whelping

Hi my female is on her 63 day pregnancy . I have been to vet everything looks okay he did a x-ray and a ultrasound on day 56 to see how many pups size and etc. She is having 4 . This is her first litter and we are doing it for family thats it not selling. Okay my question is she is day 63 and her temps today were around 97.8 . She is very active still and is eating some not a lot . I haven't noticed any signs of contraction she is really restless moving from room to room and playing with her toys . She is also sleeping a lot too. She doesnt want to leave my side . She has been nesting a lot on my bed also I have done alot of research and everything and my vet has been with helping us if I have any questions. But I'm wondering if she is going to have them soon ?? If nothing happens by day 56 I plan on calling my vet again to to insure everything is okay. Thanks any adivce would be wonderful !

Correction I meant day 65***

KYJ 12 03-20-2012 07:54 PM

Sounds like she's close. You might be in for a long night. Keep taking her temp and see if it stays down. My girl ate up to the time she whelped. Each dog is different but most don't eat 24 hours before. Good luck with the whelp!

Forgot to add, my girl also was very active before she went into labor. But she nested right before she whelped. Keep a close eye on her

MikaTallulah 03-20-2012 07:56 PM

Cozy went quick with her 2 litters once labor started. Her temp was down for a few days and then went back to normal during labor. Odd I know but that was just her. She never really nested. She has always been my shadow. She started to do doggie squats and begged to go out to go potty a lot about 15-30 min before the first puppy was born with her first litter. Her second litter she had the first puppy breech and showed no signs of labor. She had just eaten about 10 minutes before she gave birth. The first litter was in a cat bed and the second litter was in the kitchen on the floor. She chose her own place. After the pups where born she let me keep them in a basket but the basket had to go where I went otherwise she would try to follow me without the puppies.

My point being every dog is different and so will every whelping.

I would not leave her unattended though til after she has the puppies for the safety of her and the babies.

Thanks you guys making me feel a little at ease I'm not as worried she is in her kennel right next to my bed and their is a nightlight so I can peak in on here every little bit. I have a blanket covering it making it more like a den and have her kennel sit up as her whelping box. I'm afraid to let her wonder during the night because our male is lose and I don't want anything to happen if she was to gi e birth in a different room with me not around.I have not left the house in the last 3 days just incase she had the pups. I made sure we had all necessities so I wouldn't have to leave her side. Thanks u guys made me feel better

KYJ 12 03-20-2012 08:16 PM

Glad your feeling better! I would def keep the female and male separated from here on out. My girl whelped april 8th and my male still hasn't seen her and won't for a while. I put her upstairs in a nice quiet room and him downstairs that way she has her privacy. But I was sleeping by her side for 2 weeks when she was getting close. You'll do fine. The worst part is waiting. Just like I said keep a good eye on her. Keep us updated!

Bigler_family 03-20-2012 08:22 PM

I usually let them be together during the day and when I'm around . When I'm not in sight he is usually with me or in his cage. I am going to have to put him in downstairs until after she has pups and they go to their new family just to make sure he dont hurt them or momma hurts him. I wasnt quite sure on that, Thanks for Advice !! Yes I will keep u all updated.

Inquiring minds want to know :D good luck with your new babies

Bigler_family 03-21-2012 05:27 AM

NO PUPPIES YET :( I checked her throughout the night and she slept all night. I didn't hear no whining or yelping at all during the night This morning when we got up she was acting like she has been last couple of days . She grabs her toy and ran for my bed. She isn't really digging with her paws this morning but more rubbing with her back on everywhere like she itches. I took her temp and it was 96.7 could that be right ??? She hasn't ate this morning , I am keeping a very very close eye on her today !!! Could she have pups during the day ?? Thanks everyone for your concern . .

Micah my love 03-21-2012 05:38 AM

My puppies were always born during the early morning hours or before 12:am except for a couple of times...they can come at anytime, like you i never left the house and slept close to my little moms when they were in waiting :)

I believe they are more calm knowing you are there with them...I hope she has an easy whelp

carmen in nj 03-21-2012 05:40 AM

is she a maiden Bitch? I had a maiden that went to day 67, my girls usually whelp 24 hrs after temperature drop, then it spikes again and finally it drops for good and whelping occurs, she sounds close, just keep an eye on her, the last few days can feel like months, I know..LOL, and YES, she can whelp during the day, my last litter was born starting at noon, not all dogs whelp at night..
best of luck..
hugs,

Did she have her puppies yet? Inquiry minds want to know.

horsnaround 03-21-2012 06:05 AM

Sounds like you are getting close. And you are doing things right by keeping in contact with your vet. She will start looking for a place you will be able to tell if she is by your side. The first time Lexi had pups she moved all over the house. But loved my bed. So we made that possible. But when it really was time she had them in the place I made for her in the living room. Drove me crazy I was new to this and so was she. But everything went wonderfully. Good luck and keep us updated. Can not wait to see pictures

horsnaround 03-21-2012 06:07 AM

Oh and Lexi whelped first litter started at 6 pm second litter 10:30pm and third litter 10:30 am. So she covered the whole clock. Good luck

Bigler_family 03-21-2012 06:11 AM

Thanks, I'm not sure what a maiden bitch is ??? Ya all she has done this morning is lay on my bed and now she has started running around my kitchen trying to poop everywhere. It's dierraha and just little spots.

carmen in nj 03-21-2012 06:17 AM

a maiden bitch is a girl that is having puppies for the first time, sorry, sometimes I get carried away, LOL usually they don't know exactly what to do , if you are an inexperience breeder you can miss the not so expected hints of whelping, specially it sounds like you are both maiden, LOL do you have a mentor you can call?
I just read your last post she can be trying to empty her bowels, keep her close and don't let her go outside, I have heard of new mamas having puppies in the yard because they know they have to push but they think is poop and is really a puppy...

Bigler_family 03-21-2012 06:27 AM

Oh okay yes we are both new to this and no mentor . We just wanted one litter for family we are not starting a business or anything. after this we are getting her fixed. Oh yes don't have to worry about that she is inside dog. She is laying next to me on my bed all sprawled out and wanting me to rub her belly. I think she is trying to get pups in right postion.

carmen in nj 03-21-2012 06:35 AM

ok, just take a deep breath and relax, now all you have to do is the hardest part, WAIT, LOL, even after mentoring, helping friends and my own, i still get antsy when I have a pregnant girl, and Waiting those last few days is torture, she will go when she is ready, they love silence and a cave like effect, I make sure my girls know where I want them to whelp, we start sleeping in the puppy room next to the whelping box on day 59. make sure you have everything you need ready and handy, specially the oral cal plus, you don't want her calcium level going down after whelping specially with 4. NO calcium before whelping, but she needs Loads of it after, ingredients for whelping pudding, and drink and all the other necesities.
best of luck, wishing your girl a fast and safe whelping..
hugs,

Bigler_family 03-21-2012 06:43 AM

Thanks Yup I have all that stuff ready and I made up her kennel she had been in their off and on the last 2 weeks during the day and everything. Thanks Yup we just laying around watching and waiting .

horsnaround 03-21-2012 06:45 AM

one of the best things someone let me know was to cut the umbilical cord and not let the dog chew it off. They can chew it to close and can cause problems. So I always clipped them and made sure Lexi left them alone. And I always let her eat one after birth. She always threw it up but vet said one and take the rest away.. But everyone does that different worked well for me... Also she will need food in front of her once pups are here.. I also had special food I got from the vet to give her while whelping just a little. She needed it between pups. She had large litters. 7 all three times I think you are getting close. :)

Bigler_family 03-21-2012 07:50 AM

I'm hoping we are getting close I'm exicted . Hope everything goes smoothly. She hasn't got off bed and staying right next to her daddy .

Yorkiemom1 03-21-2012 02:58 PM

I let my mommas eat one placenta, the rest I clean up and discard, cut the umbilical cord, suction out the mouth, then let momma lick and clean the baby...that bonds the momma and the baby, and stimulates moms milk to drop and contractions to start for pup #2....

How is she doing ??

KYJ 12 03-21-2012 05:03 PM

Checking to see if there's a puppy update. My girl whelped at noon. First pup was born at 120pm in the afternoon. Sometimes in busy households they wait until late at night bc it's quite. Hope all is well! Will keep checking for an update!

Bigler_family 03-21-2012 06:19 PM

Sorry havent updated sooner. No puppies yet !!! She is still resting on my bed and if she gets down and somebody walks by bedroom door she goes right back for bed. She has been leaking some fluid . Not green though . No yelping whining or anything !!!! I'll check back later and update if anything new happens

carmen in nj 03-21-2012 06:22 PM

good she is getting closer, did she loose her mucus plug?

horsnaround 03-21-2012 06:24 PM

My girl never made any sounds. I think you are getting very close. Did she eat today?
