questions...expecting soon my female had a litter before and her temp dropped to 98 a day before whelping began. Does the temp ALWAYs drop? or can she still go into labor without a drop like that. Her normal temp in 99.8 and it has been flucuating between 99 and 99.3. I believe that she may be having some contractions. Can a bitch have contractions several days before wheping? like braxton hicks. Im a novice at this. Please no harsh feedback for asking questions. we all have to start somewhere. i am just looking for support here |
No, you will not ALWAYS see a significant drop in temp, although it is more common than not. I have a female who never had a temp drop just prior to whelping. :) |
No not always a drop |

To the OP: temperature drops are very likelly to happen, but it is also common to have no temperature drops or fluctuation days before the delivery , a sudden drop definitely signals an upcoming delivery withing the next 24 hours, but even that have had it's exceptions. There are many signs you need to look for combined: nesting, tired, lack of appetite , temperature, movement of the puppies, milk drop and others. We usually pay attention to the combination and , of course, the mating date can not be forgotten. Anything can happen after day 56 ... But you may not see all the signs together. I had a female who ate until 20 mins before she started pushing hard ... others who had the temp drop 24 hours before labor , did not eat for 30 hours .... some will do this by their own rules, and you just need to go along. Mild Contractions usually start a few days before actual delivery ! Good Luck ! XOXO |

I have had females go into labor when their temperature was around 100. Also, some would eat and a few hours later they would be in labor. They are all different. |

It is getting closer ! XOXO |
her temp has been low for awhile now. She is having contractions but not too close together . how long do your females go after contractions start??? pups are moving like crazy! |

It sure sounds like your girl is getting closer, my advice to you is stop worrying about the temperature so much, give her room to nest , and supervise her other signs. The movement of the puppies show that she is at the point of anything can happen. Her contractions will be for a while, positioning the puppies, opening the cervix and getting ready . This state lasts a while , can be even days. How is her milk? it will drop, meaning it , there will be that partition on the middle of the belly and the nipples will be filling up and red , dark pink. What you mean she is tired? Is she panting? Panting and shivering and digging are all signs of labor :) XOXO |
ITs 345am and she is now digging, panting and milk is in!!! hurry up girl! |
Waiting with baited breath:) Do we have puppies yet?????:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
No!!! Ugg!! i have had no sleep . She is contracting more often. Has some mucus and teets are filling. HOw much long do you think? her temp droped to 98 about 5pm yesterday. She is digging and panting to. Does not look like any are dropping in the canal yet |
Wishing you and your girl a safe whelp. My girl just had 5 and that was easy compared to her behavior right now. Oh and my #5 had 1 1/2 hour wait from #4 to come into the world and it took him 25 mins. Actually once she was pushing it didn't take her long to pop them out, about 1 1/4 hour for the four girls. ;) I felt very lucky! Keep us posted. Dion |

Any pups yet? If she's digging and panting it shouldnt be too much longer before she starts pushing. Mine started making frequent trips to the piddle pad and I'd notice her pushing when she'd pee. The digging and panting got more frequent. It wasnt long after that she started pushing in her whelping box. |
No pups yet:confused:I called the vet. He said it can be 12-24 from the loss of the plug, which was at 7am this morning. But i alway thought it would be 12-24 from the lowest temp drop which was early last night? Does anyone know if dogs contract like humans at all? Like do their contractions get closer together and longer? |

Good luck through your girls whelp. Be sure to give updates please :) |
p.s. my girl would get up and pace, stop and push, pace some more, stop push. I was following her around with my hand under her in case one came out with her push. It was wearing me out so I put her back in her whelping crate and she went ahead and delivered in there. I had a workout that day.....was soooooooo sore the next day. |

How are we doing? Any puppies yet??? (I know, I am impatient, but it is exciting!!!!) |
The temps can drive you nuts. Not to mention be annoying to the mother to constantly have that thermometer ----------------- You know??? I just watch mine. since they are all different, that is about all you can do is watch. Good Luck. Waiting for news. |
Suspense is killing me too....I have no patience. |
Gosh, I have this picture in my mind of lots of YT members pacing up and down in front of the whelping box anxiously awaiting the birth of these puppies.:) |
