder and reputable experienced breeder, money is not their motive. They turn around and use any money they make on litters to support their hobby, which is their dogs. (showing, carrying for, stud fees, breeding, vet bills, handler fees...etc.)

Once you start making a true income off of anything it isn't considered a hobby anymore correct?

I think we probably overuse the Show Breeder term, I know I do. Glad this chart cleared things up for me.

A show breeder can have a substantial bill to finish a dog. If you have more then one out at a time you are talking a sizeable chunck of change. Buster is entered in 3 shows this month- being owner handled. The fees for the 3 shows was close to $80.00. Add in parking, gas, food, supplies and going back and forth for the three days ( and this is for local shows) and you have over $125.00 for the weekend. This is a bargain weekend.

The further the shows add more expenses in for hotels, more gas more food, wear and tear on your car and possibly handler fees. Try doing this several times a month. The average person has a hard time with the expense.

Do some make money well it may look like it- but when you turn around and reinvest it bak into your dogs you have not. If you were lucky the profits helped to pay for this addicting and expensive hobby.

Am I tickled when I place a puppy- yep I sit and figure what I can do with this- how many shows will this pay for and plan my schedule for Peggy ( handler) May sit and think I really like a certain dog and would love to have a puppy from this breeding. Pay stud fees that range from $500.00 to $1,500.00 and not get a puppy. In some instances can not get a rebreeding and have flushed that investment down the toilet.
