Someone earlier in the thread mentioned that Paula's pups are square-bodied. I am one of the lucky people in the world. I have one of Paula's pups - Crissy. Crissy is 19 weeks old today and I took her into the studio in hopes that I could capture a photo of her from the side so show you what I consider square-bodied. BTW - when I was shopping for a female, I didn't use the term cobby -- I said exactly what I wanted which was SQUARE BODIED. I figured that square bodied could only mean one thing and was a descriptive term that would not be misunderstood. |
I think square bodied means as long as it is tall. If you measure from the base of the neck to the tail across the back and then from the base of the neck to the floor for the height, the two numbers should be the same. She is very very cute!!! Nice job on the photo! I know how hard that is to get! |

Getting a perfectly square dog is not as easy as it seems. Even show dogs may be off by 1/2 inch or a little more/less. The judge does not stand out there with a measuring tape but pretty much gage by looking. Crissy is beautiful. Her coat is coming in very nicely and look at her holding that tail up! VERY CUTE! |

I think then from my understanding, you can have a square bodied dog who isn't cobby because square just means as long as it is tall but cobby means short and compact. As Kathy said if judges now prefer a longer leg, then the back, to stay square and in proportion, has to be longer. I don't show and as a pet owner i like short and compact or "cobby". |

Thank you to those that commented on Crissy. She is "my" perfect girl. It is VERY rare that her little tail is down. Her proportions, tailset, earset were exactly what I was looking for!!!! |
I Agree Crissy is stunning and IF I were ever lucky enough to get another little girl - I would try to hook up with Paula too - Thanks to Kimberley - txshopper.....I love knowing she's only about an hour from me... |
There may be certain looks and types of yorkies prefered in certain parts of the country and that look will vary from judge to judge. Please remember that the judge is looking at the dogs in the show ring and comparing them to the Standard of our breed. The judges personal preferences and how they look at the Standard will make a differance. The old saying "the glass is half full or is the glass half empty. " |
