what type of regular adult food did you have her on? Have you tried that same brand but in the puppy form? I am feeding my little girl with Wellness puppy... I recommend Nutro Ultra as well, kind of expensive but very good Holistic food... try to add some cottage cheese or hard boiled egg into her food, maybe that can help her eat the actual kibble... I just had puppies yesterday, so all this is nice & fresh in my mind, Good luck with her & enjoy this time...

Try mixing some of her regular food in with the puppy food. Mine stayed on regular food till after she had them and then went to puppy food. I also use the Wellness Puppy and she eats it right up. The main thing is to keep her eating. How far along is she?

It is early...and her body is not requiring a lot of calories just yet...I would feed her what ever she will eat.
I crush puppy Bil Jac or puppy Eukanuba and roll it into a meat ball mixture of beef or ground chicken and veggies...feed by hand if need be..

Glad to hear she is eating now. They can have times where they just don't eat too much for a few days and then make up for it the next. At least that is what Bella did.

Not sure what your vet is thinking. An x-ray is pretty much useless until about day 55 and a bitch should NOT get calcium supplements during pregnancy. Here's a little info on feeding and supplements.

"Never give your pregnant dog calcium supplements, for extra calcium may predispose your dog to uterine inertia, a condition that impairs contractions during delivery."

I could go on and on with links recommending against using calcium supplements on a pregnant dog. Unless your vet has a specific reason (such as your girl having low blood calcium) you should not be using it at this time. It's not something you do 'just because'. Calcium is advised once the pups are born, however.

Totaly agree, Every thing Ive learned about whelping the number one rule for mom is no calcium supplements during, Its okay after to help with her milk supply, But during it could make her labor contractions week, Calcium in food is fine like cottage cheese,puppyfood, eggs, but not supplements, and xrays that soon uhm... Not sure what your vets doing!

"Life is so hectic right now. Sadie is in heat, Scooter is keeping me so busy. Someone suggested to me to have Scooter go to a friend or family members house until Sadie is out of heat. How would my baby boy feel then? He already thinks I hate him because he is not allowed around her, no walks with her. I do not trust anyone in my family to take care of my babies the way I would want them taken care of you see, my family looks at a dog and sees a dog, I see my family when I look at my dogs. I am packing up the house so that I can move next weekend on top of all of this. I think I am just worn out and I think this is only day 6 of her heat, how am I going to do this for 21 days? I am so tired because of the constant worry that he is going to get to her."

"She said Sadie and Scooter tied for about 10 minutes. Sadie is 10 months old and Scooter is only 6 months old. Sadie started her heat on the first of Jan. Sadie weighs 8 pounds and that is soaking wet. I am talking to the vet in the morning to see what she says. From your posts it does sound like an accidental breeding (on your part, not sure about your trusted family member though) I would talk to your vet to see about getting her spayed now so she (a puppy) doesn't have to go through the pregnancy and birthing process. If you had no intentions of breeding her, I think it's still early enough that you can get her spayed with a small risk of complications. If your vet isn't confident enough to take on this spay, talk to other vets in your area. Find one that specializes in smaller breeds and see what they have to say. It's unlikely that your baby girl is even going to know what to do with puppies if she has them, are you really ready to step up and feed, clean, release their bowels, all the things momma dog does?
It doesn't sound like your vet has much experience with pregnant mothers, so I'd start looking for a new one to help you with your girls pregnancy if you choose to allow it to go through.

Ugh, are you suggesting what it sounds like you are suggesting? Maybe I am ignorant, but is this really an option? Seems like she is several weeks into this pregnancy.

If they tied on the 28th of Jan, that means she is about 4 weeks along...personally I think it's a better option than having a baby have babies of her own. Though, because I'm not a breeder or a vet I have no idea if this is a real option anymore...had she reacted quickly it shouldn't have even been a problem, but she has allowed this pregnancy to go on so long I'm not sure.

There is such a thing as a spay during pregnancy. I'm not sure on the time frame, but it can be done. I believe there are posts regarding it here on YT.

I thought calcium during pregnancy was not a good thing. I thought it was to be given after the whelp( I could be wrong, maybe someone here can and will correct me). Have you put her on a quality puppy food, or is she still on one considering her age? When Elsa was pregnant I switched her to a puppy formula.

All surgeries are risky, giving birth to puppies at 10 months old is risky...in your situation you have to decide which risk you are willing to take. Just because a vet has been practicing for 40+ years doesn't make him that much better than a vet that is fresh out of college. There are all kinds of new procedures that he may not be up to date on, esp. if he hasn't continued his education throughout his career. Why not talk to a couple other vets, I'm sure there are more in your area that can provide additional advice.

:thumbup::thumbup: Agree whole heartedly!! I think she wants to maintain the pregnancy. She said she is capable of handling what may come her way. What we need to do is pray for this little one.

She maybe prepared, but what about Sadie. This is like a 10 year old girl getting pregnant, is it better to let her have the baby or opt for the other option. Neither option looks good, but you have to think of quality of life, and survival rates. Not to mention, a little girl doesn't have that "maternal instinct" yet...
Oh well, I've given my opinions and I pray that Sadie does well and everything goes smoothly, and everyone is happy in the end. Good luck with the long road ahead.

When this all first started I had a female vet. She said the exact same things that this vet is saying. I have seen three different vets now and I like this man. He is caring and says he will be there if complications arise, no matter what. I asked him, in a jokingly way, what if you are out of town? He says to me, I will come to you if you need me I promise. Granted , he does cost a little more than the other two but I like the way he is with her.

Why would you believe that. This pregnancy, in No way, was intended. If I had wanted her to get pregnant why did I try so hard for her not to?
You do not know me so do not judge me. I am a very responsible pet owner, my fault was in trusting someone else and I learned my lesson.
My animals, all of them, are loved, cared for, vetted and spoiled. It upsets me to no end that you would post this. My babies get health care when I go without so do not judge, you do not know.

i think that your vet is possibly too old and outdated to understand all the new and better technology surrounding dogs and birth. i would certainly find a second "fresher" opinion if i were you.

with all the tons of yorkie mom's coming onto this site for help with whelps and pregnant dogs both planned and unplanned you have to understand that for those of us that truely love the yorkie breed it is getting mighty frustrating and heartbreaking to keep having people with little to no experience in whelping and/or breeding doing it anyways. so whether you planned it or not doesn't matter to me. you didn't spay her and you allowed her to be around an unaltered male. it's totally your fault no matter how you look at it and now you must suffer the consequences of your actions and possibly have a hard time with your baby and her pups. i mean you could really lose her over this puppy. i would have personally spayed her when you first knew there was a CHANCE of her getting pregnant, but you chose not to and look where you are.

i wish you the best of luck and prayers for a safe and great whelp, but it does break my heart for your dog that she now has to suffer because her mom didn't protect her from this.

Was she in or out of heat? Contradictions in statements is what confuses me, or sets my mind a thinking... I am so stuck on this.

I am not trying to start an argument but I do believe you were not careful enough with Sadie and the male or you just wanted her to get pregnant.

Well, I do not know you but I do wish the best for Sadie and you. BTW, I hope your sister who is a surgical nurse can do all for her, if the need arises. Does she nurse humans or dogs?
