In other words, you buy your breeder first, then your puppy. If you don't feel comfortable and a bond with your breeder, walk away. I don't care how cute that puppy is, cause all puppies are adorable. You've got to know that your breeder is going to be there 7x24.

I don't know how many times I've heard well, my pups run free in the house, they sleep with me. Well that doesn't tell me anything about your breeding program. That really doesn't tell me if your a responsible breeder.

My thoughts are very simular---guarantee the puppies---testing does not always work or show what could be hidden for generations ! Guarantee your puppies !

My statement is only expanding and giving an insight to breeding. As in Liver Shunt, it can lay dormant for 9 generations, dogs testing clear of the disease. I have had people wait for puppies from me because they bought one 13 years ago and he is in such good health they wanted another one from me ! 13 YEARS and still healthy and happy--I'd say that isn't hurting the Breed in the least !! I think you have hit the nail on the head---trust your breeder--or walk away ! If the breeder doesn't talk and answer your questions--calm your concerns---WALK AWAY !!!!

Guranteeing is a good step in the right direction. But, testing is another big step. Not doing so, especially in yorkies is hiding one's head in the sand. There are so many people out there that aren't line breeding and haven't a clue in what is in their pedigrees. These people are under the misconception that by breeding this way they are less apt to have problems in the breeding stock. So, incorrect.

Similar but, not the same. I do believe in testing, it is the first step of being a good breeder.

Your vet should help you determine this. If it determined that it is, your breeder should be informed.

My feelings are this....sometimes it doesn't matter what "GOOD" lines you have in your pedigree, is it up front in the pedigree or is it 3 or more generations back? How does one know that just because you have a good pedigree way back in your dog doesn't have high bile acids unless you test? What about LP or LCP without testing? How does one know if that "good" pedigree didn't have Liver Shunt or the above health issues and was stopped but you happen to have that dog in your pedigree before it was discovered without testing? Liver shunt doesn't have a marker but it's nice to know when you breed a pair at least the dam and sire are clear...Just saying...
Testing is very important to be a reputable breeder besides just saying to guarantee...Testing is help in your breeding program and then that is where the guarantee comes if it's something were to crop up...Just saying...

but Mary my dogs do run the house and sleep with me LOL LOL...but I know you know my breeding program :)

I didn't want to say anything until I have more answers.....If there is no way to tell for sure then why bother. The breeder can always say *I* did something.....I was just curious in general if anyone knows if it is possible to pin point the cause......

For Kidneys there are a couple of genetic conditions that cause kidney disease - for the life of me right now I can't remember the correct names ... maybe glomulonephrosis? The vet should be able to help ascertain genetic/non genetic. Protein leaks into system

I think you understand what I mean. Pet buyers are so often taken in by the fact that the dogs are able to run the house, put in clothes, sleep in there bed, never put in a crate and that is all that is important to them. That's all the see. There's more to being a good breeder than meets the eye.

A vet can tell you if a kidney problem is genetic. As well as in other diseases.
