Not wrong!! You just can not make certain of the amount of formula baby is getting....you cant know for certain how many calories you are giving per feeding! No, you did fine and were fortunate to have one that WOULD nurse a bottle.....and pup is gaining weight and you had to make up lost ground...You are fine and your baby is fine....you can just expect a slower weight gain mainly because you dont know how many calories baby is actually getting per feeding!
Ok- thanks. Should I not worry about starting tube feeding at this point?

Are you feeding that formula with the canned puppy formula, plus the other ingredients? That is where you get the calories...if your baby is bottle feeding, feed the formula from the bottle and let her finish up on mom....you will see the difference in how fast she gains weight when you get that super caloric formula in her.....as long as you are gaining weight.....never stand still or LOOSE weight.....use the formula and bottle feed the baby like every 4 hours...,,try to give 3cc per feeding, that will raise her calorie count significantly....

Yes, I switched to your recipe as soon as I got it from you. Both babies bottle fed on it for a couple of days every 3 hours while leaving them a little hungry to encourage nursing from Lola. Once mom's milk came in, they would consume less from the bottle and still gain weight, so I took that as a sign to transition them to feed mostly from Lola. I still supplement once, maybe twice a day at most, but I was letting them set the pace because they seem to have lost interest in the bottle and the weight gain has picked up.

It feels counterintuitive to force them to feed more than they want. Should I be pushing them to take more formula?

I think you are doing OK now....just watch weight....if they slow way down gaining, or stop, then you will need to restart your supplemental feedings.....even a couple of cc three or four times a day will be a dramatic increase in calories and babies will begin to gain....be sure you dont hold baby on its back to bottle feed....position baby level with head a little higher, like it is nursing from momma...make sure puppy is comfy and warm and feeding is warm.....and if you see that baby is really into a bottle feeding session, let the puppy take as much as it wants from the bottle....you have nore nutrition in that formula than momma is providing actually.....you DO want baby to nurse from momma, to stimulate nursing and milk production and bonding....but it wont hurt if you fill baby up on formula once or twice in a 24 hour period.

Thank you! I am weighing them 2-3 times per day and they are consistently gaining no less than 0.1-0.2 ounce at each weigh-in, sometimes they jump higher than that, so we're averaging roughly 0.5 ounce/day.


Today they made it to 7.0 (B) and 7.2 (G) ounces. We struggled to get them to 5 oz, but once there, their weight gain increments have been higher than before.

How much did they weigh today....this afternoon? Still gaining?

Mid day they were 7.1 and 7.3
I do my last weigh-in before bedtime, so I don't have the very latest just yet, but as compared to mid day yesterday, we're up 0.4 each from 6.7 and 6.9.
