Would like to Stud But don't know where to start
 

Hi All, I am trying to look into studding my 4 year old Benjamin. I had an offer last year, but the breeder never called me when his female went into heat. :-\

So I was just curious if there were any ideas or suggestions on how to get out there and where to find breeders who would be interested in my boy. I've been to a few websites, but they charge an advertising fee. :(

Well, you first need to get educated about the whole breeding process and the right steps to do it the right way, that is a great start for you. Here in YT there are quite a few "stickies" about breeding that can give you a little jump start.
Think that no matter if own the male or the female to be bred, you are a breeder. i am sure if you want to do this you will want to do it the right way and for the right reasons. Start looking into the testings that need to be performed before deciding to breed a dog.

Something to think about - nobody reputable would ever consider approaching you to use your male at stud unless
1. championed.
2. excellent pedigree with well known champions in the pedigree
3. you know if any health issues are in his line.
4. What are his faults what are his assets?
You need to ask yourself what exactly would he contribute to the breed if he were to pass on his genes?

I completely agree with Lorraine. I am just starting out in the breeding process. However, I will tell you that just because a male is cute or has a good temperament does not qualify a male dog to be stud worthy. I went through owning 5 yorkie males before I found a male that qualified to meet all of the standards and would actually asset the breed. All of the others I had to neuter. Do I still love them? Of course I do. Do I think they would have made pretty babies? Yes. But would they have improved the breed? No. These are some of the questions you need to think about before choosing to stud your dog. You also have to consider the health risks involved in breeding your male. If both the male and female have not been checked for diseases and other health issues, you are opening him up to disease. I am not trying to preach, but I do want to make you aware of what is involved. Normally when choosing to stud your dog, the female has to be brought to your male. Are you prepared to mate them properly and take on the responsibility of the b*tch? My suggestion to you is to watch a proper mating done by a reputable breeder first. Ask him or her all of your questions before you decide to go on this venture.

If you decide to go ahead and offer stud services, I think you have to be a donating member to advertise on this site, also.

Oops. :facepalm: Did not know. Glad you saw the thread and posted! :) Good to know. I took the OPs post as wanting to know how to get the word out she wanted to stud her male. (I could be misreading - it is before 9 am!)

@ Gidget I kind of was.. But after reading all the other posts.. I am second guessing myself...Not that i mind putting in the time effort and research but I suppose my guy really doesnt have much to offer the breed...

I think you made a wise decision. Your little guy will be a better pet if you don't stud him out.
