what do i do? I figured i would post in the Breeders sect. knowing you all have experience. I purchased a pup 6 days ago and brought him to the vet and he had diareah there. they tested it and neg. Next day still diareah and i brought him back again they did not retest but said its a new home. Day three he started to vomit and they had me bring him to 24 hour care facility. They found Coddidia which was not found at other vet and real bad. He has been on IV for fluids and sugar sub since. He started to eat the second day there and yesterday morning and they took him off the IV and he stopped eating and sugar was low again so they keep him last night. I called at 9pm and they said he is still not eating . QUESTION; What do I do with him? The vet bills were 300 for the first 3 days and 1500 for the hospital. I cant do another day in the hospital. What can I do to get him to eat. I brought him Cesears and he ate it the first but not now. I made boiled chicken and broth and nothing. Do i bring him home and siringe feed him? What kind of liquid sugar sub besides the Nutra cal can I give him? He is only 15oz at 9 weeks I called the breeder and he said YOU BOUGHT HIM HE IS YOURS NOW. NJ STATE law says i have 14 days to return him. BUt this man does not give a sh*%. I knew if i did return him with no payment back they would just let him die. I am trying everthing here...please any suggestions? Melssa Felicity:aimeeyorkDaisy:aimeeyorkand Baby Rocky:aimeeyork |
I would call my attorney, do you have a contract, I got my Laci from a not so good breeder but I still did have a contract... it stated I had 72 hours to bring her to the vet...If there was something major wrong I could return her or at thier discrestion they would pay the vet bills... It sounds like you have one sick puppy on your hands.... Please dont let him suffer... if the breeder wont take him back and get him healthy please contact a yorkie rescue near you, maybe they can help...Where did you get your puppy???? |
Do you have any Albon give him/her 1cc today & 1/2 cc everyday for 9 days this should take care of the coccsidia. use nutra-cal or karo syrup for sugar, |

You might check small claims court to bring action against this breeder as long as this is the state law of 14 days. I would hope you would post his name so no other person buys a dog from this cruel human. |
There is a high caloric liquid that I use called Dyne. I like it much better than nutri stat and it is very palatable and the dogs actually love it. Although coccidia can be caused by stress and a new home that baby should have never left that breeder at 15 ounces. :thumbdown I don't let my babies go now until they are 2#. No matter how long that takes. I normally do not have babies that size but if and when it happens they stay here until they are 2# and have had no problems. Best of luck to you and your baby. I think small claims court is your best bet! |
This exact same thing happened to me when I brought Ellie home. The doctor gave her some Albon for the coccidia, and I would syringe her 2 tsp of pedialyte every hour. After a day or so of doing this, she seemed to get better. The vet can also give them a vitamin B12 shot which should increase the energy level and make them hungry. I would contact the breeder and explain everything to see if they would let you return the puppy for a new one, or pay some of the medical bills. I agree that the puppy should have never left until it was at least 2 lbs. |
I spoke to a friend who is an exotic/ small animal vet. she told me to keep him there one more night and have them wean him off the iv and iv glucose. and to administer him syringe feeding of food and nutracal so that he is better watched. I saw him today and he looks much better than yesterday. He was filled with puppy kisses and very much curious.:)He ate 1 tsp of baby food just before i got there too. Vet ran a liver workup and and ultrasound to rule out Liver Shunt and it was negative. He was very bloated and vet said it was from the parasites and the treatment and he has some fluid. thanks all ...ill keep you post in the am |
I am so glad he is doing a little better. Hopefully by tomorrow you can take him home and let him recuperate there. Thanks for updating. |
Ahhh, poor baby...I'll pray he does much better over night and recuperates completely so you can have the happy, healthy puppy that you so deserve. |
I will add my prayers for your little one. What a callous breeder to first of all sell a puppy foryou to take home at 9 weeks and less than a pound! I agree with the poster that said they should be at least 12 weeks old and 2 pounds before going home. Then for that breeder to tell you "You bought him, he's yours!" is plain horrible. I would get some evidence of him saying that. Email him, call him with someone else listening in on the phone, anything to have evidence that he refused to take the puppy back or give you money towards the vet bills. Then I would take him to small claims court to pay the vet bill. If your state law says you had 14 days to return him, and he would nto allow it, then I think you should have a good case to get him to pay the vet bills. I am glad you took it upon yourself to get him the care, including emergency care, he needed. So many go into pet ownership without funds to properly take care of puppies when emergencies arise. Even though Iam sure you did not appreciate having to rack up bills like that, you put the pup first! I wish you well with your little one. Hopefully he will gain quickly once you get him through this initial crisis. Look forward to seeing pics once he is well. |
I am so sorry to be reading this but I am glad to hear your puppy is on the road to recovery. I get so angry when I read this stuff. Don't understand the breeders doing this. Certainly don't understand the buyers buying puppies at less than a pound.....take this breeder to small claims court. Most puppies do experience coccidia from the change of environment but this is untolerable. |

It doesn't matter what your breeder says. New Jersey law requires the breeder to reimburse your vet bills up to the price of your puppy whether you return him or not. Show this to your breeder and remind him that if you take him to court, he'll have to pay court costs and attorney fees on top of the vet bills. New Jersey Pet Lemon Law |

I agree, a pup should never leave their momma until they are 2lb. NO exceptions. I can't imagine letting a 1lb pup go. Wow, no way. And its obvious the "breeder" could care less. They should be willing to take back the pup. It does sound like this is a much bigger situation that what it was originally. I really hope you get this all situated out b/c I know that it must be incredibly stressful for your family right now. I hope and pray that all of your babies are healthy and you can catch these uncaring people. |
I hope that your babies are doing better and that life is getting easier for you in this matter. I find it hard to accept this breeders way of thinking, I don't care if someone else owned one of my puppies and turned around and resold it even though my contrac states this can't be done, I would still do all I could to help the new owner get the puppy back on track and to locate the person who resold one of my babies to her. Never would one of my babies leave my home before 12 weeks of age and even longer if I didn't feel that their weight was were it needed to be for them to be healthy. I'm affraid if someone told me that "you bought him its your problem" I would end up in jail because I would bust is jaw for him. I tell all of my new owners that just because they bought my puppy doesn't mean that he/she isn't still my baby. I brought them into this world and it is my responsiblity to be sure that they have the best life available to them. If this poor baby had that many parasites then its plan to see that he didn't have the proper kind of care with the breeder. I'm going to shut my mouth now before I say something that shouldn't be said on a public forum. I will keep you and your babies in my prayers and if I can be of any help please feel free to send me an email. |

Well the Code dept is going to the house tomorrow and issuing them a summons. and the Health dept is issuing one also. The county clerk gave me the names of the tennents so i went to the police dept and filed a report but could not charge them with a complaint and crime b/c they did not have a code of crime for it. The officer was kind enough to look into it further and return a call later in the day, he also spoke with the code dept and he said that is the only crime that they can catch them on is running a business in a residential area and not filing it with the township. so they will get a summons for a couple of hundred and have to go to court. The puppy lemon law is strick but it would require a possitive identification from them and going to small claims court. The $$$ is not the issue here. I just dont want to see them selling puppies anymore and sick ones at that. Im calling the code officer again in the AM because he said to the police officer if the pups look sick he will call Animal control to remove them. But Im going to tell him to have them produce a recent Health Cert from a local vet because you cant tell pups are sick just by looking at them for a minute unless you are a vet. well thanks again for listening xoxo melissa |
Bless his little heart...and yours. I do hope they are kept from selling puppies...and I pray they get any pups that are still there out safely. These poor little guys deserve a better start in life...what a crying shame. Karma, they'll get it in the end...what goes around comes around. |

Sounds that by law you should be able to legally, however you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip. Best wishes to you and your babies. :) |
Still praying, how's your baby boy doing? |
He is doing much better! thank you ...prayer works. I am done with all the medication. He is eating more on his own now. i only feed him once during the day and once in the middle of the night. im affraid his sugar will get low again. Vet wanted to start his shots over again b/c he does not know if they were REALLY done. I dont feel confortable bringing him in this week b/c his stool is often still loose. I hope the coccidia is gone. ill bring him early next week for the shots and another stool. He is much more perky too He even started to bark yesterday! We have him alittle over 2 weeks now and I dont know if something is wrong with his growth...He was 15 oz 2 weeks ago and now he is only 16 1/2. ?? |
The sickness probably made it hard for him to gain weight. Give it another week, if he continues to do well and not gain much, then I would do the bloodwork and see if he has LS. Also, you might want to free feed him so that his blood sugar doesn't get low. You could also put some Karo Syrup in his water to help with the blood sugar. My vet recommended that to me and for my new owners so that the puppy would be sure to get some sugar. I would do the nutri-cal in the morning and the evening before he goes to bed. I'm glad to hear that he's doing better. |
Oh yea!!! Happy to hear he is perking up a bit. And barking already, huh? I remember being so excited the first time I heard Winston's voice, oh that was so many barks ago!!! I sure hope he's going to be just fine now...just be sure he eats as much as he needs, he's still very tiny...I'd suggest more frequent feedings, twice a day, with his size just may not be enough. Get your vets advise on that...and keep track of his weight. Good luck with your new baby...enjoy some cuddle time!!! |
Wow im so sorry you have been thru so much with your little guy, I will be praying for his full recovery and i hope you get some peace with this awful person who called them self a breeder , You are a very good mommy !! I keep going over in my head what he said to you  How selfish and uncaring can one get, I hope you get your day in court and he gets his ;) |
This is so sad, keeping your little boy in my prayers |
Rocky is having a VERY good day today!!! he is eating all day on his own and he is active and happy!!! i am so happy that he is continuing to improve each day! ill post some pics soon. He is so stinkin cute ..cant wait to show you all!!! thanks so much for all your replies xoxo melissa felicity:aimeeyorkDaisy:aimeeyorkand baby Rocky:aimeeyork |
