She popped it, making room for the first pup. I am praying for a safe and easy whelp for you - and Heav'ne, of course. |
still no pups. Went to the vet and he said she may go another day or two. he did observe her panting a little but he said she is fine |
Ok some people might disagree with me on this, but I left Emma for about 20 minutes, came back and her water had broke. When I sat back down she crawled between my legs and that's when the action started. I don't know if she needed a break frome me petting or if she worked herself into a fit while I was away but that seemed to do the trick. Maybe Heav'ne needs a little alone time, trust me when I say that it was hard to walk away but I think that me sitting there petting her (even though she wanted me to) relaxed her to the point where the contractions weren't coming strong enough. Of course if I really knew she worked herself into a fit it would absolutley break my heart |
good advice!!!!! I will go to another room but I will leave the baby mointer on just in case she cries. Maybe I have been smothering her to much. Thanks for the advice. How's Emma and her precious babies? |
I do not recommend leaving the momma alone if you think she is in labor. The best thing to do is leave her where you can watch and observe her. I always just chill out in the bedroom when my female is in labor. I just watch tv and they will lay quietly on the bed next to me and I can see when they are having contractions. |

Good luck and I hope you have a safe whelp! Sounds like you are pretty close! |
I think we may be on a puppy watch!!! Heav'ne is panting so hard and laying on her side then getting back up. She wants me near. When I tried to use the restroom she tried to jump out of the pen so of course I am sitting in the pen with her. Her tongue is hanging out of her mouth and she is huffing and puffing like she just ran a marathon. I cant get her to drink any water. She seems to have some relief since I turned on the fan to cool her off. Should I give her some whelping pudding? |
Hmmm, I dont know about the whelping pudding. Im still learning in that area. But what is puppy watch? |

as for the whelping pudding i would not give any till she has had the puppies, if you want to give her something try softened vanilla ice cream after she has had the 1st pup, it will give her a boost of energy and help with the contractions. Good luck |
Finally!!! ;) I am a little worry about her not drinking much as it will slow down her milk production. Try to mix water with a tiny bit of milk, or chicken broth. Try to make her drink from a glass or from your hand. My females get very picky and don't drink much either when they are about to whelp but I do my best to encourage them drinking a little. Hope your female will be having a safe and easy delivery. |
I would never give a dog milk. Some people give them a little puppy formula after the pups are born but regular milk is not good for dogs. |

Sorry for the misunderstand. I should of insisted on a tiny bit of it. when I mention to mix it with water. I am talking about a tea spoon of milk for a cup of water. This is a little trick I have learn in a female reproduction class when I was studying cynologie (the science of dog) a few years ago. So I am positive that it is safe. |
I have been watching this thread and noticed that there hasn't been a reply. Did she have the babies yet? If so, how many boys & girls and weights? |
still no pups yet. she stopped panting but she is still restless. she did drink a little water this morning. her bowels are loose and she still tries to get comfortable. her vet called and said that the 1st stage of labor can take up to 24 hours. I am out of my mind right now. I refuse to leave her side. I cant sleep. But i guess the saying a watched dog never whelps is maybe true. |

We're still waiting, right along with you. |
I know how you feel... I arrange to have an almost empty schedule for the whole week when one of my females is due for whelping. I use to cancel all my appointment last minute thinking today is the day! I usually THINK TODAY IS THE DAY starting about 2-3 days before due date. But I always KNOW when it is time... Don't worry, you know too |
well her panting started yesterday evening and then it stopped. It started back up today around noon and she has been panting very very hard, shaking, and trembling. She keeps changing positions as if she cant seem to get comfortable. Yesterday her vet said she was in the first stage of labor. I though the first stage last 6-12 hours. |
some times it can last as long as 24 hours for the first stage |
This whelping is very concerning to me. Yesterday morning you said you walked her for three block and she came back exhausted. That could be very dangerous for the puppies. Yesterday afternoon you said you took her to the vets and the vet told you it would be a day or two. Then at 3 a.m. you posted the vet called and said she may be in 1st stage labor. Do you know anyone that could possible look at your female that has some experience and can help you? It is so difficult for us to give advice when we don't know what is happening. What have you been feeding her? Does she have any kind of discharge? I am just very concerned about this little momma. If you feel you need more help then you can pm me your number and I would be glad to talk to you. |

I agree it sounds long and strange not the normal whelp |
thoughts and prayers for your baby. |
I'm just going by what the vet told me. I have since called him back and he said that if she dosen't whelp by tonight I need to bring her in tomorrow morning. I can hear the heartbeats and the puppies are very active. Today is day 62. She ate a little yogurt and kibble. I'm kinda scared also because the vet had me thinking that she should have whelped already. Could I be confusing panting with her just being tired. Panting is when they breath really hard with their tongue habging out of their mouth right? She has been doing that since noon today. She also did it yesterday evening but it stopped. She's not acting sick and her temp is 98.0. |
98.0 sounds like puppies in the next 12-24 hours...how long has it been that low? |
Wow you two are really going through a lot right now. Wish I could help but I have no idea what whelping is like. You guys are in my thoughts. |
Hope everything is ok. Keeping my fingers crossed... |
