No breeders or vets recommend Lepto now..took years to change it..and it does depend on your area..but most do not give corona any longer. Lots of canine flu here.. parvo can flair at times..best to be up to date on area problems and where your pups will live. What I do for my adults is totally different then pups..infact I do not give annual vaccine to adults over 2..haven't in 20 yrs. I do give parvo if there is a flair up and I am showing...but that is very infrequently. More Yorkies have problems with flu, parvo and bordatella then distemper, hepetitis etc...Best wishes in whatever you decide. |
I gave my own shots with my first litter. My vet does it now. He says they see many more dogs with parvo that were given shots by the breeder. I purchased a puppy that the breeder gave the shot to and the vet insisted he give the shots again. He does not charge a office visit if you have the shots done by him so I know he is not saying this just to make money. |

to my adult yorkies yes..i usually get the 5 way for the puppies |
I see vets with vaccine programs...no office visit charge, discount for litters and a discount for entire series..of course, there are vets who take advantage money-wise...but I see so many really trying to cut costs... Unless I knew the breeder very well... I would not buy a puppy given shots by the breeder..some are too hit or miss for me. Never thought I would say that..but a parvo outbreak last year proved to me many breeders have no clue what and when is necessary...the vet had dogs in the clinic with breeder shot records saying they had received parvo vaccines..and they had parvo... My recent litter pick came from a long time breeder...I noticed the vet gave the shots...surprised me. |

Here's what I do and recommend: I take a collective stool sample prior to deworming.....I never deworm if not necessary. I do my own puppy shots: 1. I order them through Revivalanimal.com Vangaurd Plus 5 (order them before March 30th. Revival will have to reup their contract with them and the prices will increase by 40%. I spoke to their vet supply specialist and these vaccinations will have an expiration of 2011. Living in California and I assume you have litters of yorkies....Cornona, Lypto and Lyme are not needed or recommended. 2. I order the Intra III for Kennel Cough 3. Syringes are Monjet Luer Lock 3ML 25 x 5/8 A box of a hundred is less than $10.00 for a box of 100. I use them for everything from administering meds orally, vaccinations, Sub-Q, administering POP shots supplementing puppies. Remember vaccinating your pup against Parva does not guarantee your pup will not contract the dreaded disease. That bit of information came from my vet. |
Please do not think I am against breeders giving shots...did it for years. I would trust many YT breeders..I would not trust the average breeder I meet here in my area... |

I know that when I order mine, I ask for overnight delivery and extra ice....never order in the summer, even with overnight delivery........ I strongly suggest that you order them via phone to make sure you ask for expiration dates..... |
I questioned a breeder about using a vial that was 3 months expired..she said, and I quote.."vaccines are good for 6 months past the date"...learn something everyday...LOL |

Interesting convo. Some vets do refuse breeder administered vaccines and I really do think their reasoning is valid. They just have no way of knowing if they were shipped, store, or given properly. Many people also get their vaccines from farm stores that tend to carry the ones from companies that aren't as good as Merial, Pfizer, etc. That's not to say that I think breeders should never do it. It just takes a lot of studying to make sure everything is right and the ability to dwal with a reaction should one arise or get to an ER very quickly. And the chances of overvaccination for these pups are slightly higher because vets may redo them... Also, I'm pretty sure that a breeder wouldn't be able to buy the recombinant distemper by Merial which is looking very promising... |
How do you find out what vaccines are really needed in your area? |

you know what? i do my own but i dont think i trust anyone else who does..lol i trust my self but other people that i dont really know...then i dont trust them..except for my vet i love dr taylor and so does my puppies!! :) |

Corona, Lept, Lime and Giardai vaccines are very detrimental to yorkies. So, unless there is an outbreak of these diseases in your area, I wouldn't recommend them. |

I guess I should've asked "Tammy - why, specifically are you giving Lepto (just curious)?" |

with my adults dogs its never been an issue...i gave it to puppies once before and it wasnt an issue...ive grown up using the 7 way in all our dogs...no specific reason other than thats what we use... puppies i typically use the 5 way but i have used the 7 way and never saw a lick of change |
