7 puppies?!?!
 

Hello all. I am very happy to have just found this site. My Juliet is due to give birth around the 25th of this month....and I am a nervous wreck! Long story short, we rescued her from people down the street who just left her tied up outside all day long, and come to find out she was in heat. My male was never fixed due to $$...so here we are. (have since learned that the humane society will do it cheap...regardless)....last week on day 44, we had x-rays and from what we could make out, it looked like SEVEN pups! I was nervous enough, but now I am just a mess. My husband thinks I'm too worried, but these are my babies...just makes me nervous all the stuff online. Thankfully my vet is 5 mins up the road and 24/7, so if something is to go wrong, we're not far away. We go back on Tuesday for another xray to verify, since she said that 44 days may be just a little too soon.

Anyway....anyone every heard of a Yorkie having SEVEN?? I was happy with 2-3...but 7....I almost fainted! LOL Vet said that its not abnormal, but is unusual...and that most likely she will tire out sooner than we'd like. :(

Oh goodness! Sorry I don't have any advice to give, but I wish you the best of luck and hope all goes well! There are some great breeders on here that I'm sure would be able to lend some great advice!

Having 7 is rare, but it happens.....I personally know a very well known breeder that had 8....she dubbed the litter "Eight Is Enough". I don't know how big your girl is, but with the size of the litter, you'll be very busy and you'll have to keep a watchful eye. Tell your husband that no you aren't worrying too much.....Just gather up your supplies and prepare yourself for a roller coaster ride. And ask a lot of questions, supplies, signs, meds anything that you can fill your brain with. Hopefully you'll have an extra set of hands and or someone near by that is knowledgable.

Yes, he is already WELL aware that he will be coming home from work when she goes into labor! I'm praying for a weekend! LOL I was thinking of calling her "Sept-O-Mom" ...instead of Oct-O-Mom... :D

Juliet is/was 11lbs when I first took her to the vet, and last week she was just over 12, so she's not too big, not too small. But I am also very grateful that my vet is so close and 24/7.

Size of your girl didn't determine how many she concieved....she's just prolific.

Read everything you can about whelping.....she's gonna need help, yorkies aren't like larger breeds that do all the whelping on their own. During the whelp you'll have to make sure she doesn't poop out on you. Sometimes that is an issue with a large litter. They can deliver several of the pups just find, but not have the strength to deliver the last couple and require a C-section. After the litter is born, your main concern will be eclampsia....so, you'll have to make sure she is obtaining plenty of calcium supplements, but only after the litter is whelped, never before.

Don't hesitate to ask questions

Is there some kind of something that she can have during labor to help her with energy? Like the Nutramin or something similar?

I’ve had an eclamptic bitch once, and was able to keep it at bay for her final litter after the litter she was eclamptic with. I learned a LOT about eclampsia during that period. Here’s what I learned..

Oral Cal Plus
new product from revival, same as calsorb with out the nasty taste, does not make them vomit.

If you must give calsorb, put it on your finger, and rub in bitches mouth, gums, inside of mouth, underneath tongue, then follow with nutrical, don’t just squirt a blob in their mouth. Even if they throw up, it HAS absorbed (not 100%.. but a lot) because the bloodstream picks it up immediately through the mouth..it does not have to be digested to work. Give calsorb or Oral Cal Plus if bitch is exhibiting signs of eclampsia. Some signs are very subtle. My bitch would dig like crazy when I took her outside, then try to climb up the side of the wall of the house…that was her first sign she was going south for me.. and we’d treat with calsorb immediately. Anything “odd” should be taken as a sign…especially, panting, pacing, restless behavior etc… understanding of course that bitches pant after delivery anyways for a few days.

Okay to hold it at bay, so it never comes at all… forget everything about giving tums, cottage cheese, cheese, icecream.. etc. It’s useless. The body needs the calcium to be delivered with the correct ratio of Vit D and Phosphorus or it doesn’t absorb it, it’s useless. Pet Cal has this correct ratio. Another thing that has it is, believe it or not.. a scrambled whole egg! Of course everyone knows not to start calcium until the litter is whelped.. no giving it to PG bitches… I do give some calsorb during whelping If things slow down on a larger litter, but never before whelping. Make it a general practice to scramble your bitch an egg every day, and depending on weight, give ½ to a whole pet tab per day. I gave it to a 8 lb bitch ½ in the morning ½ at night…this is the “daily dose” for about a 20 lb dog who was NOT nursing a litter…so just fine for ½ the size, but nursing a litter. I would grind up the pet tab in the food processor and put the powder in the egg when I scrambled it.

Also, check your dog food for Soybeans, soy protein, or anything related to soy in any way. For SOME reason that is not completely understood by me (many menopause supplements contain soy, or are soy based, so this seems to be a contradiction).. soy protein can interfere with the absorption of calcium in dogs. If your food has soy of any sort, change to a food that does not for the duration of the weaning of the litter.

Her vet recheck was yesterday and it was reconfirmed...definitely 7 pups! I posted a pic of it. <sigh>

I have to say, I read your story (rescue/re-home of Juliet) and how the happy couple is now expecting 7, and it just made my day! You are so good for taking her in, not only giving her a good home, but uniting her with her soulmate...a "Romo and Juliet" love story meant to be, for sure ! :) And the pics are just adorable!! Awe! You made me all teary-eyed! Thank you! It really was awful having to see her tied up everyday...and to KNOW her now and how just sweet and loving she is, it breaks my heart....BUT, now she couldn't be more spoiled! Of course, I feel terrible, b/c I can see that she is CLEARLY over being pregnant (don't we all feel that way in the end?)...but it doesn't stop her from loving on us. I think we're all ready for this to be done, and on to the next step...BABIES!! :)

Aww! My babies are due April 24th-April 28th (59-63 days), wouldnt it be cool if they were born on the same day?! 7 puppies! I think mines having 2 or 3! 7 puppies IS unusual, but it doesnt mean it is bad. Just hope no more puppies were hiding behind those 7 in the x-ray!
