Age to retire a male?

What age do you guys usually retire your male? I've got a chance to buy a pretty nice male but he just turned 6. Would I be able to use him for a while still or should he just be retired to a pet home?

in my opinion retired to a pet home

AKC rules state I think after the age of 11 or 12 any breedings must be witnessed by a Vet. I don't think a dog should be used for stud at that age.

Mardelin you don't think a 6 year old should be used or you don't think an 11 or 12 year old should be used?

I would probably retire a stud at 6 or 7 in my opinion because by then I should have another prodigy at home being proven. I strongly believe that after a certain point in time in a dogs life they've done their job and it's time to retire to the good life and enjoy their senior years

I've just finished using Charmer, he's 6, will I use him again, probably. He'll soon have 4 Champions that he has produced and I'd like him to have at least 2 more to obtain his ROM. Besides, he's just started producing girls. Out of the 15 pups he's sired, prior to the last litter he'd only produced 3 girls. But, then he is my pet first....so, he'll never be placed in a pet home, because he is in one, mine.

Now my girls are retired at 5 and spayed.

Well, Radar isn't going anywhere either, he's in his forever home with me! He's almost 4 and has had only one litter here at home 2 girls placed in a pet home and has 3 boys out in Cali so we'll see if one of them champions. I'm not sure he'll ever receive his ROM since I don't breed much.

Remember Charmer was bred to Sandra and Joyce's bitch (2) Champions there. Lee used him and Matchbox is out of that litter. Then there's CJ and I should have kept his litter brother too, that was a gorgeous, consistent litter. I've just used him with Tahlulah and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I remember! I just don't breed much and I don't have any bitches here at home right now. Hopefully that will change next year LOL...then I can breed Radar again. I do plan on breeding him to this bitch I have here of Linda Thompson's next year. So we'll see what we get there too.

Come to think of it I've only had 4 litters in the last 5 years.....

If it hadn't been for Sandra and Lee using him and getting Champions, he wouldldn't be close to 4 Champion gets.

I'm anxious to see what Radar's boys are gonna do out there in Cali when she starts showing them....
My time will come for champions LOL...I'm really wanting to show more for others than stay in the whelping box lol you know me!

I think it scares the bejibbies out of anyone that has compassion and love for the animals. I couldn't do it on a regular basis, just to sell puppies. Not my thing.

I liken it to when I got pregnant, I was so excited and then when it came close to the time to deliver, I'd think.......what did I get myself into, I can't back out of this. Same thing with my girls.

Personally I retire my girls before the age of 7, and I had retired TNT, who is now almost 9. However, time flies and I stupidly hadn't saved back a son.. and decided I better be doing that. So I used him on 2 females a while back, hoping for a special little boy or two to keep for myself. So far, they're looking pretty good! TNT is my main man, so he will continue to stay here with me. He's enjoying re-retirement, and he's terribly demanding for treats... LOL
OP I don't think I would start with a 6 year old stud, and let him go to a pet home.
