I wonder if perhaps we are trying to rush her too much. It takes time to work the puppy through the birth canal. Without us actually seeing the momma it is hard to tell if she has actually in hard labor. Pushing hard is to be expected as the pup works its way through the birth canal and that can go on for a couple of hours. Hard labor is once the pup get into the birth canal and the momma is pushing and straining almost continuously. Once you start feeling the pup bulging, then it could take an hour. All females are different, a lot depends on their size.

Absolutely not, She's been pushing hard for over an hour, her girl is shivering......I don't think I'd be willing to change my opinion on taking her girl in.

No it isn't after you feel the pup bulging. It's heavy strong contractions for an hour. The puppy maybe having issues; stuck higher up....Sorry I don't agree with you.

This morning's puppies, puppies never made it down that far, mother went eclamptic.

good luck hun...its scary...i cried so much seeing him run to the OR with her...but im glad i took her. my gut was telling me to go when i saw her like that...it was worse than what she was doing the past few days...jut limp and shaking and then she got stiff

It just sounded to me like the contractions were still not that close. You and I have lots of experience in delivering and we know what a hard contraction is, someone without experience might consider just normal labor, hard labor. There is a big difference. I just don't fell comfortable telling someone that is unknowledgeable to feather their bitch. You can stop the labor if you keep interfering too much. Perhaps the OP should get her to the vet if she has any doubt. I pray this has a good outcome.

I agree completly, if I don't have the dog in front of me I can't judge the buldging or the intesity of the contractions, that is why I rather be safe than sorry when advising online. I am a very level headed person when it comes to emergencies, that is why my mentors love me, even with my own dogs, and with my son being in the veterinary med. field I had learned tons, but is extremely difficult when you have an inexperience person telling you what they see. I love helping but sometimes I feel that I rush to run to the vet because in the back of my head I am thinking what if I am wrong.. is not the same when the dog is in front of me and I can determine on my own judgement.

Feathering a bitch is nothing, they can do no harm on the contrary, it can do nothing but good. Yes, you are much better off not interferring and allowing her to proceed without help. But, at times just a bit of interferring can get things rolling.

What you stated was maybe we were going to fast and should wait it out and not get to the vet so fast. I for one would never take someone elses bitch's life in my hands and would rather err on the side of caution, it's gone way to long and it's time to get her to the vet, if that hasn't already happened.

I never said she should not take her to the vet. I don't know if she needed to go or not. That is up to her to make that call. I was just making an observation that is sounded to me like she still needed a little more time to work the pups down. You are absolutely right, it is better to get her to the vet if in doubt. The OP posted right before I did that she was on her way to the vets, I hope that is where she is.

I agree with Mardelin, one hour of hard pushing is my limit. Mom ends up getting too worn out and puppies end up in trouble. One hour and I am in the car to the vet.
