Nervous new momma My dog Jewel, after 1 still born and a couple vet visits gave birth to a healthy puppy about 2 and a half hrs. ago. She is very nervous and has yet to let the pup suckle, she wants to hide under the bed with it. We have her in a dog kennell with a throw over it and in a quiet room. Please any advice on what to do would be helpful, thanks. |
you can not sit with her and help the pup get a tit?? I would really have the vet help you get her to nurse at first for the colstrum. And then it may be you need to bottle feed this little one. Dont mess around time is not on your side she needs to get something in her very soon. I would really have the vet helping you out with this. You sure she is done having pups whats making her so nervous? |
and if she is under your bed will she feed the pup. i say whatever it takes till she gets comfortable. just so she doesn't hurt the pup watch close. |
Well, I have been trying to help her get started but to no avail, she is just a very highstrung dog. I sent my husband to get the goat's milk and stuff to feed the puppy myself if she doesn't calm down here soon. I don't want to let her take the puppy under our bed as they would be out of my reach, lol. I have her crated with puppy now, thinking maybe giving her some space might help. |
that first feeding is so important ? does she have milk? yes i would worry if she is that nervous she may hurt the puppy on accident. I sure hope she calms down soon for you and the pups sake.. Hopefully someone who is more experienced will chim in and maybe give you some good advice. The vet just sent you on your way and did not give you and ideas how to settle her down |
she does have milk, I just tried what you suggested and held her down, the puppy didn't have any luck latching on. I'll try again in a few, the puppy was born here, not at the vets, so I would rather not go back since she was so nervous there, probably would not help. My husband is on the way home with the goats milk, so I will make sure she gets some nourishment one way or another. |
hmmm you would think it would be hungry and at least try... Keep us posted i think i would at least call the vet and ask ideas.... I would worry there where more pups and that is why she has not settled down. You sure she only was to have two? |
I would put a pillow in my lap, and let her lay on it then put the puppy by her tit, she wants to be soothe by you, my girl still lays on my lap while her litter sleeps. just sit with her and let her relax, I sleep on a beach chair next to the whelping box for the first week.. my litter is only 3 days old.. my back suffer but my girl and her pups are happy..:) |

YES she is, just inmagine what she is going thru, she needs to know that you are there for her, once you relax with her in your lap she will too.. my babies were docked today and my girl was a mess I am sitting here on the floor by the whelping box so she can look at me and I keep reasuring her that her babies are ok. so you might have to do this too, the good part is is more YT time...LOL |
Just wondering how it's going |
She seems to be feeling less stressed, I did give the pup some goat's milk formula and gave her back to mom. So I decided to lay down for a bit and just checked on them and she had another puppy! Both pups are snuggled up with mom now, and she seems much calmer so am hoping things are looking better. Wow, yesterday at this time i had no idea she was even pg, she didn't show at all. |
Wow I wondered about that when you said she was so nervous. I thought she maybe trying to have another. I am so glad she is relaxing now. You didn't even know she was pregnant? Would love to see pictures |
Yes, mom seems much calmer now, still doesn't seem like either has actually suckled, but they are snuggled up with her, not crying so will just keep a good eye on them. I have the goat's milk formula, so am ready to supplement if needed. Little girl weighed 4.9 oz. and boy 4.5 oz, so plan on constant weighing to make sure they are eating! I knew she was in heat about 2 mos. ago, but thought I had done a good job on keeping them apart as I had a cruise planned and didn't want puppies while I was gone, whew, got home last week! She didn't show at all and must not have gained much, I had no clue. Luckily the only intact male around is my 4lb Sydney, so we know who daddy is! |
Congratulations Can't wait to see pictures... |
I hope things are going well. Looking forward to some pics. Congrats. |
Thanks, I haven't had a chance to take pics yet, still pretty worried about the little girl. She still is not latching on to mom, I have been feeding her myself and she does eat, but I am very worried as I have had this happen before with not good results. So any encouragement would be welcome. My vets just say to bottle feed and keep her warm. Good news is baby boy is doing fine, sucking away mightily! |
Thanks for the update. I was wondering all night how they where doing. Many people bottle feed and the pups do okay. Is mom at least licking and cleaning her? She needs that stimulation I would try each time before you feed her to get her to nurse. I sure hope she catches on. |
Are you using a heating pad beneath their bedding? |
when my dog had pups in march the smallest one was just under 2oz i used to open pups mouth and put her on the teat nearest to the back legs these seemed to be the fullest ones then held her on for a few minutes i used to touch the mums tummy to move it slightly to encourage the pup to suckle it worked for us but we was putting the pup on every two hours good luck hope everything goes well |
Francis. I'll be home in about an hour if you still have my number give me a call or email me your number and i'll call you. Terri |
Just to update, we did lose the little girl, vet thinks she probably had congential defect as she just went down so quickly, plus it was a very difficult birth, she was stuck in there too long. Good news is the little boy is thriving, he has gained weight already. and yes, I do have heating pad, believe me, I tried everything I could to save her. Very depressed over it, no more puppies for me, I can't do this again. |
Awwwww well you tried that is all you can do. Glad the little boy is doing well |
I'm so sorry to hear you lost the little girl, it can be hard when we decide to breed. I too lost a little girl about a week ago and ended up spaying my female and now have two little boys who are doing very well. Again I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. |
[QUOTE=horsnaround;3573626]Awwwww well you tried that is all you can do. Glad the little boy is doing well[/QUOT Thanks, I guess it wasn't meet to be. The little male is doing awesome, mom is doing a good job with him, he will probably balloon up quick being the only one. |

LOL... Yeah I've ended up keeping a couple over the years that I maybe shouldn't have but hey, thats alright too. The reason I had her spayed was because we ended up doing an emergency c section due to a twisted uterus and I just thought it would be the best for her. |
2 Attachment(s) Here's my little guy, he's quite active and gaining weight nicely. |
He looks to be a healthy little boy and I love that tiny little ear... so small and pointed. Can I make a suggestion? I would take a clipper and shave Jewels tummy area, this would make suckling alittle easier for the little one. I'm looking forward to watching him grow up, again Congratulations! |
