I am so happy that he is still with you. is he eating from mama yet? |
You know, he really doesn't look bad at all..nice and shiny means he is hydrated..keep feeding him around the clock as you are doing...best wishes... |
Hi felicity...this little fellow isn't showing too much interest in feeding from Mom yet. He will squirm and crawl to her (like his litter mates), but it's mainly to stay warm...not eat. I keep close watch on him, hoping to see him suckle. It's possible he isn't feeling too hungry since I am tube feeding him. Hopefully he will turn around and do better soon. =) |

you are doing an awesome job !!!!! Keep it up .... it will pay off big deal, you will so happy in 3 weeks when he starts to lick food off the bowl... and recognize your feet when you walk by ... It is rewarding ! Will pass fast ! XOXO |
Thanks! I wish he would gain some weight. At the moment he's maintaining and not losing...so that's good. I may start giving a teeny-tiny bit more Esbilac to se if it makes a difference. Don't want to over do it though. :animal-pa |

I, and many other breeders here, use goat's milk when hand feeding babies. It is very nutritious and digestible and is closer to Mother's milk than any commercial formula. I use a can of condensed goat's milk w/ equal parts water and add a little karo in for each feeding. The digestive system is very sensitive on the tiny babies and I think the goat's milk is a better choice for that reason alone, regardless of any problems with Esbilac's quality. Best of luck with Little Charlie. My, he is a tiny one. Probably your two biggest concerns at this time are keeping him warm and giving him a formula that will help him thrive. I highly recommend switching to goat's milk as many of us have had excellent results using it. |
:( Oh dear... I've been feeding something that will harm him?! :( |
Oh he is so cute!!!! I pray that he does good and makes it. He will be a fighter... Keep us posted! Best wishes!! |
Have you tried to squeeze some milk from momma and give it ti him? The biggest nipples near the vulva are the easiests to extract some milk from You can use a tiny medicine measure cup , mothers milk is very fattening and has all goodies for the little guy ! The other pups will have no problem sucking to produce more milk so you can get 1cc out of her every few hours to use to feed the little Charlie ! Blessings and keep up the good work ! Xoxo |

i thankfully have never had this problem with a puppy (touch wood) but as horrible as milking your dog sounds, i dont know why it hasnt been sugested before... when a human baby cant breast feed, but is still with the biological mother, what do nurses sugest? the mothers milk in a bottle, rather than formula! he may even take it better than formula- worth a shot at least! all the best, |
OK...new symptom...now the poor little thing is crying ALOT. I know he isn't too cold, the room they are in is warm, the other pups aren't crying and he's next to his Mom. I think he has gas colic. He seems to be urinating and defecating OK...just his tummy looks a tad swollen. Ideas? |

There is a product for babies with gas. It's called Mylicon but I'm not sure of the dosage for a tiny pup. You could try massaging his belly to help relieve it. Don't gauge his warmth by the other pups. They are much bigger and it won't be the same for your Charlie. Not saying he is cold, just don't go by the other pups for a reference. He should feel warm to the touch and should not be fed if he's the least bit chilled. |

Also , i did not suggest the milking before because on the first few days it is hard to do, the production of milk is not too great , but for now you may be able to milk her to feed him and you will have less problems ! Dont worry, this much work will all pay off in a few more days ... hang in there ! XOXO |
Thanks everyone for the tips. Yes, I have been gently wiping his bottom and genitals (cotton ball and warm water) before and after feeding...so have seen the 'results', so to speak. Right now they are a bit runny. I'm not relying on his Mom for cleaning him, as she is rather 'random' in her efforts. I did change Charlie's formula late this afternoon to the diluted goat's milk and added a few drops of Karo. Now I don't know if it's the goat's milk or just plain gassiness. Poor thing is still crying. I tired gently 'burping' him...haven't heard any bubbles yet...but will try again. I did read somewhere the 'human baby gas drops' (simethicone ?sp?) may help. I'm guessing this might this be similar to the Mylicon? Will check with the vet to see about it. I will see about milking his Mom. I swear, my human children were never this much trouble. :animal-pa |

Is this something you have personally done before? It sounds like the mechanics of it would be ineffective and sloppy. I suppose you could get some small amount recovered, but it wouldn't be enough for a feeding. If it were easy and practical, I would think there would be lots of info about it. While not disputing that Mother's milk is best, hand feeding a newborn is something that has to be done around the clock, every 2 hours. Due to that, I would recommend a tried and true method, which is what the goat's milk is. |
