8 oz and 11 weeks old. Going downhill!! HELP
 

If there is anyone ot there that can answer this right away, I would really appreciate it.
My little one is 8 ounces and 11 weeks old I have been feeding him Nutra-Cal and chicken and whatever else he wants. Last night, he started going down hill. Now he is not even taking the Nutra-Cal. I am having to force feed him water!! Does anyone have any ideas?

yes. I called the vet. He's been to the vet 3 times for this. It comes and goes, but this ones the worst. I put this in the "sick puppy" forum too. Maybe with it being in both forms we can get him thru it!!

buy beef liver and boil it in about 6 onz of water, take that broth and mix it with soft good quality puppy food and a bit of goat's milk, put a bit on your finger and put it in his mouth, do this every two hours, that is what I do for my puppies.is very important to get some food on him, you can also add half a teaspoon of vanilla yogurt to the mix for a bit of sweet flavor, I have save a few puppies with this.. so please give it a try..

Get that baby to the vet for sub-q fluids w/glucose. Have the vet show you how and bring some home. When a tiny gets weak, organ failure can come on quickly. You can't feed him enough water to see him through this.

He's been to the vet already. I am giving him Ringers twice a day 5 cc's a day. And he's getting fluid by syringe about every 2 hours.

Woogieman is an experienced breeder who has experience with fading pups please listen to him. Youve got to find a vet that will put him on IV fluids

If the sub-q solution has no glucose, you may not be doing the good you think. Most solutions are some type of sodium chloride w/out glucose. They help with hydration only. Not eating and not taking nutri-cal is not good. The baby's not getting any glucose or protein. You could try some karo instead of the nutri-cal. It tends to get into the system faster than nutri-cal, but this one sounds like it needs more intensive care than just that.

Chachi, I doubt that a vet could do IV on such a small one. The veins are too tiny. The fluids I'm mentioning would be most likely given sub-q.

Oh that makes sense to me now that I think about it thats what they did to Chachi when he was little and had a bout of diahrea and they said he needed fluids. Thats been 6 yrs ago so I forgot

I am so sorry your baby is not doing well. As a breeder myself, I would be very concerned about his size. Has the vet considered that he may have a liver shunt? Often puppies with liver shunts do not thrive and they have blood sugar problems. What kind of food did you wean him on?

If you have been giving him a lot of Nutri-cal then his pancreas might be exhausted. Please read the following article:

I realize your little one is an older puppy but this solution might help him. The first thing is to get him stable. If you keep giving him different types of food then you might be doing more harm than good. It could be upsetting his tummy. I recommend you get a good quality dry puppy food and grind it up. You can make a mush using 1/2 goats milk mixed with 1/2 water. Or in place to the goat milk you can use some canned Pedigree Puppy food mixed with the ground up dry food.

Woogie Man, You are exactly right when you said that he couldn't be given fluids IV. His veigns are too small for the vet to find. I have switched to Karo Syrup and am giving him the boiled beef liver recipe that Kimberly put on here. (I am sorry for not knowing your last name.) He's still hanging in there. And so are we!! What I find strange, is that his brothers and sisters are so much different than he is. He is the only one that has this strange problem. I have been breeding Yorkies for about 10 years, and nothing like this has ever come up. It seems to me, like if he has it, whatever it is, then is siblings would have something also. He never wanted mommie at all. And she tried, believe me she did!! He just kept shunning her. That seems backwards to me too!! I can't find goats milk anywhere!! Vons doesn't have it, Stater Bro's nor Ralph's do either. At least not here, where I live. Do health food stores carry it? I'm willing to try just about anything at this point. :whiteflag::whiteflag::whiteflag:He's not exactly older. He just turned 11 weeks yesterday.

I find mine at walmart, by the carnation milk and baking stuff, also I had ordered it from online stores the powdered one, is more economical.
and great to keep on hand, If I have any left over I put the powder in a ziploc baggie and freeze it, when I need it again I just take it out of the freezer and put it in a plastic container.
