I would be very concerned for the momma too. Something does not sound right. She should be eating like a horse. Have you taken her temperature today? Are you sure the pup was smothered? If the pup was already weak I can see how that could happen if the pup was unable to cry out. I have pups get behind the momma lots of times but they don't get smothered. Are all the pups latching? |
You do not need padding believe me...ever noticed howdogs are perfectlly comfortable laying on tile floors, concrete patio's etc....so onelayer pad in the whelping box is fine. She may not have felt the puppy in a soft blanket and it's face got buried...not your fault..lesson learned. Best wishes.. |
I would be concerned about her not eating as well. And when Zoe had her first litter and I was nervous about just about everything (not that I'm not still that way) I called the vet saying I think she has eclampsia and he told me to calm down and that if she did she would either be aggressive or at the least indifferent to the pups. I'm wondering if that is your problem? The fact that she's not eating and her calcium is probably being depleted.... Can you get her to take some nutrical? Maybe that will stimulate her appetite? Also, do you have any calsorb on hand? I would make her take a little bit of that... I'm so sorry, I can tell how worried you are and I know how I would be feeling in that situation. |
I am so sorry to hear you lost a pup. How big the box? you need to make sure the box is big so she has ton of space to turn around to feed her pups.I just had a litter of 5 days old pups. I checked on them constantly to make sure they are not under mommy ! Quote:

So sorry to hear about the loss of your little boy. |
Awww! I am so sorry for your loss. These little ones are so delicate. I'm afraid I won't ever take my eye's off of them. I'll be a nervous nilly! |
sad Yes, the box I keep Gezell and puppies in is an under the bed storgae bin. The plastic ones. It is big enough for her and pups. Since birth I basicly selpt on the floor in the room with them. Checking on them constantly. Day 3 I gave her more room to breath and take care of her babies while always chebcking on them. My biggest fear was smothering one. I was pulling pups from under her since day 1. I wasnt sure if i was just paranoid or she was laying on them. They crawl so far under her for warmth it makes me nervous. At day 4 she was leaving me alone in the room with them while she got her much needed breaks. When I found the puppy under her it was devastating. She kept trying to lick him to wake him up. The cpr I tried was too late. After I took him away she kept looking for him all over the room. The rest of the night she didnt want to be bothered by her puppies. I had to feed them 2xs during the night. Still today she doesnt eat very much. She is constantly leaving them alone to go lay down somewhere else. At least now she comes back to feed them and clean them. She just sits there and watches them cry. I brought her and puppies downstairs to a corner well hidden in the living room. She seems more relaxed and I get to sleep on the couch instead of the floor.:) I am not going to be able to sleep good until the puppies are walking around and big enough to get out from under her. I never want to go through losing a puppy like that again. Heart breaking and depressing. I am going to the vet today. oh and yes, i have givin her nutri cal but it is not working...she does like the puppy milk, just born so i try and put that on some food. it works for a few pieces and thats it... |
I am glad you are taking her to the vet.Still not eating after four days just doesn't seem right. Please update us when you get back. |
/ Unfortunately today is day 6. I will update after Vet Quote:

Infection Well thank God I took Gezell to Vet. She has a uterine infection. What else I tell ya. This is so stressful. Now I have to watch the puppies for 1 - 2 days to see if they get sick from it. I have to take her in everyday for 5 days for a shot. My poor baby lost 3lbs in 6 days. Im so happy she is ok and will be back to normal by tomorrow. She just ate some dry puppy food mixed with wet food..yaaay.. What an experience this has been. Never Again..I dont know how yo breeders do this! It is so emotional, at least what we have gone through. I just pray I have nothing but good news to write in the future.. |

Poor little Gezell, she has probably been feeling really awful for a few days and did not even know that she has been laying on her babies. I am sure that once she is feeling better, she will be a wonderful mother, most yorkies are. I am glad that the vet was able to figure out what the problem was but am so sorry you had to go through all this. |
so fast :) Unfortunately I had to cook dinner for the kids. It happened so fast. We checked on them 20min prior to finding him..:( I do not wish that on anyone. It is day 6 and I still havent had a good night sleep. Make sure you get plenty of rest before Labor begins....Good Luck to you!! Quote:
