Well the Barbara's are in Florida and Luke and Diane are in Ohio. But I really would consider toy handlers vs. All-breed handlers.

A good friend of mine shows for Deb Sillers and if she shows for Deb I trust her :) I met Deb in Chicago and she is a very nice person. I've seen her dogs and they are nice yorkies! I hear Deb is great and is very professional.

I know several people that have used Luke and Diane....they are wonderful with clients dogs and Champion them very quickly.

Perhaps my assumption is incorrect...but you are aware that the dog lives with the handler for the vast majority of the time. A bond between the handler and the dog needs to be created. Professional handlers are paid a monthly fee along with their travel expenses. I'm not certain you'd find one who is interested in teaching you how to show your own dog. This is their job afterall.

Since it sounds like your interest is showing yourself...you can find confirmation classes locally to attend.

I agree, most handlers do not give free lessons. There are some handlers that will occasionally hold handling classes. Your best bet would be to contact a local breed club and see of there is someone giving conformation classes.

There is a lot of hard work that goes into socialization and growing coat before a handler takes a dog. I know many owners will show the dogs themselves and get all the single points and turn the dog over to a handler for the majors. A dog has to win two majors of 3 points or more to complete their championship and in some areas majors are hard to find so you just about have to send your dog with a handler or plan on doing a lot of traveling. The majors are determined by the number of dogs entered and some areas take more dogs than in other areas to get a major. It take 15 points for a dog to become a champion.

There are some handlers that will take your dog at ringside but they don't usually do that unless your dog is already well trained.

Good post. One more thing to add if you don't mind. Even if a dog is well trained. It is totally unfair to the dog to put it with a stranger.

I agree, it is best if the dog has time to get acquainted with the handler but I have seen dogs taken in by a handler with very little beforehand contact and did amazingly well and won. I think a lot of it depends on the dog and their personality. Also, these were yorkie handlers that the owner was familiar with and the handler was familiar with the dog and the dog had ring experience.

I know Sue and Norm, good hound and Boston handler, but they do not know expert Yorkie grooming and handling..look for a Yorkie handler as advised.
