Sophie had her babies on Oct 25 .She has six 2 girls 4 boys.

Anyhow the reason why I am posted is because of the runt he weighed 2.4 ounces. He is not doing well he sounded congested. I took him to the dr to see what he thought. The Vet gave him a shot and now he is on antibiotic's.
I bottle and Sophie nurses him and he now is 3.0 ounces.

I thought he would be getting better by now. He looks like he is struggling to breath. I am checking on him like crazy because I am afraid of him passing away.

The rest of the puppies have doubled their weight and are doing awesome and wondering why and how long my runt will struggle.

Is there a reason your bottle feeding? I would keep this pup feeding off mom only and make sure the others are not pushing it off the tit.
when you bottle does milk come out of his nose? The milk should drip out slowly when the bottle is held upside down. If it runs out the pup could choke or aspirate (breath in) the milk. do not hold pup laying on its back and let it feed from bottle, make sure its always on its tummy. and never feed a cold pup.
did you vet check the pup for a cleft palate? I would also be giving this baby nutri drops. what did the vet say about it?

YorkieShadow 11-05-2009 08:43 PM

I just noticed the picture. boy it is little compared to its litter mates. I would watch close each feeding making sure it gets its share and not get pushed out by the others.dose he latch on good? funny how they are all Yorkie colors and none turned out looking like her. their very cute shes adorable too.

katelin 11-05-2009 08:46 PM

I agree. With my tiny one I gave Nutri-Drops every 4 hours (just a little drop on the tongue), then put that puppy on the back nipples where the most milk is. Let the tiny one nurse as long as it will before putting the other puppies back in with the mom. I also gave a dose of Benebac, which seemed to help as well.

I'm sure you are worried. Good luck.

I am doing both because if Sophie is feeding the other puppies the runt gets pushed off. I bring Sophie out of her box and let her be alone with the runt. Milk has came out his nose but not that often. My vet said no cleft palate. I wished I knew about not feeding a cold puppy on the first few days I can't help to think that is why is sick? I will call the vet and ask about the drops in the morning.

ANY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED

katelin 11-05-2009 08:54 PM

Is the puppy warm now?

If not, you can gradually warm it with a heating pad with a towel or blanket wrapped around it. It must be done gradually though, and they can become dehydrated if they get too warm. Once you know the puppy is warm, try nursing again.

I would set my alarm and check the puppy every 2 hours to make sure it is warm and to let it latch on to one of the back nipples. Take those little fatties off the back nipples and protect the space for this little puppy or remove the other puppies to a warming box until you are sure this tiny one has eaten as much as it can.

Is the puppy's tummy full and round, or is it flat and skinny?

Like katelin said the the smallest eat first put it on the back tit thats fullest. then when its full let the others eat. the mothers milk will be better for it as long as it can latch on and you wont have to worry about it breathing milk in and choking that can lead to a raspy baby and can lead to pneumonia and possible death. yes never feed a cold baby always warm it first. and never bottle feed with it laying on its back. also you must burp by rubbing its back after each bottle feeding, but I wouldn't even bottle feed as long as it can latch on to momma.

Daddy was a full blood yorkie and Sophie is yorkiepoo. I have posted photos of her as a baby and the daddy also.

For the record for all that do this all the time my hats are off to you. This was my fast and it will be my last. This has been too emotional.

YorkieShadow 11-05-2009 09:03 PM

Newborn puppies are not yet able to regulate their own body temperatures and feeding a cold puppy will do more harm than good as they can not digest it when cold. Keep puppy on a heating pad covered by a towel. I prefer Lectro pads. The puppy's temperature should be around 97 degrees. Never feed a puppy who is 94 degrees or lower.warm them up first.

Yes now he is warm we set up a heat lamp but the first few days we did not know this. I am waking up every 2 hours and making sure he is fed. And yes the runts tummy is fat. This is just in the last few days. He is peeing alot. Just another ? How much should he poop?

yes I gussed the daddy was full Yorkie cause of the babies looking like him, but I can also see the Yorkie in Sophies face.

did the vet hear that he was congested? what did he say about that. I think the best right now is to keep it warm and make sure its getting full from momma only, and let it eat first.

Waytoomuch 11-05-2009 09:09 PM

Can his antibiotics cause constipation ?

why do you think its constipated? is it crying or is its tummy really hard? I don't know if the antibiotics cause constipation or not. but do know the mommy cleans them up pretty fast so its easy to miss. I would keep a good eye on it and if you don't think its going to poo Id call the vet. you can also
stimulate the pup Take a cloth with warm water and rub the area thoroughly right after it feeds. but momma dog normally does this by licking them.

I think I am over thinking his heath because I think he is sick because I did not know about the heat issue. I love this little guy and want him to do well. The other puppies are getting so big and doing so well. I wish he did not have it so hard.

YorkieShadow 11-05-2009 09:33 PM

yes it is pretty scary when one gets weak and sick. but you are doing what you can, you did take him to the vet . give it time for the shot antibiotic's to kick in. just make sure he stays warm and gets his feeding from his mom. and get him some nutri drops they will help him out a lot. and just keep checking on him often.
and be very careful with that heat lamp. I don't care much for those I like the heating pad on low better.

Little ones can be so touchy and so durable at the same time.
I have a litter 3 weeks with one runt she is only 9 ounces .
I had to get up every couple of hours clear the path for her to nurse I always put her on the back teats and wait till the milk let down and she got a good meal.
Now she is doing well and can fend for herself.

What antibiotics did your vet put the pup on ( Amoxi)? A Shot should take 24 hrs to start to work.
A light tapping of the chest or ribs sometimes will help break up any fliud they have in there. Only one finger is needed kinda like burping them. Very lightly

I use a heating pad also much better they can move away if to hot or move to get more heat.

keep her warm, tummy full and with momma , hope the pup starts to improve for you

I use nutri drops also they work great one drop 2 times a day.
You can only do your best sometimes it is enough and other times it is not.

I'm glad to hear the puppy's tummy is full and round. That is a good sign he is getting enough to eat and that what you are doing is working.

Is he still raspy this morning?

Not as much as yesterday it is mainly his nose today. I weighted him this morning and he weights 3.4 ounces. Yea

The little one is the olne that needs Mom the molst.

When I have atiny one, I remove the others for 5 minutes, every 2 hours to make sure he gets to eat first.

Then I put the rest back, but keep my hands around him so the others do not push him off.

I do this day and night, every 2 hours. I also make sure that he gets the plumbest teat so he does not have to struggle to get milk.

Make sure he can get away from the heat if it gets to warm. I like to use a heating pad and put it under only half of the bed.

They will just naturally move twoard the warmth so if they are not going to the heated area, it is because it is too hot.

Thats the way I feel too. I am in awe of the breeder that can do it. My only experience with breeding was recently when my cat had a litter of kittens. We lost every one of them but one and that one wouldnt wean and I had to force feed it and bottle feed it because the mother stopped nursing. It is alot keeping up with feeding one i cant imagine doing it with a whole litter. Plus I think some people have a gift of saving weak animals and try as hard as I did I dont think I have that gift. Anyway best of luck with your little guy, youve gotten some good advice. Just keep him warm and eating and youll be okay

YorkieShadow 11-06-2009 02:31 PM
