Newborn Puppy not picking up weight. HELP??? This is my first time breeding, and I really need some help ASAP My Tishia has had her babies on the 14th (6 days ago). Although it was a normal birth the first and biggest puppy came out feet first and not head first and got a little bit stuck but she managed to push him out with my help. Second came out, the little girl, then third and fourth very normal. Everything went well until a couple of days ago when I realized my bitch coughing when drinking water and not wanting to eat ANY solid food. I took her to the vet and he diagnosed tongselitis. I live in the middle East with limited options for food, so I put my bitch on soft food: Royal Canine Starter Mouse and Royal Canine Revive. as this seems to be te only thing she wants to eat So far all the boys are doing good and picking up weight very normally. Except the girl. She has only picked up like 3 grams where the rest has almost doubled their body weight already. The mom seems to be producing less milk (I think due to dehydration so I decided to "force feed" electrolite water into her) PLEASE advise on what to do with number one the mom??? how can I help her? AND number two, shall I take the female away from her and suplement her OR leave her with her mom and supplement her then? Please advice as soon as possible? |
I'm not a breeder, just wanted to wish you luck...The breeders here will be along soon to give you good information... |
I don't know enough to help you, but am replying to bump up your questions so that hopefully an experience breeder will see it. |
I would leave her with mom and start supplimenting the puppy. Mom will diaper the baby and also you want the baby to hopefully latch on. I've had tinies I needed to suppliment but to be honest they didn't want it so I would get up every 2 hours and place the tiny on mom and sit there and re attach them when they bounced off. I would do this until they were gaining and strong enough to not need my assistance. Do you have goats milk available to you? Your mom needs to eat and it sounds like you have the right food for her. The RC Starter is good for mom. Give her goats milk as well as she needs calcium. Are you giving her a calcium suppliment? I have had to hand feed my new mom. Sometimes they will eat better when hand fed. You can also try boiled chicken breast, scrambled eggs with cheese on top, the goats milk...and any canned dog food she will eat. Good luck. Keep in contact with your vet as well. |
Talida, I am going to give you a formula that I use to "resusitate" newborns....this formula has approximately 16 calories/cc.....it will jerk that little girl back from the jaws of death if you can get 1cc/ounce of her body weight into her, every 2 hours, around the clock! Momma will benefit from drinking this formula also....she needs liquids as well as food! Is the baby nursing??? Will she drinK from a baby bottle or an eye dropper or even a syringe???? The formula: 8 oz Just Born Puppy Milk with Colostrum (if you can not get this, use goats milk) 4 oz Pedialyte (if you cant get this, use distilled water) 1 raw egg yolk, 1 cup Whole Live Culture Yogurt (plain yogurt if you cant get it with live cultures) 3 tablspoons of Karo Syrup, you need some kind of liquid infant vitamins like Vy-Daylin, if you can get your hands on that.....mix all this together and refrigerate...will last a week. You need to give that little girl 1cc/oz of her body weight, every 2 hours around the clock. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THAT BABY IS SUCKING AT ALL.....if she is, you supplement her and then put her back with momma and let momma clean and toilet her...the other babies will keep her producing milk as long as they are nursing. Momma can drink some of this formula also, it will be good for her...she need hi calcuim supplement to her diet...canned salmon has more "punch per pound" than any other fish you will be able to get your hands on over there....broccoli is LOADED with calcium....steam it until soft if she wont eat it raw from your hand....mix it with your Royal Canin for her.....yogurt is great for her.....cottage cheese too........ LET ME KNOW HOW YOU ARE DOING...WHERE YOU STAND IN THIS SITUATION.... |
Alright Middle EAst. Karo syrup and I am in North America never heard of it till Yorkie Talk. Maple Syrup another alternative. Honey in a pinch. Molasses. Yorkie Mom1 Please help. Worried about the honey. cultured uncultured? What does the Middle East use for sweetner that is not sugar? Camel's milk more available there? scrambled egg great for the MOM. You can if you have Goats Milk use that to mix with the egg and gently cook. I agree supplement baby, but put back to Mom to diaper and nurse. Also Mom should be able to take warm honey n milk for what I think is tonselitis; ie inflamed tonsils. Then if this works, make following mixture; 1 tablespoon honey, 2 tablespoons distilled water, 2 tablespoons goat milk (or other milk). Heat to luke warm just so honey is disolved. |
We used to be able to buy cans of sweetened condensed milk...if you can get only that, put a tablespoonful of that in the formula....they have goats running every where...should be able to get goats milk with no problem....this was nothing but an isolated desert when we were in Kuwait in 1955....HOPEFULLY, things are more civilized in the area now....(we had raw honey available back then...) |
I always make sure mine are gaining. I agree that I would leave with mom but supplement. also, if she can have a little alone time with mom in between just to nurse on her own can also help. I use almost the same formula as Yorkiemom1 does and if you need to supplement, that's what I would use. |
All of the above are good suggestions.. make sure "tiny" is warm when/if you supplement feed. Give her as much "mom" time as possible, if needed, hold off bigger brothers for a bit so tiny girl gets alone time.. have big brothers start the process however because she maybe to weak to get the things flowing.. have one of her larger brothers start sucking on a nipple, then, once the milk starts to flow.. pull him off and put her on.. once she has her fill.. there will be enough left for them once mommy gets eating well again and the milk comes in. Mom is always best.. I would feed every two hours at this age. Giving mom the extra calcium as suggested by the others in the goats milk, the cottage cheese, eggs etc.. she should be doing much better very soon. -Diana :animal-pa |
My poor little baby, Good Morning all yorkie Talk friends, especially all of you that posted to my reply, it is so greatly appreciated. First of all the mom seems to be busy drying and I am rushing her to my vet this morning. What is strange is all the other puppies still seems to be very happy and not crying at all? They do seem like they are jumping around from one teet to another. I have been trying to take mom and baby girl alone every two hours. I seem to use a bigger brother just to get the teet running and then putting her on it. She drinks very slow but I try for her to get as much as possible from moms milk, and I see she has absolutely no energy at all I fill up with the replacer. Dear Yorkiemom1: I have access to almost most of the ingredients that you have mentioned and sending someone to go get all on the moment. Luckilly Goats milk is very commen here, if wished I can even go ask someone to go milk a goat for me right next doors. The little girl was sucking very well up to yesterday, and today I feel she doesnt have the power. I am up every 1.3hours to try and feed her. She seems to get on well with a small nursing bottle. I weighed her this morning and thankfully she has not LOST ANY weight but neither has she picked up. As far as it goes to the mom, I am trying to force her to drink RC electrolite water, as she does not drink water on her own and seems to cough alot when she does (I think soar throat). I am handfeeding her as she does not want to see a plate close to her. I am also giving her goats milk with an egg yellow in about 100ml a day). The vet gave me a multi vitamin and she is also getting that allong with her anti-biotics. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I seem to be losing hope today :( |

First of all many thanks for your kind reply. I have gone out to buy the ingredients for the suplement. Or atleast what I could find running from shop-to-shop and pharmacy-to-pharmacy like a crazy lady indeed so I can make my 1.3hour deadline to feed little Tamishia. I hope it will work, but maybe someone can give me advise incase I should rather find another suplement for a specific ingredient. 1. New born Puppy milk -> replaced with organic goat milk 2. Pedialyte or Distilled water -> Replaced with Royal Canin Rehydration Support (Electrolyte instant) 14grams mixed with 300 ml cooked water (as I can find neither Distilled or Pedialyte) 3. 1 raw egg yolk 4. 1 cup whole Live Culture Yogurt -> Replaced with Organic Greek Yogurt Natural Flavour 5. Karo Syrup -> could only get Light Karo which contains real Vanilla 6. Liquid Infant Vitamins (Vy-Dayline) -> Replaced with local Infant Vitamins Liquid. Now I have a question, how much of the Liquid Vitamins should be added? Also I have gotten hold of a certified canned Salmon, but it is Red Salmon. Is that okay? and if it is how much? |
Hang in there Talida....as far as antibiotics go, you dont want that momma to get anything but Amoxicillin...that is safe for the babies....they will be getting the antibiotics thru the mommas milk....if you need for some reason to get aggressinve treatment with the momma in order to save her life, you are going to have to pull those babies off and feed them all....they will all do well on that formula.....get as much of the original ingredients, not the substitutes, as you can....Just Born, Pedialyte, egg yolk, Karo Syrup, plain Yogurt, the liquid infant vitamins....the larger babies that are doing well, will only need feeding every 4 hours around the clock...that tiny little girl that is struggling every 2 hours around the clock until you can get her turned around and gaining weight....if they will take the formula from a pet baby bottle, what luck! Just be sure you are getting 1cc/oz of the baby's weight, into them...that little girl needs at least 3 cc/2 hours....just put that much in the bottle so you are sure they each get the minimal correct amount....dont gibve up hope Talida....just get into high gear and get going!!! Just to be on the safe side, get the vet to give you 3-4 tuberculin syringes without the needle...it is a skinny syringe that holds 1cc....you may need that little syringe to feed that tiny one if it stops nursing....also get 3-4 3cc syringes...that nipple off that baby bottle will fit right over the end of that syringe....you may need to pull tat plunger out of that 3cc syringe and put that nipple over the end of that syringe....sometimes the babies seem to be able to suck the milk out of that syringe with the nipple attached to it, easier than sucking the milk out of a baby bottle....I have to go to work but will be checking back on you frequently all day....you dont loose hope Talida...those babies and that momma are depending on YOU....you just move quickly and delibertly, and do what you can do....you can do this.....keep the babies warm, no drafts...feed warm formula.....keep babies on the momma if at all possible, at least let her do "her thing" along with you supplementing them....they need her touch and care.... |

Thanks for your reply, Yes as for tonselitis i.e inflammed tonsils and painful throat.(sorry for my spelling). I will try your remedy and see if it can help her (o dear I hope so!) Will keep you all updated. |
:thumbup::thumbup: Excellent Talida with all your substitutions!!! GREAT!! You will need to add 5cc of the infant vitamins to the mixture and mix it all well....you should do very well with the substitutions you have made....hang in there...this is looking good Talida!!!! Give momma about 1/2 cup of the salmon, bones and all, per day....have your vet check her calcium level so we know wherew we are with that! Quote:

But as I did say earlier I dont think he has too much experience with these small dogs, and the vet that I trusted sadly left this country a couple of days ago. There is only today and tomorrow left for the anti-biotiks, although I do not feel that it has really made any big difference with her tonsils. Any advice? should I get them off nursing? |
Talida, I have sent you my email address via your private message...please email me using my email so I can reach out to you while I am at work....MAKE SURE THAT LITE KARO DOES NOT HAVE ARTIFICIAL SWEETNER IN IT...I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE VANILLA ADDED THAT HAS ALCOHOL IN IT....CAN YOU GET THE SWEETENED CONDENCED MILK...IT IS IN A CAN...PET MILK MAKES IT, SO DOES CARNATION....IT IS BY THE EVAPORATED MILK...THICK YELLOW, VERY SWEET....YOU NEED THE SUGARS IN IT FOR THE BABY SO HER BLOOD SUGAR DOES NOT DROP....CHECK YOUR "PM"S FOR MY EMAIL...IT WILL BE QUICKER TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU.... |
Oh my goodness! I have no advice, just wanted to wish you and your new Mommy and babies well:love: You are doing a great job, and Yorkiemom1 is wonderful!!!! |

My little baby girl Tamishia is doing much better since she has been on Yorkiemom1's formula. She has even picked up 2grams :) But please continue sending thoughts and prayers this way as she still needs to get a lot stronger in order to have a healthy happy life. |
Wow, you are an incredible person, I can't find the words to tell you how proud I am of you. I think of the circumstances in your country and I know how difficult it is to do what your trying to do...and yet you are doing it. So many people here don't realize how lucky we are to have immediate access to anything for our pups...and still.... I admire you, truly admire you! I hope all works out well for your pups...its a wait and see, but don't doubt yourself at all, you are doing more than most people, you are doing everything you can... Please keep us posted, this is truly an incredible story. We are here for you. |
Little preemy Baby Girl I just wanted to update you all on the progress of little Tamishia Thanks to the help and advice from Yorkiemom1 Tamishia is doing just a little bit better tonight. She was very dehydrated this morning and it called for an emergancy appointment to the vet for SubQ injections. Poor little Tiny princess cried so much my heart pained and my eyes filed up with tears. Tonight she seems to be a little beter and a little bit more hydrated but she still has some way to go. Her mommy is also doing much better now, although I feel the other pups are alittle too big for her and her milk supply for them is pretty limited. I am also supplementing them now. Little Tamishia is taking up so much time. As she needs to be hydrated every hour and needs to be fed every 1.5-2 hours around the clock I will do what ever is needed to save this little tiny princesses life. I will advice every body that wants to breed their dogs to be sure of it first. YES YES one does read this EVERYWHERE, but I was one of those people that spend hours on the internet, reading watching videos, following up, studiyng, etc etc. I though I was ready and could handle it. Did I handle the delivery, O yes! but did I expect what has happened this week? NOPE! Atleast if you ultimitely decide to breed make sure that you have someone experienced within reach of you to help out. If it wasnt for yorkiemom1 I do not have a clue where will little Tamishia have been, also where her mommy wouldve been and where I ultimately wouldve been. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Yorkiemom 1 xx:rose::rose::rose::rose: |
Glad to hear the little girl is still hanging in there! |
I have to add a little something here...this lady is getting EVERYTHING I tell her she needs....she even got the Ringers to start sub-q hydration for the baby....EVEN THE VET DID NOT HAVE RINGERS, AND TOLD HER SHE COULDNT GET IT....WELL, GUESS WHAT!!!! UNBELIEVEABLE!! She is with that baby, either feeding or hydrating her, not taking her eyes off the pup, every hour around the clock, something is being done for the baby....additionally, she is now supplementing the big boys as they were dragging momma down....not producing enough for those boys!! With them getting extra supplemented feedings, they are staying full better and are not draining momma. Talida has not complained even once, and has jumped up and rushed to the vet at any time of the day or night, anytime I told her it looks like a professional eye needs to look at the baby and give professional help, she runs! She was terrified of the hydrating, she went to the vet for the vet to show her in person how to do it....she has friends that are galavanting all over the country, keeping in contact with her, getting anything she needs for that baby!!! Talida has truly gone to all ends of the earth in order to get whatever she needs for her baby. If God takes that little angel, it certainly wont be because of anything Talida did or did not do! I have seen breeders that quit trying, with many fewer obsticles than Talida is encountering, in a sparcely inhabited, practically 3rd world country, that has an entirely different attitude towards animals than we do! Y'all pray for her...she is doing soooooooo good, but she needs prayers for strength to keep this up........ |
Nice job Talida, I have and will continue to pray for your pups and your momma dog. Yorkiemom1 way to go above and beyond, thank you for helping Talida try and save her pup. |
Yorkiemom1 you are truly the best!!! Thank you so much for helping Talida save that baby...you are heaven sent!! God bless you!! Talida you hang in there...you have gone above and beyond to save your baby....I speak for many when I say WE are sooo very proud of you. You came to the right place for help...i will keep you and your babies in my prayers. This story had me in tears (HUGGZ) Stay strong and dont give up, your're doing great. |
Prayers going out for the baby and Mom and you as well Talida. |
Talida let me say, that you are doing an amazing job! Not only did you reach out, you took the advice offered. And then which is NOT common you actually thanked that person publicly for their efforts! You are one Classy Lady in my books. I know that if we were close to you physically we would help out in every way we could. Alas we only have this board to reachout to you, and Say, what a great job you are doing. I truly commend you for your dedication, perserverance and effort on behalf of your Mom and the pups! YorkieMom1 is also amazing in her generosity of spirt and sharing her knowledge and time with a "stranger". Which at this point you aren't a stranger to all of us here who are reading your threads. Once the pups are grown and past the "dicey" stage, you will have time to think of the next few steps along the way of breeding. So happy that things are working out well at this moment |
Great thread, this is an example of Yorkietalk at its best! Good job everyone, and Yorkiemom, you impress me more every day! |
Thank you all, but I am just able to share stuff I know with someone who did everything right, and got dealt a less than perfect hand. This is for me, a case of "see one, do one, teach one".....we just tube fed her baby, via email, step by step....she watched videos on how to do it, I answered any questions and addressed here fear, and she finally felt confident enough to do it....she did it with great success, the baby tolerated it fine, and she dissolved into tears of happiness! So we have jumped another hurdle and she is able to do one more thing to help her baby survive. We are not out of the woods with this pup...she isnt gaining weight like she should be....hopefully, with more precise tube feedings, she will start t gain weight....but that is my biggest concern for her right now.... |
Talida I must commend you for your dedication...my thoughts and prayers are with you and your pups... |
Was thinking about you and your babies and hoping they are doing well, especially little Tamishia:love: |
