what is the earliest tail docking can be done?
 
common age is 3 days,
can it be done any earlier?
dew claws can be removed right after birth right?

Day 3 is when they are usually done and dewclaws at the same time.

Never traumatize a newborn...use the clamp method at 3 to 5 days depending on size..it is bloodless, no stitches (that is the painful part)..if you do not know what you are doing, please see a vet.

They normally say day 3 so they have 2 days of not being moved and are stable, you know they are eating, thriving. Not done after day 5 as nerves are growing and want to minimize the pain.

I have mixed feelings about the docking and sort of wish it was removed from our standards. Although I prefer the docked look, I would forgo it if it was not the standard. I feel the same about human male baby circumcism. I think we just do these things and they are really no longer necessary in the day of daily showers for people and easier life for our yorkies. But my husbnd overruled me on the circumcism and I went ahead and docked all of our puppies tails and removed their dew claws. Heard the results of both and I can tell you -- it DOES hurt!

On the dew claws what exactly is that for? Cause when I purchased my beya she came docked and dew claws were taken out.

My vet showed me literature once that it can either be done 20 minutes right after birth or on the second day to 5 day max. It was mentioning both, tail docking and dewclaws removal. It explained the coagulation factors and nerve development and the antibodies from mothers ... i will not remember details but all these 3 factors were counted on determining the best timing to have these procedures done. .
I always had it done on day 2, both procedures. I can do it my self but i have the vets do it and use the surgical glue and absorbent stitches for the tails , it is a clean, fast and worry free way to have it done.

Mine were docked the day after they were born and the dew claws removed too. Kendra

There is no way I would do it before 3 days old. What is the point in traumatizing a newborn?

I have done tails and with the clamp method they don't even hardly cry. I an having problems justifing dew claws. I think they hurt them bad. I have a couple with dew claws and as long as they are trimmed with the nails regular never been a problem.

Purely for safety as I was told they snag easily on carpets, blankets and such. WV Yorkies says if they are kept properly trimmed they won't cause any problems. I have just always had it done as passed along by my mentor. But if it really is not that big of a problem to have them, maybe it is not needed. I have decided not to breed anymore, so I won't be in the decision making seat.

I know the tails or claws site do not cause them any lasting discomfort. Just a squeal when they do it (and I think that is the dew claws not the tails so much). I also had them do 1-2 dissolving stitches and the glue. Never had any problems with the tails and no one complained even when a litter mate decided to chew on them. So, it is not a big cruelty issue. I think it is no more a big deal than piercing your ears, maybe less so as ears so often infect, and none of my puppies ever did.

My breeder does her pups as soon as mom is done whelping..she says its easier on the babies...and they don't even make a sound.

I guess if you were going to do it yourself, that works. But I would not take them in to a vet til the 3rd day. Gives them time to stablize a little and get over the trauma of birth. I alwys hated to even remove them from momma for weight checks and looking them over those first couple of days. My momma was good about letting me handle them tho. I am getting wistful again....good thing I have little Annie to keep me from complete puppy withdrawal. I know I am going to miss breeding them!

Vet usually waits until about day three, but the smaller the dog you can go a few days longer (per vet); however, by day two, they hardly gave a whimper, stitches and all. I think it's best to get it done as soon as possible as every day is a day the nerves, et al become more 'tuned' and thus more pain. Day two, day three...not enough time to concern oneself...as it's literally hours in measurement of difference.

Tail docking at birth sure is a hit or miss IMO...I need a few days to determine where I want to dock..not all can be docked in the same place and look correct to me..but I very fussy...
