Pregnant yorkie ... Hello everyone ; I'm new to this website but I do have two yorkies a male and a female whom I believe is pregnant , and her due date is on April 18th. I just wanted some advice on what to do when the puppys are born and any signs of complications I should look for. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you |
Welcome to YT. It sounds more like you know she is pregnant if you know the due date. Have you taken her to the vet for a check up? Do you have supplies ready for delivery. There is going to be alot of advice coming your way so hang on. I wish you the best! |
Yes I've taken her to the vet and he said she's pregnant , her stomach is starting to get bigger my question is more of when she has the puppies what needs to be done nd also I've got the bottles and milk just in case she doesn't feed the puppies I just need to get the whelping box. This is her first litter and I'm just really nervous |

Second review threads on this site as many questions have been asked and answered but; It is best if you are inexperienced to have a "whelping" coach with you and or your vet. If you don't already have one, then look up your local breed club and or talk to the breeders of your pair to see if they can help you out. Yorkies often need help with delivery, and you need to be prepared for that financial cost if a "c" section is required. good luck with your whelp |
Also here is another link to a good website:Dog Breeding and Canine Reproduction by Debbie Jensen. Dog Breeding and Whelping guide for dog breeders. |
Thank you I'll be sure to look through the site and find as much information as I can. |

Find a quiet area where she will whelp....away from traffic and drafts....start keeping her there..... A whelping coach is definately a must, danger signs are many..... |
My Sadie just had her first and last litter. It was to hard on her and to hard on me. I took the advice of all the YT breeders here and I got a mentor which made it a little easier for me. My mentor was awesome, she knew exactly what to do and when to do it. The puppies are now a week old and thriving. Momma is still having some issues with lose stool and she is on antibiotics for infection. Complications can arise very quickly so please have a mentor. Good luck with your pups. |

Still here and have thought about Sadie often. I hope she is doiig fine and her little ones too. Sadie is so young it's like a baby having babies. I pray for her. |

woaw- are all puppies doing well? thats Really early if the due date was over 2 weeks away... i take it there was a mix up? let us know what the vet says about her leg! was she given a strong course of antibiotics and and anti inflamitory? that might be the problem, but of course your vet will know! we are all thinking of her! |
Thanks for the advice I'm glad your dog had a good delivery and she and her puppys are fine. Where do you think I could find a good mentor in the Chicago area ? |
Hi there. I don't know anything about whelping a litter, but from reading here you may want to take her in for xrays sometime after the 55th day so that you are prepared as to how many puppies are to be delivered. There is a tremendous amount of information on here so be prepared to read a lot. I really just wanted to welcome you here and leave the advice to the others who know what they are talking about. I am sure they will be on here to do that soon. Hi and welcome! |

Wish the OP well! If you trust your breeder that you bought your yorkies from, see if she would be willing to act as your mentor and delivery coach. Debbie Jensen's site is full of great info! I copied almost all of it off to read over and over! You don't have much time, they can come early just like people. My girl surprised me a little the first time, being a little early but was right on her due date the second time. Don't hesitate to ask questions. Did you get xrays so you know how many puppies to expect? That is very reassuring so you know she is done. Follow your instincts if you think something is not going right and get help! This is crucial. All may go smoothly and I pray that it does, but you MUST be prepared for the problems that arise so often. |
I have taken her to the vet but I have to go again when she is on her 55th day so he can do the X-ray , also I do trust the breeder I got her from but the problem is she lives a couple hours away and I don't think she would be able to come all the way over here to help me with her labor , is there another way I could find a mentor in my area ? |
