Looking for tail docking tips
 
I have watched the video and been reading up on it here. I feel pretty good about doing it. I am going to do it on day 4.

Any tips that you could share with me?

Why??? I just wondered cause it was only $30.00 for Tristan and his two sisters to get theirs done with the dew claws removed as well....They did bleed and had to have a stitch in each one of their tails.... I just think leave it to the pros. I couldn't do it!!

I totally don't blame her - it's not about the money. Do you know how much you're exposing those new babies to in a vets office? That's why I'd like to learn how to do it myself...

I agree. If I had the guts to do it at home I totally would. I'm not there yet tho. I'd rather not take my babies (should they ever arrive) out so early either. This time I will though.

I really considered doing this as well (sorry, I don't have any tips for you), but just couldn't. I would've done the hemostat clamp and twist method as well; i've just heard better things about it- less painful, less bleeding. Do you have some quick stop powder on hand? Are you also planning to remove the dewclaws yourself? If you're planning on taking them to the vet for dewclaw removal, you may as well let them dock the tails as well (it's not expensive to do). Honestly, I think it'd probably be best to see it done firsthand before attempting this for the first time; videos always make things look so easy. But if this is what you're going to do, then good luck to you. Hopefully there will be many who can give you excellent advice. ;)

Missy, when you put the clamp on wait a few seconds and then hold the pup with one hand at the base of the tail (rump) and twist as fast you can with the other hand. Twist AND PULL at the same time. Wait another second or two and put the mama back with mama. it stops crying immediately when you do that. It will un nerve you the first time because the do cry and try to scoot away when you clamp them. I have never had to use quick stop or anything on the tails. there is usually no blood.

I helped a friend of mine and let me tell you is not for the faint of heart, but is no blood with the clamp twist method, she also used a product called Clotisol and it was absolutely no blood. I am using the same method with my silkies and she will be assisting me this time. it did helped a lot to be the one holding the baby while she did the clamping and twisting it give me a good sense of what I have to do. and I feel very good having an experience person there in case of any emergency..

Well you have a cheap vet. My last single was $110. They consider it surgery. My vet cuts and stiches also and I think the clamp is a better way.

If this is something I can do at home I would rather do it than expose them to all the other animals in the vet office. Not to mention taking them in and out of the cold air.

yes my vet considers it surgery too.. also they do the cut and stich method and I don't want that. :eek: My Prada was done with the clamp and twist method and is no scar on her sweet knob..LOL I talked to her breeder this morning too.. can you tell I am home, usually I am at the doll store but I decided not to open today so I am calling and asking all the last minute questions to everyone..:p

I have been docking my own puppy's tails for years. I have never used the clamp method. I just use sharp scissors, it is quick and easy. I put on some Clotisol as soon as I cut the tail and there is no bleeding. I use cuticle scissor for the dewclaws. Getting the right length can be tricky. When I first started docking tails I would cut where the brown meets the black on the underside of the tail. While that is okay for pet yorkies, for show yorkies it needs to be longer than that. I am still not positive how how long a show yorkie's tail should be. I see some in the ring that look pretty long. It is much better to have the tail too long than too short.

Also, I think I read where someone else said that when you make the cut you should have the tail in the upward position. It has something to do with the tail muscle and getting the correct tail carriage. Good luck to you.

The tails where a piece of cake. I would do it again. The dewclaws I freaked out... I don't know how much bleeding is normal. I have 1 done but didn't do the other 2... I think I will try again later on.

Do you have Clotisol? I normally have no bleeding with the dewclaws. I snip them off at the base with the cuticle scissors, then apply a dab of Clotisol. There is normally not bleeding. I do the dewclaws first on the pup since that hurts the least, then I do the tail.

Yeah I have clotisol powder. I had a few drops of blood. Maybe I was cutting to much.

The Clotisol I use is a liquid. I hated it when I used powders, they don't work near as good. What did you use to cut the dewclaws? How do the tail look? Would love to see pictures of them when you get a chance. I will have to do my new litter on Monday.

I used cuticle scissors. I think the tails look great. I went a little longer than the brown. I like a little longer tail but after I got done I thought maybe it should have been a little longer. It is so hard to judge it with them so tiny.

If you used the clamp and twist method, the part you clamped will fall off in a few days so the tail will actually be a tad bit shorter. I always cut it where the tail starts to narrow and I really like the length it gives them. I think it is better to be on the longer side than too short.

About 1/4 inch past the gold (into the black). I think a little longer is better than shorter...

I am going to try the docking and dew claws, when is the best day to do them? the third or the fourth day? I know that the clothing on their blood kicks in on the third so is safe to do it then? what day did you do yours?

I prefer doing tail on the 4th day if they are all at a good size and weight. Sometimes with tiny pups you can to wait up to 7 days.
