tiny newborn..HELP We spent 8 hours at an emergency vet this morning. My Ivy had a breech puppy that would not come out. The vet did a c-section and we have two puppies. The breech one is 3.8 oz the othe only 1.9 ozs. She will not nurse. I could tube feed but read not too because her tummy is too small. I have tried to get colstrom from mom with not much luck. So I gave her the beef liver broth in a dropper, just a tiny bit maybe 1/8 th teaspoon and then gave her some puppy formuls mixed with a little nutra cal, again not much. She seemed to take it ok. Any ideas? She is on a heating pad trying to keep her warm..I don't know if she'll make it...any help from experienced breeders? |
Bumping this for you. Have you talked to your vet about what to do?? |
There have been breeders here who have recipes for newborn formula, and a youtube video a few days ago about feeding with a sponge. Anyone have those links? I will do a search. I agree with Baby girl Rosie; Nothing is a substitute for talking to your vet. |
MY goodness that is tiny. I really wish I could help you with this but I've never had to deal with the issues of tube feeding or one of my pups not latching on. The only thing that I would suggest is tontinue what you are doing. Do your best to get her to latch on and keep her warm. Hoping one of the more experience breeder here can give you some solid advise. Good LUck ! |
Here is that feeding video. I know nothing about breeding or newborns, just remembered this post. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...borns-lfe.html Good luck! |
Tiny Puppy Feed her often with a dropper and a small amount at a time. Every hour at least until she is stronger. Also keeping trying her with her Mom. I have found that dropping a little formula on mom's nipple will also help get a puppy started. Express a little milk from Mom and at the same time open pup's mouth and try to get her to nurse. If she doesnt pick up nursing quickly you will have to continue to dropper feed until it does. Use a little of the nutrical on your finger to get some calories into her. Also make sure Mom is stimulating her to go potty if she will do it. It is better to leave her with Mom between feedings provided Mom is accepting. Just make sure she is kept warm. If there are no other problem with the puppy normallly they will latch on as they get stronger. Just make sure you keep her taking formula regardless if it is Esbilac or some other canned formula or one you make yourself. |
tried the sponge method I'm trying everything. Just tried the new sponge method without any luck. Tried tube feeding, but she won't swollow enough of the tube. So far all I can do is a little formula with the eye dropper. I'm doing this about every hour. She won't take much and that's ok. I don't want to over feed her, just tiny bits at a time. I have been tube feeding a runt from a different liter that is now 3 weeks old and weighs 5 ozs. She was being pushed out by her much bigger siblings. She also got one on one feedings with mom, with me supplementing until she could nurse long enough to get full. I just hope this girl will be ok. She makes my other runt look hudge.. Prayers for this little one please. Thank you to those who responded..will keep you posted. |
Have no advice... Just wanted to say I would keep your little one in my prayers. |

I am so sorry your tiny pup is not doing well. Please read the following article, it might be helpful: http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm Does the pup try to suckle at all either from a dropper or a teat? I have used the glucose formula suggested in the article above and I have always been amazed how the puppies responded to it. This is the glucose formula they recommend in the 10th paragraph of the article: Quote:
I pray the puppy makes it. |
Newborn puppy The good news is she made it through the night. She still won't nurse and mom seems to be kicking her to the curb, but then whines when I take her to feed her. I have tried one on one feeding but her mom and the puppy aren't hooking up. Tried tube feeding her again but she wont swollow the tube. She does pretty good with the eye dropper. I add a little nutra cal drops to the formula and she has gotten the liver broth. I have another mom with three week old pups that I was going to try and see if she would feed her but she seems to be either drying up or maybe she just fed her 5 pupies and needs a while to replenish her supply. The puppy is going potty just fine. She nether gained or lost weight since birth where as her sister went from 3.8 to 4.1 in 24 hours. She's seems to be hungry about every 30 minutes, but seems full after I feed her and won't take any more. |
Thanks for the update |
