Im sooo Upset, Smothered a Boy My Gezell smothered one of her baby boys only 4 days old. I tried everything to revive him. I cant stop crying feeling it is my fault, WHY did this happen? I am in here constantly checking on them. Why did this happen? What can I do to prevent it again? I am pulling them from under her at least 8xs a day. Now I am going to be so paranoid. Help with any solutions please!!! Heartbroken :-( |
oh no! I'm so sorry! I know some whelping boxes have pig rails to hopefully prevent this kind of thing..... |
I don't have any suggestions, I'm sorry. I'm sure it's not unheard off, just keep a better eye on them. Don't feel guilty just try to prevent it from happening again. |
there needs to be guard rails on your whelping box! that helps them when they happen to roll over on top of the puppies....so that their full weight doesn't smother them.... |
why She starts by feeding them sitting up til she is exhausted. They crawl under her and she lays down on them. It happened so fast... :-( He was warm to the touch when I found him..The ER vet is 20-25min away so it was useless. I feel so bad. Since this happened over an hour ago I pulled another one out from under her who was crying and couldnt breath. It was in the middle of the box. How can I seperate them every 2 hours between feedings without her going crazy? Heart-broken- |
i would not seperate them.it will stress out the mother.....and maybe even the puppies...and they can both go down fairly quick...you need to think of ways to build or create temp guardrails unless be by then 24/7..until they are old enough to move |

Please set up some guardrails like the others have suggested or just stay with her constantly. |

Make sure the bed is not thick with bedding..I use a made to measure clothe weewee pads...and I do not recall a mother not moving when she laid on a puppy...most cry and the mom moves fast.. I do know friends who have had pups smother in towels or blankets in the bedding... No advise, sorry...maybe I would take them away after feeding until they are about 2weeks and bigger... |
I am sorry you lost a puppy. I agree with Yorkie Rose that the bedding should not be real thick. I have never had a mom smother a pup either and my whelping boxes do not have rails. I use bottomless whelping boxes and I set the box on top of some sheets with a heating pad underneath. |
no She is 4 years old NOT 9 Quote:

devastated Gezell is 4 years old NOT 9. I am MOST DEFINETLY getting her fixed. I could not go through this again and i will not let Gezell go through this again. She still looks for him all over thinking Im hiding him..:-( Of course I will not leave her alone. I slept on the floor next to her and the box, well I slept 20min... I will do what I have to do to make sure the others are ok. She is still not eating even with Nutri-cal. We are both depressed. She leaves them often or just watches them cry. I had to bottle feed one time last night. I am taking her to Vet tomorrow hoping he can help her. Heart-Broken |
.. I do have a nice soft blanket in the box. I was told to keep it soft? I am taking them out right now. She feeds sitting up most of the time then she lays down when she looks completely exhausted and its on the pups. I have pulled them from under her several times. Maybe because she is not eating so she is exhausted and doesnt feel or hear them. idk..i just wish it was 3 weeks already! :-( Heart-Broken Quote:

First of all, I am sorry for your loss, try not to feel guilty about it, it is not your fault, sadly these things happen. How big is your whelping box, maybe your mama is having a hard time finding enough room to lay down without laying on one of her babies. I use a clear plastic tote, one of the ones that are designed to store stuff under the bed, they are high enough to keep the babies in and still have easy access for mama. The one I use is about 18 x 24 inches, it gives mama enough room to stretch out and still lots of room for the babes. I also like the clear plastic as you can see through it and see if a pup gets behind mama. I use a washable pee pad cut to fit for my bedding, nothing too thick or with too many layers for pups to get tangled in. These totes are big enough that I can put my heating pad under one side and leave the other side cooler for mama. Your pups will instinctively crawl to the heated side or to their mama. I would rather my box looks a little one the big side, than too small for everyone to be comfortable. |

I would be very concerned for the momma too. Something does not sound right. She should be eating like a horse. Have you taken her temperature today? Are you sure the pup was smothered? If the pup was already weak I can see how that could happen if the pup was unable to cry out. I have pups get behind the momma lots of times but they don't get smothered. Are all the pups latching? |
You do not need padding believe me...ever noticed howdogs are perfectlly comfortable laying on tile floors, concrete patio's etc....so onelayer pad in the whelping box is fine. She may not have felt the puppy in a soft blanket and it's face got buried...not your fault..lesson learned. Best wishes.. |
I would be concerned about her not eating as well. And when Zoe had her first litter and I was nervous about just about everything (not that I'm not still that way) I called the vet saying I think she has eclampsia and he told me to calm down and that if she did she would either be aggressive or at the least indifferent to the pups. I'm wondering if that is your problem? The fact that she's not eating and her calcium is probably being depleted.... Can you get her to take some nutrical? Maybe that will stimulate her appetite? Also, do you have any calsorb on hand? I would make her take a little bit of that... I'm so sorry, I can tell how worried you are and I know how I would be feeling in that situation. |
I am so sorry to hear you lost a pup. How big the box? you need to make sure the box is big so she has ton of space to turn around to feed her pups.I just had a litter of 5 days old pups. I checked on them constantly to make sure they are not under mommy ! Quote:

So sorry to hear about the loss of your little boy. |
Awww! I am so sorry for your loss. These little ones are so delicate. I'm afraid I won't ever take my eye's off of them. I'll be a nervous nilly! |
sad Yes, the box I keep Gezell and puppies in is an under the bed storgae bin. The plastic ones. It is big enough for her and pups. Since birth I basicly selpt on the floor in the room with them. Checking on them constantly. Day 3 I gave her more room to breath and take care of her babies while always chebcking on them. My biggest fear was smothering one. I was pulling pups from under her since day 1. I wasnt sure if i was just paranoid or she was laying on them. They crawl so far under her for warmth it makes me nervous. At day 4 she was leaving me alone in the room with them while she got her much needed breaks. When I found the puppy under her it was devastating. She kept trying to lick him to wake him up. The cpr I tried was too late. After I took him away she kept looking for him all over the room. The rest of the night she didnt want to be bothered by her puppies. I had to feed them 2xs during the night. Still today she doesnt eat very much. She is constantly leaving them alone to go lay down somewhere else. At least now she comes back to feed them and clean them. She just sits there and watches them cry. I brought her and puppies downstairs to a corner well hidden in the living room. She seems more relaxed and I get to sleep on the couch instead of the floor.:) I am not going to be able to sleep good until the puppies are walking around and big enough to get out from under her. I never want to go through losing a puppy like that again. Heart breaking and depressing. I am going to the vet today. oh and yes, i have givin her nutri cal but it is not working...she does like the puppy milk, just born so i try and put that on some food. it works for a few pieces and thats it... |
I am glad you are taking her to the vet.Still not eating after four days just doesn't seem right. Please update us when you get back. |
/ Unfortunately today is day 6. I will update after Vet Quote:

Infection Well thank God I took Gezell to Vet. She has a uterine infection. What else I tell ya. This is so stressful. Now I have to watch the puppies for 1 - 2 days to see if they get sick from it. I have to take her in everyday for 5 days for a shot. My poor baby lost 3lbs in 6 days. Im so happy she is ok and will be back to normal by tomorrow. She just ate some dry puppy food mixed with wet food..yaaay.. What an experience this has been. Never Again..I dont know how yo breeders do this! It is so emotional, at least what we have gone through. I just pray I have nothing but good news to write in the future.. |

I pray the puppies don't get sick. |
? I know..I was so scared when he mentioned possible surgery:eek:...another night of no sleep cs im gonna be worried about the puppies..but they are chunky and very healthy so Im hoping they will fight it. Quote:

Poor little Gezell, she has probably been feeling really awful for a few days and did not even know that she has been laying on her babies. I am sure that once she is feeling better, she will be a wonderful mother, most yorkies are. I am glad that the vet was able to figure out what the problem was but am so sorry you had to go through all this. |
so fast :) Unfortunately I had to cook dinner for the kids. It happened so fast. We checked on them 20min prior to finding him..:( I do not wish that on anyone. It is day 6 and I still havent had a good night sleep. Make sure you get plenty of rest before Labor begins....Good Luck to you!! Quote:
