Betty has our #s and isn't afraid to use them, so, I think it's safe to walk away from the computer. I do need a shower, I've got dogs coming in to get groomed.

When I read these posts, it makes me soooo very glad my pets are spayed and neutered.

Spoke to Betty a bit ago, Baby was in the midst of whelping puppy # 3. Betty's concern was with puppy #2. Seemed to be panting and tongue hanging out. I asked if she had any gauze and to use it clean out the pups mouth. Wrap the pup in a wash cloth and gently hold it her two hands, supporting the pups head and gently shake it down. The pup had cried, but without being there to really see what was going on. My guess was it's mouth needed to be cleared out and fluids brought up by the shake down. She said the puppy was breathing easier. Her worry was that the pup wouldn't make it. I calmed her nerves and gave her my standard talk of not all pups survive and though we do everything we can at times pups are just not well enough to survive. Her main concern right now was with her Baby Girl.

So far, so good.

Betty, Is on her way to the vet. She's very concerned with the 2nd puppy, to the point she can't focus. I had her check the pups hydration, and it is dehydrated. A sub-Q may help this pup survive, maybe not.

is she taking mom and babies in with her ?i hope there not being left home alone poor puppy 2 if he makes it will have to dub him/her miracle come on puppy 2 you literally have people around the world pulling for you! GOOD JOB GUYS!!

You guys are awesome! I'm way on the east coast in NC and I am on pins and needles hoping that everything is going to be ok for Baby Girl and her little ones. The comfort and support that you have given is priceless!

Yes, I recommended she gather them all up and take them with her. I asked to her call ahead to make sure there are no sick animals in the waiting room and that a sterilized examing room be available for her.

Thanks to Jim for his tenacity and making first phone contact with her. Baby Girl waited until this morning to deliver her first pup. All went text book with the first, but the 2nd one is having difficulty.

I am in full agreement with you. This world is full of mean, ruthless, and selfish people who care about noone but themselves. It is very refreshing to come here and find there are so many people (or should I say saints) that are willing to help a total stranger. Isn't it unusual for a pup to dehydrate right after being born? It couldn't be more than a couple hours since this baby was living in water. Could it be that this pup didn't get the pre-natal nutrition the others did?

I know Betty has a heating pad and I had her set it up last night. It's one of those that isn't adjustable and I have no idea how hot they get. I did tell her to not put the pups directly on the surface of it but to use a towel or something between the pad and pups.

It's so hard to know exactly what's going on when you're not there in person.

Will be checking back for an update....praying things go well in the meantime.

From my premature litter last August, I had one that dehydrated very fast. I sub-Q'd nothing worked, I lost the pup. It's my guess that with this long drawn out whelp the pup dehydrated during the whelping process. She mentioned a yellowish fluid in it's mouth and the tongue hanging out. From what she described, I don't think the pup was right.

That's sad to hear. Did she ever mention how many pups were expected or if Baby Girl seemed to be done?

She had Baby Girl x-rayed and it showed 4. She was working on the 3rd when I talked to her last.

I hope the stress of being taken to the vet doesn't cause Baby Girl to halt her labor. She had quite a time getting it going in the first place.

I know that with our first child, my wife got so upset with the staff at the hospital that she got dressed and stormed out....had me take her to a hospital 2 hours away. She was in full labor and it completely stopped. Amazing what stress and emotions can do to the body.

I sent her a pm also I live about 50 miles from her. If she is already at the vets office i hope the last puppy will be text book as well. Meanwhile i'll set here like the rest of you and wait for news...... praying everyone is healthy and safe.

I just got back to this thread. Mary and Jim and all who helped out ... great job.

Just a word of caution for those new to breeding, please don't rely on the experienced breeders always being around on this internet system. That would be not be wise.

I am so very happy that Mary was here and also Jim. Thanks so much for all that you do.

For those new to breeding, it is simply priceless to have a mentor present for your first whelp.

Keeping fingers and toes crossed for the mom and pups.

Me too. But, with Betty's inexperience I think it was the best place for her to be.

From talking to Betty this was an oops. Her only fault is taking advise from an inept vet.

I would add that relying on someone on the internet is never the way to go. It's so very hard to get a clear picture of what's going on without being there. It's not an ideal situation and is difficult to advise someone under those circumstances.

This is just one of those situations where the advice the OP had been given by her vet was poor and she was very unprepared. She simply didn't know just how much she needed to know. Another very good example of why a mentor is needed with these babies.

All would-be breeders can take a lesson from this. I know it can be difficult to understand how involved breeding Yorkshire Terriers can be. It is not the same as with other breeds, though preparedness and knowledge are important with breeding any dog. It is essential in the case of Yorkies and the lack of research, preparation and an experienced mentor can easily lead to tragedy.

Like all the others, I'm praying for a great outcome in this situation. I hope everyone pulls together and gives Betty the support she'll need in caring for these babies. No matter whose house they're in, they're all "our" Yorkies :).

Anxiously awaiting the outcome!! This is why I hardly ever have litters! I still get so nervous! Give me the show ring anytime over the whelping box!!!
