Help plz..2wk old Puppy with Diarrhea??????? Our puppies are two weeks old today. One, possibly two, have diarrhea. Mom had a Uterine infection and was on anitbiodics the past week. She finished them on Friday. She was only eating chicken and beef. She just started eating puppy soft and dry food yesterday. I also just started giving her beef Liver mixed in with her food. Could this be a reaction passed onto puppies? There are 4 puppies and I am positive of one having diarrhea (yellowish, light brown). I did the dehydration test and she seems ok. I am worried she might get worse. It is hard to tell if she is weak..they dont really move around a lot. My Vet isnt open for another 11 hours. Any suggestions as to what I can do for her or what other signs to look for? Thanks for any advice!! |
With puppies this young you need the vet..see one as soon a possible. If the mom is on antibotic's it can give pups bowel problems. I know what I would do, but I won't give medical advise with pups this young...take a puppy stool when you go to the vet for a qucik look see..best wishes.. |
?? She has been off antibiodics for 5 days. I was thinking back on what Mom was givin today. My Mother stayed over to watch them while I was at work and she fed her Beef Liver. She said she soaked dry puppy food in the water from the beef Liver and fed it to Momma 2 xs. Could this be why 2 of them have diarrhea? |
Possible..I have fed everything under the sun to a nursing bitch to get her to eat...never noticed it bothering the pups. Best to see the vet... |
? The Vet wasnt alarmed about diarrhea:confused:.. I guess because she is still gaining weight??? He didnt even want me to bring her in. He gave me probiotics for her... |

All my dogs and every foster I've had will/would get diarrhea from liver. I don't even bother with it anymore. I hope the puppies clear up real soon, but like everyone said, it's best to let the Vet. take care of them, but in my opinion, any Vet. that wouldn't be alarmed at two week old puppies getting diarrhea, I'd be looking for a different one. Puppies that young can expire quickly. |
? My concern is for the puppies and that was who I was talking about. She is better today. It is loose stools that a different one has now. Two are pooping on their own already. I still am giving the puppy the probiodic my Vet gave me. I think it may have been too much Liver for the Momma. I am keeping a close eye on them. They are all still growing and eating a lot. Thx for the info...I am not happy with my Vet for not seeing her(baby girl) |
Light colored stools can be a sign of giardia or coccidia. I would bring a fecal sample in just to be on the safe side. My vet charges less that $20 and I take a sample of all the puppies together. I figure, if one has it, they all would. I prefer to get a sample done rather than treat automatically like some people do.... |
I think few see puppy poop at two weeks...Moms are so good at cleaning. I would do as you were advised...take a sample for a look see at the vets...liver sure can give an adult bowel changes, just never noticed it causing a problem with the new borns..good luck |
I would check with the vet but I give mine benabac. I had one do it a few litter ago and did that and it worked. It was just really soft..not like water though.. If it is really loose I would find another vet to look at them. |
..19 days Of course my Vet finally decides after my last phone call that I should bring a sample of stool in. Of course it is the weekend and I couldnt get a sample before they closed saturday so now I have to wait til Monday. I started giving the probiotics diluted in a little water with a syringe. Ive noticed their stool is just loose now. I am still going to bring a sample in Monday to be on the safe side. All are active and well. Barking, playing and using the bathroom on they're own now..:D Thanks for the input |

? ok:) at what age do you introduce them to food? I know soft puppy food you have to put their paws in it first. What about water? How do I show them the shallow dish to drink out of and when do I start that? Mom is still feeding them but she has less patience. I tried trimming their nails but they are still sharp.. They are 19 days old today. Thanks Quote:
