tiny newborn..HELP We spent 8 hours at an emergency vet this morning. My Ivy had a breech puppy that would not come out. The vet did a c-section and we have two puppies. The breech one is 3.8 oz the othe only 1.9 ozs. She will not nurse. I could tube feed but read not too because her tummy is too small. I have tried to get colstrom from mom with not much luck. So I gave her the beef liver broth in a dropper, just a tiny bit maybe 1/8 th teaspoon and then gave her some puppy formuls mixed with a little nutra cal, again not much. She seemed to take it ok. Any ideas? She is on a heating pad trying to keep her warm..I don't know if she'll make it...any help from experienced breeders? |
Bumping this for you. Have you talked to your vet about what to do?? |
There have been breeders here who have recipes for newborn formula, and a youtube video a few days ago about feeding with a sponge. Anyone have those links? I will do a search. I agree with Baby girl Rosie; Nothing is a substitute for talking to your vet. |
MY goodness that is tiny. I really wish I could help you with this but I've never had to deal with the issues of tube feeding or one of my pups not latching on. The only thing that I would suggest is tontinue what you are doing. Do your best to get her to latch on and keep her warm. Hoping one of the more experience breeder here can give you some solid advise. Good LUck ! |
Here is that feeding video. I know nothing about breeding or newborns, just remembered this post. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...borns-lfe.html Good luck! |
Tiny Puppy Feed her often with a dropper and a small amount at a time. Every hour at least until she is stronger. Also keeping trying her with her Mom. I have found that dropping a little formula on mom's nipple will also help get a puppy started. Express a little milk from Mom and at the same time open pup's mouth and try to get her to nurse. If she doesnt pick up nursing quickly you will have to continue to dropper feed until it does. Use a little of the nutrical on your finger to get some calories into her. Also make sure Mom is stimulating her to go potty if she will do it. It is better to leave her with Mom between feedings provided Mom is accepting. Just make sure she is kept warm. If there are no other problem with the puppy normallly they will latch on as they get stronger. Just make sure you keep her taking formula regardless if it is Esbilac or some other canned formula or one you make yourself. |
tried the sponge method I'm trying everything. Just tried the new sponge method without any luck. Tried tube feeding, but she won't swollow enough of the tube. So far all I can do is a little formula with the eye dropper. I'm doing this about every hour. She won't take much and that's ok. I don't want to over feed her, just tiny bits at a time. I have been tube feeding a runt from a different liter that is now 3 weeks old and weighs 5 ozs. She was being pushed out by her much bigger siblings. She also got one on one feedings with mom, with me supplementing until she could nurse long enough to get full. I just hope this girl will be ok. She makes my other runt look hudge.. Prayers for this little one please. Thank you to those who responded..will keep you posted. |
Have no advice... Just wanted to say I would keep your little one in my prayers. |

I am so sorry your tiny pup is not doing well. Please read the following article, it might be helpful: http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm Does the pup try to suckle at all either from a dropper or a teat? I have used the glucose formula suggested in the article above and I have always been amazed how the puppies responded to it. This is the glucose formula they recommend in the 10th paragraph of the article: Quote:
I pray the puppy makes it. |
Newborn puppy The good news is she made it through the night. She still won't nurse and mom seems to be kicking her to the curb, but then whines when I take her to feed her. I have tried one on one feeding but her mom and the puppy aren't hooking up. Tried tube feeding her again but she wont swollow the tube. She does pretty good with the eye dropper. I add a little nutra cal drops to the formula and she has gotten the liver broth. I have another mom with three week old pups that I was going to try and see if she would feed her but she seems to be either drying up or maybe she just fed her 5 pupies and needs a while to replenish her supply. The puppy is going potty just fine. She nether gained or lost weight since birth where as her sister went from 3.8 to 4.1 in 24 hours. She's seems to be hungry about every 30 minutes, but seems full after I feed her and won't take any more. |
Thanks for the update |
My heart goes out to you. All the best!!! |
Yorkiemom1 is right you need to tube feed this puppy. I would recommend taking her in to your vet and having them do a tubefeeding for you. If this pup has any chance of surviving you need to tube feed her. Her stomach should look like it is overfull. I have had a pup that weighed 1.5ounces at birth and without the tube feeding she would have never made it. She just celebrated her 2 year birthday last month. |
wrong icon I feel bad. I used the wrong icon on my post. I'm not angry... I'm sad. I'm 61 years old and have a hard time with some of the computer and text stuff.. |
How is the little one doing? |
tiny newborn..needs your prayers She's had no real change, mom is nursing her other baby just fine but this one won't latch on and mom ignores her. I have her with me now and don't let her out of my site.Trying my best to keep her alive. It's in Gods hands..she needs your prayers. |

You need to have this baby INSIDE your bra....she needs the warmth and stimulation of your body....you MUST tubefeed this baby, and you must use one of the formulas ....this baby can not survive on liver water.....you can save this baby but you must step up your efforts and throw it into high gear...this baby is survivable, but not on the track she is placed on now. |
Don't make yourself sick over this-- You're doing your best. Some can't be tube fed. Some babies just have multiple serious defects and you can only do your best. You're keeping her warm, turning and stimulating her, feeding her what she'll accept. That's good enough. Personally, I've never saved a weakling with tube feeding and may never try it again. When a puppy is that sick I think tubing is a big long shot and may not be worth the additional suffering. Good luck. I know the pain. |

Btw, I'm changing your icon for you. |

I must be exceptionally blessed....I have not lost a baby that was failure to thrive, and I tube feed ANY baby that is incapable of "latching on", as well as any baby the mother abandons....as I can not stand the thought that baby starved to death. If there is multiple organ failure, then the baby will die regardless, but it wont be because I did not give that precious, innocent soul the nourishment it needed. If there are obvious malformations or deformaties that are going to prevent a babys survival, then yes, I will have the baby euthanized, because I do not believe in prolonging the suffering.....but I can not with clear conscience, justify in MY mind, allowing my babies to starve to death. I have saved numerous babies that just were pushed away by littermates, or did not suckle for whatever reason, babies that would have died if I had not fed them....that are living strong happy lives today......I never assuem there is a problem that is going to claim the baby's life, I brought that baby into the world, and I believe it is my responsibility to use whatever control over the situation God gives me, to try to save that baby. If God wants that baby back, He will take it, regardless of what I do...especially something as simple as tubefeeding a starving baby. I will leave this...... |

tiny newborn I lost my tiny baby. I feel like some of you either didn't read all my post and think I didn't do everything possible to save this puppy. I did not let her starve, how could you say that? I have been with her every minute since her birth. I tried tube feeding her many times. I can't force her to swollow the tube. She did ok with a eye dropper, so that's what I used. I pottied her, kept her warm. I did keep her inside my shirt or on a heating pad to keep her warm. I checked on her every few minutes.I gave her formula, pedilite, and nutri cal drops.I held her while she was wrapped warmly in a tiny blanket.I prayed for her.I stayed in the same room with her day and night. I know I did everything possible to keep her alive, she was not starved. You have made a sad time even worse..Maybe next time read all the post before you judge. |
