Newborn Weight Im caring for 5 puppies and my 5 pound mommy who is being fed calcium to keep up with them. I am also "trying" to bottle feed, to no avail only one will fully latch and eat. Others will fight, cry, pull away, take two sips then stop completely until they are put down they'll go straight to momma which cant handle 5 pups at a time there isn't enough milk. Im weighing them after ever 4- 5 hours to see if they're keeping up and gaining some pounds. The ones I see short I latch on to mom right after by them selves. I just don't know if they're gaining a healthy amount of weight. I didn't have a scale on the day of birth but on the second day they weighed this.... Leonardo-4.3oz Marcellus-4.8oz Juliet- 4.6oz Romeo-4.6oz Caesar-4.2oz They now are a week old and weigh this. Leonardo- 6.7oz Marcellus-7.6oz Juliet-7.4oz Romeo-7.1oz Caesar- 6.4oz (He lost .2 ounces today but then gained .1 back) :( I wish I knew what they're birth weight was this will make my life so much easier but they had to be atleast in the 3.0-3.5 range (both the mom and dad are small dad is a slight larger.) The pregnancy was accidental my brother didn't know she was in heat and brought him to play cause he was always alone at his house. does these weight gain sound accurate? |
Sorry, I think that your post may have gotten lost in the shuffle a bit, so here's a BUMP for you! =) ps- I think that, like humans, the more the babies suck the more milk mom will produce so PLEASE allow the pups to try to nurse from mom so that she has a chance at making enough milk for all of the pups! =) |
It looks like they doubled their weight by one week which is right on the mark. Your girl is doing a good job of producing milk for them if this is the case. My girl, Tea', had 6 pups for her first litter and she was able to produce enough milk for all. I just made sure she ate enough calcium rich foods (including whelping pudding) to make sure she stayed healthy herself. Feeding that many pups does take a toll on their system and you have to be diligent. Debbie (Tea', Katie and Paige) |
What iswhelping pudding? |
There is a sticky in the breeding section..it's right up top when you open this section that gives you many of the recipes for whelping pudding...thank you to those posters:) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...g-recipes.html |
Your pups are gaining nicely. I wouldn't supplement them. Momma is doing just fine. Calcuim doesn't increase milk production. It's too prevent mastitis. |

Momma is starting to neglect them. They'll be crying and shell be under the bed or will go to them lick them and walk away. I don't know what to do. |
Maybe it's too hot for her in the cage cause I have a heater and heating pad I'm going crazy as soon as I walk out the room ill hear them cry in the baby monitor cause shell walk away when they're latched. |
Try turning the heater lamp off when she's with them..the heating pad should suffice while she's in there with her own body heat. Personally, I keep the house toasty warm and only use the heating pad for my pups. Since there are so many pups, and they will usually sleep all over each other, that keeps them warm enough on the heating pad. (p.s. Never have the pups directly on the heating pad, have a blanket or towel between it and them... and I would never keep it on high at all). |
