Very lethargic puppy Well, I hate to say this, but he seems more and more lethargic. Tomorrow is Voting Day, which is extremely important to me, and I have to take my folks to vote. So I may call in the AM and see if I can get an afternoon appt. w/the vet or call and see if I should bring him in......I don't know at what age, size, weight, etc., they can do any kind of test to determine if he has a liver shunt or something else. I don't want to sound alarmist, but if it was my pup I think I would be calling the emergency clinic for guidance since he seems to be getting worse. Especially if you plan to be gone much of the morning. Hope everything turns out ok for the little fella. |

Oh Lin, where did you go ? I really think this little guy needs to go to the ER tonight. If he's getting lethargic after eating , this is not good at all and sounds like Liver shunt. If he's having any other symptoms please post them here so others can see. Actually you need to get him to the ER first, then post. When you take him in , tell them he gets lethargic after eating. It's very important that you tell them that. |

Very lethargic puppy Yes, he's lethargic, but we're feeding him pablum about every 4 hours. I gave him some water in a syringe to be sure he was getting some. I'm going to call my vet's office first thing in the AM (setting the alarm). I know the vets don't actually get there until around 8, but I can be there. He doesn't seem to be 'fading'. We'll keep a close eye on him tonight and 'demand' they see him in the AM unless they say there's nothing you can do even if it is liver shunt, at this age. A friend just told me they can't till until around 12-15 weeks. Is that true? But that there is a hypoglocymia monitor or something in case that's what it is. Don't understand why he would be SO sleepy right after eating. You'd think he'd have a little energy. Will get back to everyone as soon as I talk to vet's office in the early AM tomorrow. |
I would leave him with your vet for the day if you are going to be out...they can feed and monitar him. Hoping the best for your little guy...there really is little you can do about a shunt at this point...testing would kill him. AND...it could be many other things. |
Very lethargic puppy Called the vet's office today and was able to speak with my 'main' vet. I explained everything to him. He was encouraged that he plays---some. He did say he's way too tiny to do a bile acid test on so keep doing what I'm doing and he wants to see him in 2 weeks. He said it might not be LS, could be something else, but he seems to be doing okay in our care. I told him we've stepped up the baby rice cereal in formula feedings (out of a baby spoon.lol). He agreed I should feed him 'often'. So that's where we are now. He weighed 1 lb.1oz. earlier today. His weight does fluxuate. prayers welcomed. Lin |
You are feeding through the night also, right...I would try to get more protein in him...pureed baby food meat and chicken..dilute it...add the blood from beef liver..learned that in the UK when my father bred. |
Very lethargic puppy We keep one of those 'tower' type electic heaters going in the room he (and his litter mates) are in. Yesterday, we moved them in to the kitchen in a 4 x 4 Central Metal puppy pen with a floor grate. Since the floor grate bars seemed too far apart for these little guys, we put (hospital) pads over the entire area. .....which, of course, they love to play with and pull back. I'm just concerned they could get one of those tiny feet hung in there and break a leg/foot. I bought it from an AKC judge/yorkie breeder. So far it's working out. I had a Seabreeze 'bottom' that we put over the 'poopy' area which has really tiny squares, and that seems to be working well.....if they'd leave the pads alone and not pull them back! lol This is the largest Yorkie litter I've ever had. It's like a herd of two year olds. LOL!!! |
Very lethargic puppy Oh, answer to protein. IF it is LS, you don't want too much protein. 50% protein to 50% carbs, and I'm not sure at which point you do that. Guessing as soon as you suspect LS. I've put extremely crumbled up boiled chicken breast in his pablum and he doesn't seem to 'go' for it. That's okay. We've stopped doing that. If he does have Liver Shunt (LS), the chicken wouldn't be particularly good for him because he seems to be eating a tiny bit of the 'soaked' kibble which probably has plenty of protein in it. Such a struggle know what to and not to do. Thanks for ALL suggestions. It makes me think! Any ideas or suggestions along with prayers are welcomed.:) |
Very lethargic puppy I always forget something (or more). We tried baby chicken food and he wouldn't have anything to do with it, but that was 2 or 3 weeks ago. I'll get some more this week and try him again. We do feed him late at night and in the middle of the night/morning---before 6 am-----as in 2:30 AM to 3 AM. Trying to keep that stomach full. :) |
Perhaps, at this age he will lick some pureed meat off your finger..I realize you want a low protein diet for LS..but it also gives you more info to increase protein... |
Very lethargic puppy I tried some baby chicken food a couple of weeks ago and he wouldn't have any part of it, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't now. However, since that's protein, and I don't know if he does or does not have liver shunt, I think I'll wait until he sees the vet in two weeks to see what he thinks. I don't know why, but my gut tells me it's not liver shunt, but what do I know? lol I'm praying he doesn't. Lin |
Just wanted you guys to know so far so good with Nano. He plays a lot when we have him out of the puppy pen. My vet was very interested to know if he 'plays'....and he does. Doesn't play with the other pups too much as they're so much larger than he, they tend to get too rough and he doesn't like that. Don't blame him. lol He has dropped a whole ounce in 24 hours, but he's getting a lot more exercise, too. We'll see how it goes. He's not wanting the baby rice cereal and formula much any more, and can't tell if he's actually eating or just licking the puppy food tossed with some formula. We're keeping a close eye on him. You can't even imagine. lol |
