I just re-read these posts. It's sad to see these posts. If a bitch appears skinny or not it's no indication of anything. Not answering the question about the size of the puppy or her temp. The time it takes in-between puppies. I know of many that appear pretty slim all the way through pregnancy! Then the post about not knowing to suction fluids. UGGGG. Her weighing 4 lbs & no xray~ All signs of not being ready to breed. A breeder must know these things before a bitch is pregnant. There are many other things that can arise. These are the simple things. Some of whelping is difficult.

I'm sorry she lost the puppies. But a good breeder would have gone to the vet. PERIOD. She is too small to breed. The puppies died and who knows how long she was in labor. This hurts me to hear these stories.

It's important to know that next time you may not be as lucky.
A good breeder doesn't breed a 4 lb yorkie willy nilly. A c-section can happen at any weight, at that size you have to expect it. A good breeder would have taken her to the vet to even see how big the puppies were.

I'm sorry you lost the puppies. I'm sure you are sad too. I hope you will use this as a learning experience. A good breeder will take a bitch to the vet before they breed them and after they think they are pregnant. I don't understand why you didn't take her to the vet. But I hope that you will learn from this. I'm so glad that she didn't die in labor!!!!!!!

I really hope that you will stay on yorkietalk. Use it as a place to learn. It will help you learn things about the breed. Everyone has to start someplace. It's dangerous to breed this breed without a mentor and a vet that you have on call. If you have a mentor they can guide you. Everyone starts someplace. Some people get lucky, they have a great mentor that they get their first puppy from. For some it's a tough road. I hope that you will use this as a one time experience as something that you learn from. There are lots of great breeders in Canada. Even though a mentor doesn't have to be close it helps. But please stick around. I think you will enjoy what you learn.

:thumbup: Good post, but unfortunately, now that both the pups have passed, I doubt they will be back on to just "learn." They haven't been back on since their last post. I too am surprised the 4 lbs mom did not die, esp with NO vet care!

Did you whelp her on her first heat? You need to wait till the third heat to start breeding? Also how old is she?

Wow you guys jump fast. Just to let you know that Ruby is doing good, a little clingy, but good. I was in contact with my vet, before, during and after the birth. I'm not that much of an idiot. And oh yeah, I plan on sticking around, love the sight.

We did not call you an idiot. but why did you not get the xrays at least? Do you not know how lucky you are to not lose your mommy?

It sounds as if your veterinarian didn't exactly prepare you for anything you encountered. So, be honest here, did you REALLY take her to the vet??? Did your vet really not express concern over the size of your bitch? Did your vet not insist that an x-ray be taken to check sizes of the puppies and the number she was having, considering her size? Did the vet not explain the ins and outs of whelping, especially since this was your first time whelping a litter? Was your vet not on call for emergencies? Any good vet, would have done EVERYTHING to make sure you were ready for this. Though I was pretty confident in whelping my first litter (just recently, too), my vet went over every minute detail to make sure I was ready. Either you are just saying you went to the vet to avoid harsh criticism from us on YT, or you just need to get another vet. It doesn't sound as though this "vet" of yours did what they could to ensure the safety of your dog and her puppies. Sorry if this offends you at all, but it needed to be said. Harsh, but true.

Let me add one thing, you say your vet was with you during labor (or at least in contact with you). If that was so, then why were you asking questions to us on YT? Why not ask your "vet"? Hmmmm

im sorrry about your puppies its really sad dont get offended by the people hear on yorkie talk they love and care about dogs everyones dog and sometimes they can get harsh in trying to teach a lession but they mean nothing but good i promise

Dang, I am new to this site and just reading the bashing some of you gave this poor girl is not an impressive start. Calling her irresponsible and basically calling her a liar?? Who are you people? I thought this was a place for support and advice and sharing.

Sweetie, first please realize this is an older posting...there are tons of other threads where you'll see that there are tons of loving and caring posts. Please, know just like families, everyone is different and something that one person might say another wouldn't dare. I think the main idea that they were trying to express was that they are very concerned over the mother dog. 4 lbs is very small to be breed. Please, look around more before you make such conclussions of us all. If it this was a hateful place we wouldn't have so many members. It really is a wonderful and caring place. I urge you to look around more please.

I heard the concern for Ruby and the puppies in those posts, but the tone was so very harsh. Certainly there is a lesson for everyone in the thread, but when feeling anxious and afraid and in the middle of that situation it doesn't make for a very good "teachable moment". Many suggested that she have a mentor to help her through the process, and I was wondering if one or more experienced breeders PM'd her offering to mentor her or answer questions that might have come up in retrospect? Might take some of the sting out of the bite.

This is not that old of a post. what a few weeks.
And yes, there are a lot of caring concerned people on here who are very helpful during a time of crisis. I know I Have found this place to be a lifesaver many times. I think the tone of this post was a little harsh. I hope that everyone who comes here to seek help will find is as welcoming as I did, not so critizing after the fact.

I promise I am not judging all by a few that I completely disagree with their comments. In retrospect, I am sure CD wished she had been more prepared but some no matter how prepared panic in the heat of the moment, especially if it is their first time. I am more than sure the majority of us here are not "experienced" breeders and we all make mistakes. It does not mean we do not love our Yorkie's more than life!! We would never purposely put them in harms way.

On a good note, my Princess Jersie had her first litter on Monday! (Pearl Harbor Day!) We successfully gave birth to 5 beautiful, healthy babies! Proud moment for me? 3rd puppy was not breathing when she was born. Jersie tried everything possible and nothing. I jumped into Momma mode and after seeing it done on TV, began giving the puppy mouth to mouth. Not even 30 seconds later the baby was breathing and I handed her back to Momma to finish what I had started! Baby number 3 is my special Angel and I named her Arizona. (Remeber Pearl Harbor) All babies are beautiful and healthy and Jersie is the best Momma EVER! (I'm prejudice of course)

She needed to go to the vets office and did not go. Do you have any idea how painful that is to sit here and know babies are dying b/c someone bred two yorkies that doesn't even know to suction their mouths?:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I was online with the girl as it was happening. I lost sleep. I've cried and cried over the babies drying for no sensible reason. I have been extremely kind about it. I can assure you if you went through the same events you would feel the same. The bitch is too small. A vet wasn't on board, the lady needs education.

I agree. The OP still has not been back on after being asked if the momma had really been to the vet. The Op said they were in contact with vet before, during, and after, but was online instead? I don't think they really saw a vet. If they did, that has got to be one of the worst vets ever.
