how do you feed ? Ahia is not producing much milk, if any. I am trying to give them esbilac. they don't like it. they want nothing to do with a bottle. so i have tried using a medicine syrenge. Like i used to give antibiltics. should i just stick with forcing the bottle on them? or is the syrenge ok? what do you all do? |
wow I dont know I hope one of the breeders comes on and lets you know soon. |
I dont know this answer so im just bumping so the breeders can see it. IF not I guess you will need to call your vet. Please keep us posted. |
bump. |
Hi there, syringe feed is just fine, suppliment them about every two-three hours for the first couple weeks then you can take them to every 4 hours. Some prefer tube feeding, if the kids dont like the esbilac mix in a bit of goats milk, it has always worked for me. I think pat has a recipe she uses you may want to PM her for it. If your mom isnt producing milk start giving her some cottage cheese, goats milk, yogurt, cheese mixed with turkey or chicken, that should help her in making more, small meals 4-5 times a day. How old are the pups??? hope this helps |
thank you so much , i will try that. i have already been feeding them every 2 to 3 hrs as you have suggested. i will have my husband go get some goats milk pronto. |
I pretty much eat all day long. OH! You're talking about dogs!!!!!! :D |
:lol tears me too. yes, you are right. eat, pee, poop, comb hair and take pictures. it looks like a maturnity ward around here. i have taken a week off work and it is so much easier to work. LOL.. but thank you i needed a laugh. |
pups I hope I answered your question in your PM to me..I asked how old and now see they are just two days born. Sometimes I pick up a mommy and milk gushes out from the teets. Then there are some you can not squeeze a drop out of, but the pups get on and nurse just fine..the milk lets down as they nurse each time. If they pups are not crying, warm and happy, they are getting plenty. Teh fact they do not want any suppilemental milk from you is a good sign..that means they are no doubt nursing on mom. |
i've not run into this problem yet but this is good information. i've only had to hydrate pup by scringe in the past. |
What about giving her a shot of oxytocin from your vet. This sometimes helps the female to produce milk. I'm not sure if I spelled that correctly. Anyways I think it needs to be done very soon after delivery. Check with you vet if you still need help. |

she has gotten very protective today not wanting Buckeye even thinking about comming near them. so i have been keeping him out of the room. and ideas there? the vet (said i would not go back to this one, but did any way) gave her a couple of shots. one to shrink the uterus (is that what they call it on dogs?) and the other was an antibiotic. and has her on liquid antibiotic for a while just to keep infection away. she has a temp this evening of 102. yesterday it was normal. is that common? when they removed dew claws and cut tails we got home and i went to make sure they had peed and pooped and found that 2 of them had the tails stuck down. not allowing them to poop. i called the vet and they said that they had stitched and then applied a glue and to just pry the tails up. it was pretty easy to do to one of them but the other it was really painful and stuck pretty good. it took a while to loosen and is still a little sore. when they worked on the pups they took them away from Ahia for about 15 minutes. (they wanted me to leave them there so they could do them at a later time because they were backed up... i said no. i will wait). Ahia was so upset that she didnt have her pups and acted as tho they were not hers. when we got home she searched and searched for more pups or hers or something. i had a hard time getting her back in the pen with them. I am thinking it was a different scent on them. she just acted so confused. the vets assistant brought them back out to us and told Ahia to chill out when she wanted them back (she was very excited). and then proceeded to tell me how one was looking almost emaciated (sp). they were less than a day old. like i was not taking proper care of them or something. and said i had to pee and poop them because Ahia was not doing a good job of it and not to let her do it because of the stitch in the tail. (I couldn't pry the tail up much less pull out a stitch!). Ahia has been doing a very good job with them. she is making them pee and poop. and i do it too just to make sure. I am more at ease now! such a worry wort. I just get into a panic when things dont go according to the book. I can not express to you how much I have depended on this forum and how helpful it has been to me in every area of owning a yorkie. You read on here about much members love it here. i am here to tell you from the bottom of my heart and tears in my eyes "I REALLY DO LOVE IT HERE". Thank you so much!! |

Wow - sounds like you are having quite a time here. Poor Ahia and poor you. Docking tails & dew claws at one day of age is pretty early in my experience. We wait until they are at least 3-4 days old to give the pups a chance to bulk up alittle before such a trauma, even an extra day or two if a pup appears to not be triving well. I know you said something about finding a different vet......might not still be a bad idea. Kudos to the advice to relax and try and let the mother's milk come in, etc. We also supplement mom with tums antiacid (calcium supplement) although it is essential to wait until AFTER the birth of the pups so that her milk will come in first. Cottage cheese is another form of calcium supplement for her. Best of luck to you. Sounds like things have let up a bit. Good job. Tracy |
I am not a breeder and don't plan on it ever to confusing, but i keep reading that the Docking tails & dew claws are removed why do you do this and what the heck are dew claws, Is it really nessisary to do this. I no when you doc a rotties tail that is good because of the size of dog but little yorkies why. Please feel me in. I am a new yorkie/pom mom and nothing was done to her when i got her. What is the purpuse :) |
Dewclaws are the little thumb toenails that originate a little bit higher on the inside part of the leg. Dewclaw removal is most often performed in puppies around 3-5 days of age to comply with specific breed standards or to prevent the loosely attached dewclaw from catching on furniture, carpet, etc. resulting in damage to the toe. The docking of tails is a practice to avoid tail damage, for hygiene and other reasons. I had the vet only remove about 1/2 of my new puppies tails. that is what i told them to do but they removed more than 1/2. they like to remove more so you have to watch them. |
