Breeders in Georgia
 

HI! We are looking for our first yorkie puppy. We live in Georgia. I have been in contact with Debbie at Yorkmont Yorkshire Terriers. She seems very knowledgable and asked me a lot of questions about what we are looking for, our lifestyle, etc. I would be required to leave a large deposit (once deciding on our new puppy), then go home and set up our nursery and go back in about a week to pick up the pup. Her pups are about 5 months. I like her but it is so hard to know who to trust. We would be investing so much in this puppy (both financially and love) that I just want to be sure I am getting what I have been promised. Basically, it is just so hard to know who to trust. There are so many horror stories out there. Any advice?

I have searched her website; no mention of health tests done on breeding dams/sires. She is not listed as having any "CHIC" numbers . CHIC is a health data base repository where breeders submit their health tests and once the preapproved number are done the breeder gets a CHIC number.

The guarantee is not available on her website. What I also noticed is that, all her males appear to be championed, what about her females?

Does she BAT test every puppy prior to releasing to the pet owners home?

Maybe you have already addressed these questions with her, but they would be some of the ones I would be asking.

And quite frankly I don't understand why US breeders sell a purebred dog without papers, partiuclarly given she spays and neuters prior to placing in a pet home.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. We have talked to several breeders in our new puppy search, which started several months ago. Finally came to the realization a couple months ago that the ONLY way we were going to feel truly comfortable and trusting was to work with an exhibitor/breeder. They are breeding only to try for a show dog, so you know your puppy is going to LOOK like a standard Yorkie. They do all the testing required to ensure their dams and sires are HEALTHY so your puppy will have the best possible chance of also being healthy. They will be there for you in the future if you have problems with your puppy. They provide the information and support you need AFTER you bring your puppy home. They truly care about the lives they are bringing into the world. It is well thought out and planned. It really is the best possible scenario to ensure your puppy will be a healthy, happy addition to your family. The only downside that I see? They only occasionally have a puppy to place in a pet home so you may have to be patient. I would definitely talk to the breeder's Mary has suggested. I am in central Texas and even considered these breeders, one in particular. Good luck and keep us posted on your search!

Every breeder show or not should be evaluated for the criteria you want in a dog. There are a few stickies here about this.

Beyond what can be tested for in the breeding pair, is the very key information on the health of the line. Many things can not be tested for and there is only one genetic test I know of for Yorkies, that can help weed out genetically a particular health condition.

Of course you want to know that the breeding pair is free and have been tested for a whole lot of the problems that Yorkies are prone to; however unfortunatley for the breeders it is not a 100% guarantee the pups themselves will be free of those conditions. But it is a very good start and the best we have at the moment.

For show breeders you at least have the opportunity to see their dogs in the rings, to cross check the Championships earned, and to see the "type" of Yorkie that they are breeding. You also have a chance to check into the temperament of the breeding pair, given both have been out there getting their championship.

I think when you are planning a $2000 or so investment, it behooves the buyer to settle back and examine a whole host of factors, starting at just what do I want in my Yorkie? I think for pet owners first is overall health, second is temperament. Do you want a go getter, an explorer, a bouncy full of pep dog, or a dog more laid back. What kind of training do you want to take your dog through? do would you like to do agility, flyball, rally, obedience, scent work, dock diving? Would you like to do/ have your dog certified as a service dog?
All Yorkies are small, the standard sets the max weight at 7 lbs, do you want something at the larger end of the scale, or smaller at 4-5 lbs?

If you want to work with your Yorkie in any of the venues I mentioned, then for all those venues you will need a dog with confidence. All good breeders should Temperament Test their dogs, and share with you those results.

I know Ava of Tyava Yorkies (Marietta), Vicki of Sugarfoot personally and they are fantastic. And Renaissance yorkies are also very nice as well. These are the ones Mary recommended, as I would too and you could not go wrong with them. All very nice yorkies and very nice quality and truly care about the health and quality of their dogs. Also you might want to try Lisa Farmer of Tip Top, she is in Gainesville, GA If they do not have a litter - then they/we will recommend others that we trust. Best wishes in your search.

That's quite a list from some exceptionally great and trusted breeders/members! You really should take their advise- it be gold! :D you may be in for a wait, but oh how worth it it will be!!!!
I just wish y'all knew the n.I breeders; oh what use that would be! *sigh*
I only know of one couple that I can and do trust!

I forgot Lisa Farmer. She took a sabatical from the ring and breeding...but she had Frankie "Ch. Tip Top Come Fly With Me" Which was a top dog. He's since passed away.

Lisa is back now and has not missed a beat. She is winning and has some exceptional Yorkies. Yes, Frankie was amazing and one of a kind. He is truly missed and was Lisa's special baby and truly spoiled.

Every time I hear Frank Sinatra sing Come Fly With Me I think of Frankie....that boy was gorgeous...

Went to see Ava at TyAva today and came home with the most adorable 5 month male yorkie. He is exactly what we were looking for and my daughter and I absolutely fell in love. He is so sweet and loves to sit in our laps. Thanks so much for the referral! I really feel good about this puppy!

Well, shoot! Don't get me wrong, I am sooo happy for you. But, this is not the way it works. Hadn't you heard? You are supposed to spend agonizing hours interviewing breeders until you find one you like and then wait months on end until they have a litter and then keep your fingers crossed that they place one in a pet home and you are the lucky one who gets the pet. ;)

Well, she did want to keep him for show and only showed him to us because he was the brother of one she was selling. Of course when she brought him out, we had a total fit and begged her to sell him to us!!! He is the cutest, sweetest thing we have ever seen! He was crying last night because he was in his crate in the den (my daughter slept on the couch to be with him but I don't think he knew she was there). He started crying around midnight so I came down and slep in the recliner and turned on the tv so he could see me. Never cried again once he knew someone was down here.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :thumbup::thumbup: You made an excellent choice. My Toto is one of Ava's babies too. She is TyAva's Out of Oz, Toto and her Dad is TyAva's Wyatt Earp. Ava is wonderful and has great breeding lines ... Toto will be 8 years old in July. She has always been healthy and has the sweetest, funniest little personality. She is our joy! Ava will always be interested in the progression of your baby and will help you with any questions, etc. you ever have. I am looking forward to hearing all about your adventures with your little guy and watching him grow. :)

I too am getting a baby yorkie from a great and respectable breeder here in Canada, Durrer/Vickilyn , and can hardly stand the wait! I think there's a song called that! LOL
