Is my baby pregnant? Hello. I have just joined this site and would like some thoughts. My girl (LP) is 3 y/o and about 9-10 lbs I have recently (in the last couple of weeks) noticed that her belly is getting bigger and her teats are getting full. She ended her heat cycle in the first week of April. I had noticed the neighbors dog hanging around a lot when she was in heat, I chased him off when ever I found him in my back yard, but I am afraid he might have gotten to my girl. While she has always been a mommas girl, she has gotten especially clingy lately, hides under the bed often (she has never done this), her nipples are poking out like crazy, and she is just different. I have an appointment next week for a blood test, but I hear these can be inconclusive. I am not sure if she is pregnant or in a false pregnancy. Is there any way to tell the difference and could a blood test tell the difference? Sorry for rambling so much lol |
Leaving these little ones outside without supervision, even if they were not in heat, is a major no-no, and to know your girl was in heat and has a male getting into your yard, well, I just don't know what to say at this point. I hope and pray that the male was not a larger dog or a mix, I pray he has no disease he could pass to your female or her unborn pups. This was in my opinion neglect in a major way. I'm sorry this happen to that poor little girl. And yes, she's either pregnant or a false pregnancy. Shame on you! |
Really? I am asking for advice, not your judgement. I understand that this was a mistake, but as I have a fenced in back yard and she is never out for more than 5-10 minutes, I assumed she would be fine. The male is a small dog (smaller than her). Accidents do happen. That is reality. I was under the assumption these forums were to help people, not to act superior and pass ridiculous judegments. |

I get that to you this is just one mistake, one accident, one lapse in judgement....but you know how many people post on here about their "oops"...way too many....it's disheartening to responsible pet owners & forum members to see so many poor quality pups being wrecklessly produced when shelters are filled with them. Is there a reason your female wasn't spayed? |
Most likely she's pregnant. You saw the male in your backyard so he was able to get to her. You should never leave a bitch in heat outside alone, no matter what type of fence you have. A male can do amazing things to get to a female, and it only take a couple minutes. You can spay her now before she gets any further along in the pregnancy. Whelping and raising a litter is not easy... |
Go have an ultra sound done...they can detect "nodules" that are developing puppies by 4-5 weeks....my vet is excellent at reading US and can spot those little "grape seeds" at 3-4 weeks.....but have an ultra sound done. I would suggest you have the pregnancy aborted immediately....stray dogs breeding unsupervised in the yard............omg............This is not passing judgement, it is giving advice. In fact, just go ahead and schedule a spay immediately and save the money on the ultra sound. |
Yes, more than likely your girl is pregnant. Start doing research on what you will need in order to provide proper prenatal care to your gal and what is needed to raise a litter of puppies. It wont be easy and hopefully after this experience you will have your gal spayed if that is what you choose to do. But unless you plan on becoming a breeder it may be what is best for your pup in the long run. As you can clearly see it only takes one time for an in tact male, a few minutes and the opportunity to get an unspayed female who is n heat pregnant. |
Sounds to me, since the male was smaller than the female, that you "wanted" them to mate, otherwise you would NOT have left your girl in heat outside unsupervised. If a really LARGE dog had gotten to her it would have KILLED her. I say it again......this is animal cruelty in a major way, and shame on you............again!!!! |

I have lived here for 8 years and have had her for 3. This is the first time this dog (or any) has ever come into my fenced yard. As I had never in 3 years had this problem, I honestly did not think it would be this time. After I noticed him around my yard, she did not go out unsupervised anymore. She has never been a pee pad user, so she has always gone outside to go to the restroom. I am not going to argue with you all. This was a mistake but that does not mean I am going to abort if there are puppies. If there are not, then she will be getting fixed next week. Either way it will be handled. Luckily the breeeders in my area, are actually offering me advice and help when/if it comes time for whelping, rather than just telling me I am a horrible human being. |

We all have to be judgmental every day of our lives, or we couldn't make decisions. We have to decide if someone is a good or bad person so that we know if we should be friends or stay away from them. We have to make a judgment to decide whether something we want to do is right or wrong. We have to make a judgment every time there is a choice to be made regarding what will give the best outcome. In general, there is nothing wrong with judging, weighing out the possibilities is what helps us decide on the best course of action. If you ask for advice, nobody can give it without first making a judgment of the situation. If the responder had ridiculed you for something that they themselves were guilty of, that would be hypocrisy and not acceptable, but in this case I don't think they held you up to a standard that they didn't also follow and expect of themselves. |
You could get an emergency spay, that would save you from the risks that this unplanned pregnancy could bring on your girl. |

The fact is that she is more than likely pregnant and your scare tactics and your opinion of what may or may not have happened are way out of line. You dont know this person and if you are not here to help this pup and the OP get prepared for a whelp and welcoming a litter of puppies into the world than maybe you should go harass someone else. You are only making things worse. Whats done is done regardless of how it happened. She said it was not intentional so who are you to say otherwise? |

GEt an US done and Xrays when appropriate at day 56 57 58 or so, but how-ever you truly don't know the mating date so that is why an ultrasound shoud be done at an appropriate time frame to determine relative age of pups. And be prepared for a C section if the pups look too large to go through her birth canal. On the other hand if you don't want this pregnancy do an emergency spay now. |

That is not the only outcome for this situation or even in my mind the preferred one. She does not need to get ready a female to whelp from an unknown sire or two or heck even three sires. She can spay this female. And in my opinion that is what she should be getting ready for. |

I agree with what she said because you really did sound a bit rude. I understand your frustration, but somethings can be said a little bit more subtle. It is true that she did wrong by leaving her female unattended while in heat (just leaving her unattended is already bad), but she was asking for opinions, not to be judged (or at least not that way). If we are going to judge everyone every time they do something wrong, they won't ask for help or opinions anymore because they will be afraid of our reactions. And we won't be able to help them and show them the right way of doing things. We won't be able to teach them, and they will continue doing things the wrong way. And not because I agree with what someone says, makes me a less nicer person. Just the way you have your opinions, I have mine. That doesn't mean I am a bad person and it doesn't mean you are one. |

You too are out of line telling me to go HARASS someone else. |

Most of us would know better to not leave our females who are in heat alone when there is a male near by. Some like the OP thought that her gal was safe behind a fenced in yard. And unless you have ever had an intact male around a female in heat no one can ever know what leaps and bounds they will go to to get to that female. I for one know very well, the OP clearly did not. Yes I agree the OP needs a reality check, but dont we all. With any hope she will have her gal spayed after this. I pray that this gal does not suffer in order for that lesson to be learned. The hard way ! |

The OP did make a mistake but she is human, maybe she did not know better. I'm not here to judge people but to try and help them and for you guys to help me when I have a question or a doubt. I thought that this forum was for that, to be helped and get help. Not to be judged. I am sorry if you felt that me liking the post was insulting but that was not my intention. |

She need information from people who care and who want to help in order to help her to make the right choice. or to help her get prepared for a whelp. Which ever she desided to do. |
I just don't understand why these threads keep coming up- there are PLENTY of them here on YT and it isn't difficult to search and read and not have to open yourself up to all this drama. WE aren't vets. WE aren't there with your dog. YOU are. Take your dog to the vet and get it over with! Along with that, we don't know for a fact if your Yorkie is purebred from pictures and we don't know how big it will be full grown. We can't guarantee your dog's final hair color either. *whew, and breathe, random rant over* |

No Taylor that is not what I am saying and I hope that is not the case here. Certain circumstances need to be handled differently if the life of the female is in jeopardy. No one but the OP really know all the details and again that is something that she need to discuss with her vet. She came here asking about a blood test. Which I have no experience with so did not reply to. |
