8 oz and 11 weeks old. Going downhill!! HELP If there is anyone ot there that can answer this right away, I would really appreciate it. My little one is 8 ounces and 11 weeks old I have been feeding him Nutra-Cal and chicken and whatever else he wants. Last night, he started going down hill. Now he is not even taking the Nutra-Cal. I am having to force feed him water!! Does anyone have any ideas? |
Praying for you! Have you called your vet? |
Off to the vet for you, good luck and please keep us posted on what your vet says. |
yes. I called the vet. He's been to the vet 3 times for this. It comes and goes, but this ones the worst. I put this in the "sick puppy" forum too. Maybe with it being in both forms we can get him thru it!! |
buy beef liver and boil it in about 6 onz of water, take that broth and mix it with soft good quality puppy food and a bit of goat's milk, put a bit on your finger and put it in his mouth, do this every two hours, that is what I do for my puppies.is very important to get some food on him, you can also add half a teaspoon of vanilla yogurt to the mix for a bit of sweet flavor, I have save a few puppies with this.. so please give it a try.. hope he gets better soon.. |
Get that baby to the vet for sub-q fluids w/glucose. Have the vet show you how and bring some home. When a tiny gets weak, organ failure can come on quickly. You can't feed him enough water to see him through this. |
He's been to the vet already. I am giving him Ringers twice a day 5 cc's a day. And he's getting fluid by syringe about every 2 hours. |

Chachi, I doubt that a vet could do IV on such a small one. The veins are too tiny. The fluids I'm mentioning would be most likely given sub-q. |

If you have been giving him a lot of Nutri-cal then his pancreas might be exhausted. Please read the following article: http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm From the above article: ....make a 5% glucose solution by mixing one teaspoon white corn syrup with a few grains each of sodium chloride (table salt) and potassium chloride (salt substitute) with four tablespoons boiled water. This resembles a Ringer’s glucose-sale fluid but, of course, cannot be used for subcutaneous or intravenous injection because it is not sterile. We put the solution into a dropper bottle. I realize your little one is an older puppy but this solution might help him. The first thing is to get him stable. If you keep giving him different types of food then you might be doing more harm than good. It could be upsetting his tummy. I recommend you get a good quality dry puppy food and grind it up. You can make a mush using 1/2 goats milk mixed with 1/2 water. Or in place to the goat milk you can use some canned Pedigree Puppy food mixed with the ground up dry food. I will be praying your baby recovers and starts to thrive. |

I find mine at walmart, by the carnation milk and baking stuff, also I had ordered it from online stores the powdered one, is more economical. and great to keep on hand, If I have any left over I put the powder in a ziploc baggie and freeze it, when I need it again I just take it out of the freezer and put it in a plastic container. http://www.vitacost.com/Meyenberg-Kosher-Goat-Milk-Powder-with-Vitamin-D?csrc=MSNSHPB-072904000028&srccode=cii_18492716&cpncode=00-64552740-2 |
I highly suggest you give him 1/2 goats milk and 1/2 baby rice cereal mixed with kayro syrup. At this point he needs something solid to hold to his ribs so to speak. I'd syringe feed him atleast 3 cc's every 3 to 4 hours. Once you see this helping him to get stronger then start adding in dry kibble that is made into a powder with a coffee bean grinder. It makes the dry kibble like instant coffee grounds and then add that to the baby rice cereal mixture. It will also help if you keep the liver mixture in this too, the liver will help him alot with the mixture I suggested. I would surely add them all together. I hope your little man improves!! |
I also forgot to add give him a little bit of Pedialyte to help keep his electrolytes in balance. I'd give him atleast 2 to 4 cc's a day. |
I just went through this with a pup!! He is now 21 weeks and doing well. I had to FORCE and I mean force feed this guy. I put the canned food in his mouth and held it closed with his head tipped up and with my other hand gently rubbed his neck. I fed him this way every 4 hours around the clock for 4 weeks, then every 6 hours for 3 weeks and finally to every 8 hours. It was a struggle and you actually feel awful for forcing them to eat but it has to be done. Unless of course the puppy is vomiting or otherwise sick. How large is his head in comparison to his body? My vet says that there is correlation with the smaller bodies and larger heads in percentile and them having crashing blood sugar wise. When their sugar is lower they do not want to eat. They get dehydrated and the vicious cycle begins and many lose these babies in the middle of the night/This evens out eventually if you can keep enough calories in them. I mixed his AD with nutracal for the first 4 weeks. In the beginning he felt so crappy he just laid there. Within a week he started fighting me more and more. The next few weeks we fed just the AD forcefully still. He would back up and scream, pretend to swallow and spit it out. But he had spunk and was playing more and more. After that we then we tried wellness core canned (which he hated) I bought a can of every kind you could imagine just to get him to eat. He refused them all so eventually he ended eating the Instinct raw on his own with lots of encouragement. His body has finally caught up to his head size and he is eating the raw without any problems. I have never fed raw before but a breeder that has been breeding chihuahuas for over 20 years had me try that and she has had this problem quite a bit with her Chis. When it all began I had a CMP done and liver panel and it showed high ALT and BUN and Creatine but he had not been eating well or drinking when I rushed him there that day. So after all these weeks I did have his bile acid test done before he just went to his new pet home and it came back within normal range. |

Thank you for your imput and your suggesions. They mean a lot to me. All of you YTers!!! Suz |
The Kennel Shop and Petsmart both have it. Check online and they will tell you where there is a retailer nearby. I would keep force feeding him though. Even a tiny tummy ache and these tinies stop eating. If you look at my avatar, Emma the tiny one is full grown at 1 pound 10 ounces. I had to do this exact thing with her. She was too small for a blood draw and the vet was doing the sub-q fluids. I just decided I would do what ever it took to keep her alive as long as she was not in pain. She has a cleft palate but it is way in the back in just the soft palate so she eats without difficulty. I force fed her until she was 5 or 6 months and she would get all cranky and scream each time I fed her. But it kept her going. I had been feeding her homemade food for a year now and she is still fussy. Sometimes it has to have cottage cheese, others I have to add Parmesan cheese. When I was doing the Instinct raw with Henry I tried it on her. She LOVES it! She has been eating that for a couple of months now and I just mix the medallions of each..Lamb, Chicken, Beef and she gets variety that way. I wish you luck with your little guy. I will keep him in my prayers. |
Wel folks, it breaks my heart to tell you this, but we lost him. He just kept getting worse. I took him to the vet and he said that there wasn't anything left to do. He was so bad it just broke our hearts to see him like he was. He couldn't walk, stand for any longer than about 5 seconds, and his head just kept rolling to the side. I appreciate all of everyone's good wishes, prayers and everything else. But the time had come to let him go. God wanted him for a reason. Smart guy, God is. Thank all of you for your suggestions on feeding him and all. |
I am so sorry for your loss. Your little one is now at peace in Gods loving arms. |
I am so very sorry for your loss. You did all you could, but sometimes these fragile lives are only here to bless us with a moment or two or their time and love. Now he will rest painfree and easy over the Rainbow Bridge. |
I am so sorry for your loss. You put your heart and soul into trying to help little Bug survive, and I know it hurts. His little heart and being will always touch your heart, and he will not be forgotten. It's tragic to lose one so young. I hope his mom and brothers and sisters thrive under your care and love. You are in my thoughts and prayers. |
i once had a pup that was fading and i had him on iv for 4 days and 3k later i brought him home in the same condition i feed him around the clock with a prescription puppy food mixed with water thru a syringe every two hours for two weeks. He was just small. was tested for LS and everything else. He was just a baby about eating. hes 2 now and thriving! |
I am so sorry it is very hard to lose one..hugs to you and family |

I am so sorry to hear about the little baby but at least he is now out of his bad situation. Am so sad to hear what he had to go through. Hope the rest of the littler is flourishing. |
I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard these times are. I tube fed Princess Gracie for two weeks, every two hours around the clock without missing 5 minute's and she survived beyond what the vet had predicted. It was emotionally draining and exhausting.. She is 6 years old now and I kept her. She is my little princess.. But you must tell yourself you did everything you could to help this baby. sending hugs.. |
