Starting Puppy Watch Well, its midnight. Pheobe has been showing signs of what i think to be first stage labor for the past couple of hours. Tossing and turning and sleeping for just minutes in between. Her tummy keeps having what I think is mild contractions.. by that I dont mean the onset of pushing. Its like for short intervals her stomach is very tensed up and you can easily see what seems to be each pup. An example would be.. umm.. like a balloon with rocks in it and all the air sucked out. She seems to get really restless when it happens and then it goes back to normal and thats when she falls back asleep. Is this just the pups moving into place??? I've never seen this.. but i believe im calling into work tomorrow!!! MY FINGERS ARE CROSSED after tomorrow the vet says its a risk to not be seen. ( for reference her first tie date was Feb. 25th last tie date was the 27th of Feb.) Getting EXTREMELY ANXIOUS |
Forgot to add... Her temp is 97.7 |
Hoping for a good delivery.:animal-pa |
We've got contractions! hard labor has started!! first pup on the way |
Good luck!!!!! |
first pup:male 5.4 oz second pup:male 4.3 oz 2 left!!! |
Just seeing this. How exciting is she doing okay? So glad you are home with her :) |
Yes, i was actually packing up after a call to the vet. she was pushing not stop for almost an hour..i wasnt gunna chance it, it really was seeming like it was stuck.. then i hear from my boyfriend " ITS OUT THE PUPS OUT". Shes cleaning those two up, theyre both nursing and im just waiting on the last two |
i think they were both trying to be pushed out simultaneously and that was causing problems. luckily they shifted. they were only about 5 mins apart, if that |
Wow that's fast. It seemed when Lexi had pups they came 35 min to 50 min a part. Hoping the next two come easier for her |
wow, yes, sometimes, both pups move down the horns simultaneously and that can cause a problem, glad pups are out , if you made the whelping drink you can offer her some, my girl always drank a bit of it in between pups while waiting for the next one. best of luck to you and her with the remaining babies.. hugs, |
contractions are back in motion... third pup is on the way. ive been offering her water, but shes all about the pups right now, she wont even look at me, ill keep offering her but im just glad to see her mother instincts taking over. |
how long should i wait to mark each pup? i plan to use a small amount of nail polish. right now i can tell the two males apart..if the females are both easy to tell apart i will skip it all together until it becomes necessary..if it does |
I mark my pups as soon as they are born, that way I know which was born when, I cut the cords not mama,I use the aspirator to clear their nose and mouth, when they are crying and wigglying I give them back to mama and get ready for the next one. when all of them are born, I take them in birth order and give them a dose of NurseMate ASAP to prevent any fainting puppy syndrome, and after that, I just keep an eye on mama , make sure all the placentas are out, I only let her eat one or two, to prevent diarreah. hugs, |
I have been doing the cords, and finishing up the drying and aspirating. first two were gasping but third pup just came out and is not, still aspirated the pup but looks healthy and fine :) another BOY!!! 5.4 oz as well! yep..time to mark!! |
I tried the finger nail polish once. And I had a pup react to it. It was fine but never again. I bought little collars. But was afraid to use them. I could go by weight for along while. And it was nail polish I for from a groomer that was safe for dogs. Lexi always ate a little food I got from the vet between pups and drank a little warm milk. |
I use thin strips of fleece they work perfect for me. I have never used nail polish, so I don't know enogh to comment on that. hugs, |
I was told by another breeder that was how she did it. So thought nothing of it. Scared me so bad. I bought the fleece collars also. |
I tried a few things, like yarn and the paper collars, but mama always manage to remove some, then I found the fleece ones and they worked so well, that is all I use now and all I recomend. hugs, |
A GIRL!! 4.5 oz :) all four pups doing well! |

i could probably make some out of all the fleece blankets ive cut from scrap sales. i have a ton for bedding with the litter, so i wouldnt ever run out. anyone have examples of how it is done? i was worried abotu things on the neck if pheobe tried to get them off and strangled a pup.. idk. |

here you go I cut them thin and longer that I need once I tie them to the pup I cut the excess, fleece streches so if she licks the fleece will stretch. i always make sure that I can fit my finger between the fleece marker and the pup, that is the right spacing. and I do change them as soon as I can't fit my finger comfortably in between. here' a picture of my last litter wearing them. http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p...3/IMG_0322.jpg |
yes, all foyur placentas are out! She ate THREE THOUGH :( it was the first two as i wasnt really worried about it and both pups so quick was overwhelming. then the last one. but yes, four out. times to rest... ugh long morning |
She is still experiencing contractions. I listened for another pup but having no luck finding a heartbeat. she feels pretty empty, although i do feel one thing dead center if i lay her on her back.. honestly it COULD be a pup..or an underdeveloped one..something of that sort?? maybe im just feeling an organ?? its such a sudden change in her body i just dont know.. but why the contractions? not really frequent but definite contractions |
give her vanilla ice cream it can be another pup that was way up in the horn, she needs a boost of calcium right now..do you have red rabsberry leaf tea? or someone that can run to the store and buy it, it is great to clean your girl and help in situations like this. |
The uterus is usually hard and sometimes feels like another puppy. I have been mistaken with that before. I usually start massaging and see if I can get it to move and if not, it probably is the uterus. I have taken them in before to make sure though. |
yes I agree, if you are not sure and she keeps contracting, you better take her in for an Oxytocin shot. hugs, |
