Taking Temps
 
What do you guys think about this? Does it really work, or at least work well enough to bother with it. I've read in several post about it stressing the mother out, so in the end is it worth it?

If it is, should you start at day 57, or wait longer, I've read different opinions on this too.

When I first started out, I was dilligent about taking temps. However, my first whelp her temp never went down. All I did was upset her, taking her temp 3 times a day. As the temp has to remain down for 24 hours, giving you a good indication that whelping time is upon you. My feeling is, that it will happen when it happens.......somewhere between day 58 of your first breeding and day 63 of your last. In your case I know you don't know when that happened, since your girl came to you with pups.......

Do you count the day of the first breeding as day 1 or do you start counting after?

If you bred a female on January 1 Date due to Whelp would be March 5th so, you would count the day after as day 1. Keeping in mind that the day she was bred may not be the day she concieved. Her eggs break down if not ferilized within forty-eight hours. The male sperm life up to seven days.

Revivalanimal.com offers a breeding circle giveing you breeding dates vs whelping dates.

I take temps and I am religious about it. It does not stress my girls out at all, since I am very close with my babies and they trust me 100%. I am gentle and my vet taught me the proper way.

Out of the litters I have had over the years, only 1 girl did her temp not drop right before whelping. So I always feel more comfortable still taking the temps. I have been starting at day 58. When I first started breeding, I remember my vet had me start at 2 weeks before her due date, just to see her pattern, but now I start much later. :)

I used to be a believer in taking the temps, I would do it twice a day but then I had a couple of females go into labor when their temperature was around 100 so I decided it just is not accurate enough to go by the temperature itself. There are times I will take the temperature, more out of curiosity but I don't like to overdo it. I do recommend keeping an eye on the temperature when the momma is not eating well. I have heard of females that have had the pups die right before birth and the female would get a uterus infection.

I do nothing to bring on premature labor. Whether or not the girls show outward stress is not an indication of what goes on inside of her, when she is being handled. That's why I always wait until day 58 to give her a medicated bath and shave her belly, nails filed.
My girls also know that I would never hurt them. After spending the first year or two of their lives exclusively with being trained and Championed by me, one could not have a greater trust with one another.

I feel that the less stressed I am, the less stressed my girl will be. So if it gives me peace of mind to take her temp, I do it.

Thanks for the input. Going from the Oct. 3rd ( the day they noticed she had locked with their other dog) tomorrow would be day 58, but who knows how many times it happened that they didn't notice :mad:, or if it could've taken 7 days for her to conceive she would be day 51 (right???) so I think I'm just going to leave her be, and watch for other signs in the next week.

Just to be on the safe side I will give her the medicated bath, and file her nails down tomorrow.

On another note, she was laying on my lap today and I was rubbing her tummy, and I could feel the puppies moving around really really strong:p it was too cool, before I wasn't really sure if it was pups or gas lol, but today I knew for sure

Usually the puppies are born within a week of feeling them move... so that may be right at your calculated date.

I know the emotional ride you've been on with your girl. You've been watching her and getting to know her. So, I think when she starts acting a bit different, you'll know it's time.

I never did bother with the temp thing. I figured I was home anyway so why go through that....I could tell in the early morning that she was getting ready and it would happen soon. She had them by 11 that night. The only time I took her temp was after 24 hours before I gave her clean-out tea.

i do a base reading about day 58, then I don't do it again until day 60, when I take it twice a day in the morning and at night, as soon as she droped to 99.3 I knew it was close, my two girls have been like clock work with the temp thing.

Have a question for you. My darling Sassy is 65 day by her first breeding and 63 by her second breeding. Her temp has been 99.2 for 5 days and pups have been moving like crazy. Today she felt a bit warm so I took her temp, now 100.2 and she ate alittle dinner. Should that concern me!! She is not pushing or anything Im just a worried mom I guess. I work tommarow and I am afraid to go to work. Dave will be here with her but I trust myself with her no one else. Thats bad huh.(LOL) Any thoughts on this.

She may go tonight......Some girl's temps rise just as they start to whelp. Somehow I think you'd better schedule some days off.

a spike in temp and then a drop to 98's is normal and labor should start withing 24 hrs of the spike and drop.keep a close eye on her now, she should be starting labor very soon.. up to 67 days is a normal count.i don't panic until day 67.

I don't think exciting is the word for it....more like nerve racking....you'll be running around like a keystone cop. Try and remain calm, for your girls sake. I don't know if you'll have time for the computer. I usually just sit and watch, until I see that first bubble, then the hands get disinfected and all the instruments go into the alcohol for sterilization.....then it gets busy......

I agree with this. I use to take the temps for a week leading up to the due date. And yes..some times..a bitches temp would indeed fall to 98 degree's 12 to 24 hours before labor started. However, many times...there was no temp change at all.

I look for more definite signs...like hiding under the furniture, throwing up, shaking, squating to pee every few minutes from the pressure, nesting and panting. These signs tell me more then the thermometer ever did.

You're right on the nerve racking part. But, if I have any questions, I didn't want to have to run downstairs, so now I can talk to you guys and still be in the room with her;)

absolutely beautiful... just wait until after whelping i should had taken a picture of my perfectly organized stuff, and then after, it looked like a hurricane came and pass right thru the stuff...lol, best of luck with her whelping, by the way love the box..

Thank you Carmen! I'm sure it will look sooo different afterwards. She's getting ready for her bath now, the shampoo I originally ordered was out of stock, so I substituted Vet Solution Universal Medicated Shampoo.

The whelping table has her hemostats, surgical scissors, Pet Cal tabs, nursing bottle kit, feeding tube & syringe, Goats Milk powder stethoscope, rubbing alcohol, alcohol pads, iodine, cotton balls, hand sanitizer, nasal aspirator, baby wipes, wash clothes, rags, thermometer, floss, nutri drops, oral cal, bene bac, scale, weight charts, ribbon, clotisol, baby nail clippers, a heating pad that covers 1/2 the box, a seperate box with flannel blankets cut up . . . I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things but thats most of it : ) and she has all of the ingredients for the post whelping drink and whelping pudding ( Thanks Mary!)
I have a tv, a chair, a computer, energy drinks ( I need my own nutri drops right? lol), tylenol ( I get stress headaches) and you guys!
Is there anything really important I'm missing?

holy cow girl you have all i have and some...:D Ky Jelly, you must have it..
is a personal lubricant in case you get a stuck in the middle baby.. i always have it on hand.. besides that I think you are all prepared.. I also had my laptop setup in the whelping room, as a matter of fact I am sitting in the room with mama and the babies right now..LOL

The vet solutions medicated shampoo is wonderful.......

You are a woman after my own heart. For someone that got this little girl already pregnant you are some contientious breeder........

Surgical gloves....you may have to glove up and lubericate your finger for feathering and or dilation.

Youi may want to ask your vet to supply you with dextrose and small syringes.

Oh do you have preemie nipples and syringes for administering meds.
