yorkiw pregnancy advice hi everyone new to this site just looking for advice tips from anyone who has had a pregnant yorkie, my mini yorkie is pregnant her 1st timer pregnancy she is around 5 weeks but during the last week she has gone really big am a bit worried about her as obviously not sure how many puppies are in there shes a lot more tired and out of breath any advice appreciated thankyou:) |
Welcome to YT. A visit to the Vet sounds like the thing to do. My Vet followed my dog's preg. and did an ultra sound to see how many pups we were expecting. She (my Vet was also on notice when the time got close. It is a good idea to have the Vet check the pelvic space, suggest diet supplements etc. We have many posts about breeding and birthing pups. Please check out our Breeders Section. Best Wishes, Teresa |
I am sorry....I am not familiar with how large a "mini Yorkie" is....do you have any experience with whelping at all? Gestation is usually 63-65 days, give or take a couple of days....your girl is 5 weeks...that is around 35 days? She is already short of breath and very large??? I would strongly suggest a vet visit...this girl, depending on how small she is to be in this predicament, may very well be in trouble and you may be looking at a c-section.....ultra sound or xray would be advised to determine the number of babies, as well as size and position in there. What was she bred to? Are you absolutely sure of the date she was bred? I will pray for you and your momma....I hope she is large enough to even carry a litter of babies...I am concerned with the shortness of breath at this early stage. When you had her health tested prior to breeding her, she did not have any abnormal lab values that would indicate any heart issues or liver issues or kidney issues, I trust. How old is she? |

There is no such thing as a mini yorkie but by you saying that I am very worried for you dog and if she is under 5 pounds her life is very much at risk and you need to make sure you have over $1,000 for a csection and ask your vet when is best to do that. |
I think yes a visit to the vet for an xray may be in order. Im not sure what questions you have specifically but here is a site that may be helpful: Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies. I hope that you are fully prepared for anything and everything that could go wrong. Its always best to be prepared than to be caught off guard and not know what to do. Be sure that you have your vet and the emergency after hours vet on speed dial. |
All fine x Well i live in the uk and she is classed as a mini yorkie although she is 5lb, bella has been to see the vet today and all is fine she has no concerns i think it was just me being over worried about my baby, i have read up tons on yorkie pregnancy and watched lots of videos so am aware of what to expect and my vet is on standby incase of any emergency thanks for all your help :) |

I was really concerned about the shortness of breatyh....glad everything is fine! Keep us updated on the babies! |
I am glad you took her to the vet for a check up. It will relieve your mind and the vet will be able to follow her through her whelping. Good luck on the coming babies. We will be excited to see them when they are born. Hugs, Bobbi |
My yorkie was 6 weeks last week and she was quite big...took her to the Vet had blood work and xrays due to her extremely large size - INFECTION - I was given amoxicillin which can kill the puppies (if there are puppies) I believe I waited too long to breed my 5lb baby. I did it for bloodline - I want her daughter I have never had such a wonderful relationship with a dog and I wanted to extend the joy - However Yorkies act like babies their whole life. I never factored her age - she is 6 years old and that is 44 by size and I regret my ignorance. The Vet was more concerned with her mate who was 5lbs or slightly less and I have taken her to the VET every 2 weeks and Friday we will Xray for the babies - I pray my baby will be okay!!! but if your baby is less than 5lbs- The expert breeders will make you sign a commitment NOT to breed due to the danger of their size...I paid 2800 plus plane fare for my girl and she was intended to be less than 5lbs - The Vet verified 2 years ago that she was safe to breed I just should have made this decisions 2 years ago so NOW I am a nervous wreck!!! |
