Rescue Mama and puppies need advice!! I have a rescue yorkie Molly that gave birth to 6 puppies a 9 days ago. Puppies and mama are doing great but I have a question as to when can I give Molly a bath?? I have been keeping her clean with a warm wet washcloth but she sure could use a bath!! She also has a couple of spots of skin bacteria infection that I put ointment on daily so the hair around there is really oily looking. Any advice would be appreciated!! Thanks..shelley

| I would ask the vet about the ointment. You don't want any of the pups to ingest it while trying to nurse. I think I would wait on the bath to. Mama might be upset being away from the pups.

The vet prescribed the ointment after the puppies were born, it is safe to use while nursing. The vet said he didn't care when I bathed but I wanted some advice from someone with experience!! Molly is doing great being away from the pups for about 10-15 minutes several times a day. Any more advice would be appreciated.

I bathe my mom's the 3 rd day...let her nurse them...bath her, blow her dry and back to puppies...takes about 20 mins for a clipped bitch. You can give a half bath..stand her in the tub and wash from the middle down...

I usually give a bath 3-5 days depending on how messy mom is. Just remember when you do give her a bath to make sure to rinse her tummy/teat area really well to remove any soap/shampoo residue. Last edited by yorkiegirl2; 03-05-2011 at 01:45 PM.
