Adopting a retired female breeder? Hi, I hope I'm posting in the right section, if not moderators may place it where it belongs. :) I want to adopt a 5 year old female Yorkshire but I have just learned that she had babies and that she finished nourishing(hope its the right word, imfrench :animal36) her babies 2 weeks ago. Will this affect/change the comportement of a dog? Will she make a good pet companion as much as a dog that didn't breed? I really don't know what to expect from a dog like this and I want to make sure I'm not taking in a dog that I will have to rehome. |
In two weeks it will be one year since I brought my newest yorkie home. At the time She was 5.5 years old and had recently weaned her last litter of pups. While I don't know how your dog was treated I can tell you...Rosie is the most loving sweetest dog that still has the wonderful terrier personality ever. Its hard to believe I have only had her in my life for a year. She is a very very special dog and if I had to do it all over again I would DEFINITELY!!!! |
Some pointers...find out as much as you can about the breeder and how they treated the dog...research on here what makes a breeder the best and go from there! |
I have 3 Mommie dogs and I wouldn't trade them for the world! They do get weird whenever they hear puppies on the television.... |

Not only is it going to depend on how the breeder treated momma, it will also depend on her genetic personality make up....if she is from a long line of dogs with great personalities, she will probably have a wonderful personality. Just the fact that she has been a momma will not affect her personality.... |
I adopted my Brynley when she was 6 years and she had had a few litters of puppies. She is the most loving, affectionate dog I've ever had. I do believe her personality is a direct result from the great life she had before she became my lil girl. |
I adopted my Lexie at 5 after she had her 4th and last litter. She was well treated, and she is the sweetest, most loving little velcro dog I could ever wish for! After she passes, I'm going to look for another retired mama from a good breeder. They're the best! |
Also a major plus, if she was ever shown in the show ring, she's be fully trained for grooming, walking on leash, and housebroken! Can't get better than that! |

I agree with the others, it depends so much on the breeder, a good breeder uses dogs who have a good temperament and would never breed an aggressive dog, this is just not true with byb's they breed any dog they have. By the way, I like the word you choose, "nourishing" it means to provide food or nourishment, but I think you might have been looking for the word, "nursing" it's the same as suckling or in humans it's called breast feeding. Also, most good breeders will spay the female and have a tooth cleaning before they are placed. |
