First time breeding questions Hi I am very new to this site- this is only my third post/thread thingy lol. Anyway I am planning on breeding my little ten month old girl in the future. Please tell me the earliest safe time for her to have puppies. I want Miley and her pups to be ok. Also, she hasnt had her first heat yet and she is pretty small. Is this normal? I have read that smaller dogs have longer periods of time between their heats? Can a dog that hasnt gotten her first heat yet or isnt in heat at the time still get pregnant? I wouldnt do that to Miley if it wasnt safe, but just wondering. Also, how much should i pay for a stud male for her? I only have $95 at the time. Oh, one more thing. Where can I find a godo mentor? I read it is good for a first timer to have a mentor. Sorry for asking so many questions, but i want to do everything right. Any other help is apprecieated. Thank you, wolflover:aimeeyork:thumbs up |
1st off, how big is she? |
Her other thread, looking for stud services, says the yorkie is only 3 1/2 pounds. |
She is currently 3.1 pounds. I am hoping she will grow bigger so I can breed her though. Oh right, sorry i rote 3.1 I meant 3 and a half. |
Ok, I had to go look up the other thread. Chances are, your girl will not make the 5# mark for breeding. I would have her spayed. If you do any research on here at all, you will find many threads about the dangers of breeding a girl that is so small. The amount you have for a stud fee scares me. Please don't take this harshly. If that's all you have for a stud fee, then are you going to be able to care for your girl if something goes wrong with the pregnancy or whelp? I don't have much time to devote to your questions right now, but I really feel that you should seriously re-consider breeding her. |
I'm no breeder but I would rather take that 95 bucks you have and save up a bit more so you can pay for a spay for your dog. 3 and a half pounds is way to tiny and shes already 10 months, chances are she won't even break 4 lbs. Breeding isn't so simple and it seems you haven't looked into it at all. Studs will run you a few hundred or pick of the litter as well as the possible c section your small mama would probably need which is around 1,000+ depending on your area. |
ok i just got back I had to bathe her anyway yeah i know about the dangers of her being too small and stuff and that wouldnt be the stud fee. I am going to save up and researcha few years before i breed her if she ever grows big enuff. i am trying to save up and find a job so i can save up about 3,000 for the stud male, whelping box, emergencies, etc. If I cant breed her, I might show her if she turns out to be breed standard. In fatc i was going to post a pic of her and ask ppl tought she might be breed standard on the showing forum if you want to look at it. She is almost dry now from her bath, so i need to brush her and stuff, brb |
I would suggest going to some shows in your area and try to find some others who might be able to help or mentor you. At the very least you will learn ALOT there but I would caution you, to breed these guys, you have to really love the breed because if you're doing it for some extra income, I'm afraid you're going to be very disappointed. It costs alot between vet fees, stud fees and other expenses. And Yorkies typically have small litters. You can easily see the people on here who only have one or two pups - or even none. So you have to be prepared to spend a fair amount of money with no guarantee that you will even recoup what you've spent. Don't mean to discourage you but I just want you to be prepared.... If it's something you have a passion for, do tons of research and try to find someone to mentor you! Good luck! |
ty for not being negative at all and for answering. Fyi, Im not doing it for money. And i really love the breed. -wolflover |
When people ask how they get started breeding or if they have question about breeding, my first response is always, "Do you have a mentor?" I always suggest finding one to work with FIRST before even worrying about any other details. Having a well experienced breeder to help guide you and help you research and learn is really the best place to start. He/she can best help you prepare and learn about all of the other issues you addressed BEFORE you actively start trying to breed your girl. In addition, a mentor will be key in helping you to evaluate your girl to determine if she is a quality representation of the breed that should be bred. Contacting the breeder you got your girl from would be the obvious, best place to start looking for one, I would think. Good luck and welcome to YT! :) |
Yes, I will find the next close dog show maybe to find a mentor |

Others have already told you, and I agree, this female will be too small to breed. None of mine have grown after 10 months of age. Some may fill out a little after a year old, but some lose the baby fat and weigh less too. If you and your parents do decide to breed her, please realize that you are risking losing the life of your little female as well as the puppies. Pls spay the little girl as soon as possible. If she gets accidently impregnated, needs a C-section, has complications, etc....that $95 will not go far to help pay down the thousands of dollars of vet fees she may accumulate. |
Being you are 11 you have lots of time on your side. You might even want to think about assisting a handler. Great career in handling. Oh to be 11 again and starting into the dog world. I don't know where in Texas you are located, but there are some great breeders in that state. My mentor resides there. If you are in the San Antonio area, there's a big dog show going on right now. Houston is coming up......Onofrio.com is a great site to visit to find upcoming shows. Mentor first, research, study everything you can about yorkies, canine genetics, breeding.....and the yorkie standard...... |
I did not realize the OP was only 11. Here is her other thread with pictures of her little girl. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-standard.html You have all given her very good advise. I would all like to mention to her that she could consider Junior Showmanship. |

~Isabella..... I know your 11 years old and think it's a neat idea to breed yorkies, but Miley is way too small for that. She should be spayed. Because if anything happened to her, I know you would be so upset. You do seem older than your age, but you still have a long way to go before you should even consider breeding. It is very expensive, with all the tests the boy and girl dog need before you can put them together, the Vet bills, shots, sickness, and alot more. In the next several years, learn as much as you can. Maybe go to some dog shows in your area. Get to know some of the handlers and see if you can assist. And when you are older and have a job and learned everything there is to know and still want to breed, find a mentor that lives close to you. What does your Mom say about this? I would take that $95 you have saved up and use it towards Mileys spay. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
1 Attachment(s) Hi, I'm new to this forum and my little Yorkie name is Lulu, To be quite honest, I don't have much knowledge and I'm learning about Yorkies, how often do usually they get pregnant ( months ?? ) As my Lulu is female I'm trying to research and learn as much I can in order to be able to do a good job when she gets pregnant. Any advise will be appreciated, thank you so much I attached a pic of her. |

I wouldn't even be considering breeding IF I don't even know how long a dog is pregnant for. Dogs are pregnant from 61-64 days and they can get pregnant twice a year as they only come into heat twice a year. You shouldn't breed a yorkie that is under 5 lbs unless you want alot of complications which can STILL arise. |
Oh wow a lot of people posted here and I wasnt gone that long. Anyway, today I did a few things to see if she would like showing. It turns out that she loves and is very good at the trotting around in the circle thing. Only thing is, she is afraid of heights. About the breeding thing, My mom/dad would pay for her to be spayed, and I have read like, well I lost count but a lot of articles and stuff on breeding dogs and yorkies. What do you mean by assisting the handler? Like I know what you are talking about by it, but I have never heard of that. I will look into Junior Showmanship or what ever it was called and that guy I forgot what you said his name was. Back to the breeding thing, my mom says its fine with her and my dad says " If you want more dogs, the best way is for Miley to have puppies" I told him that she is too tiny but he said she will be fine. Oh, and this is a little random, but one of my pet peeves is when people tell me to spay my dog. Ok I was not planning on making my post thins long. :aimeeyork |
Oh and whats weird is, every time I want to breed an animal, its always too young or too old. (or too small). My ancient bird, Sky, laid eggs, but she accientlly crushed them and she was really old. But she still really wants to be a mommy. And Miley is too young and too small.:(:fallen: |
There is always a lot of negativity when someone asks a breeding question on here everyone goes into attack mode i seem to think. You are young but im not going to put you down for being young i thinks its great you have a love and interest about yorkies. Just because your young doesn't mean you cant do things you start young and know more when you get older. If your mom and dad have your back and will pay the vet bills and will help you then its solely your choice. Your girl is 3.5 pounds at 10 months i know my females grew when they hit a year old she was 2.8 at 10 months and now at 1 year and 4 months she is 3.6 she is not fat she just grew more. Some dogs grow more and some dogs are done at 10 months. There is alot in breeding dogs you need to do your research and with her being that small you need to make sure the male is much smaller than her like 2 pounds. You need to know that you can loose her if you breed her because she is small and you can loose the pups. if you do or don't want to spay your dog is up to you and your parents. Just make responsible choices. they are living things and we don't want dogs dieing needlessly or puppies that don't have homes because of irresponsible breeding. Or unhealthy dogs because you don't know her background who are her parents who are the males parents you think you might breed her with stuff like that. Its A lot to think of hun.. |
Why do people call me hun? Im not that young. And yeah I noticed that too, on pretty much every website with forums and people ask questions about breeding, people always reply with spay her and all that. I told my mom about how we might have to pay $1000+ for C-section emergancy vet visits and stuff. She said well we'll have to wait for when that time comes then. But what if that time isnt when Miley is ready (in heat)? I know it is good to wait for her second heat to start or when shes 2 years to breed her. It is so hard to wait though. And I really want to do something with her, like show her, breed her, etc.:aimeeyork |
I think it is wonderful that you come on here educate yourself about breeding. Unfortunately, I really don't think you will be able to breed your female. She is going to be to small. Even with a small male really... I would take the risk if I was you. It is also important for you to have a big minimum of $1000 on the side in case of emergency c-section. Make sure your parents understand and agree to that... I also agree with the group... you should look for a mentor. good luck with everything. |
I call everyone hun and you are 11 im 25 you are a baby to me so im going to call you hun:D lol. If you want to do something with her show her or teach her cool tricks. i think breeding her is a long ways away for your little girl atleast wait 2 years don't push breeding on her just because you want it. I think you should show her even if she isnt show standard who cares do it. Teach her tricks make one of thoughs show rings with tricks in them do that with her for now. i would like to see videos of her doing them as would anyone her. You just got her give yourself time to think about breeding and if you don't get her spayed make sure she doesn't get pregnant without you knowing it could turn out very bad. A bigger male can get to her and she could die i want to stress that to you its no joke you don't want to lose your baby. |
Try to get her into modeling put her into photo contests for pet of the month. I think petco and petsmart have contests and so do a lot of internet dog stores. That would be fun to dress her up and take a bunch of pictures of her. Teach her how to model. |
Just to give you an idea.... I've spent $2000 between vet and stud fees on my first litter. That doesn't even take into account my time and missed work. And I had few problems. She delivered naturally on her own. I have 3 puppies. You will see others on here who have had one puppy and a c-section. So in my opinion, if you want another puppy it would be cheaper to buy one than try to breed for one and risk losing your girl. But if that's the direction you still want to go in regardless of the cost, you've come to a really good place to research. I'd encourage you to do alot of reading and take your time - there's no rush! At 11 it's easy to do the impulsive thing and people your age usually have a hard time waiting for things they want but I hope that you remember that now you have to step up and kinda be an adult as you are responsible for another living being and you need to think about what's best for you girl and not what you want. Sometimes doing the right thing is not always easy. I hope you make the right decision here.... PS. If you really want to be apart of the birthing process - can I suggest starting with chickens? They hatch in 21 days. You can buy an incubator for under $100 and they are alot of fun. If you get the eggs from a farmer - most are willing to take the chickens back after they are born. I've done this several times myself and have so much fun with it! I thought maybe you might enjoy it too! |
I tried to post a vid of miley doing sit, down, shake, wave, dance, spin around, and high five. It wont upload though. I have asked my parents about the chicken thing once, and they said no. But they let me breed my budgie. Except she never became a mother. I am so bored in the summer, I need something to do with my babys (two budgies and a puppy). I have spent my whole summer so far on my laptop I got for graduating elementary school. The only things that I can tell are faults are her topline is curved upward a bit, her black is only just breaking into that steely bluish color, she isnt all tan in the correct spots yet, her back might be kind of long, and i forgot the last one. I hope her colors change into the right ones. Can you give me more information on this Junior Showing? While I am waiting I will google it though. |
I hope you will reconsider breeding Miley. She is going to be way too small to breed and there's a large possibility she could die giving birth, or at the very least, have to have a C section. You could possibly lose all the pups too because you won't have whelping experience, and might wait too late to get Miley to the vet. I personally would never risk a dog's life that I loved just to have a litter of puppies. I am not trying to be mean to you. There truly is a big risk of losing Miley since she's so small. Think how much that would hurt you to lose her. I have been a dog and horse breeder since 1982 and am very experienced, but I have no desire to breed yorkies. My dog is a champion sired male and most of his pedigree is red, meaning most of his ancestors were champion show dogs. And he is gorgeous! But, I still had him neutered at eight months old because I did not want to breed yorkies, and I sure didn't want a male dog lifting his leg peeing in my home. I think a wonderful thing you could do with Miley that you'd both enjoy is turn her into a therapy dog. You could teach her some tricks, dress her up, and take her to hospitals and nursing homes so people who are sick could enjoy her too. When my nephew was eight years old he was diagnosed with cancer and was extremely sick in the children's hospital. While he was in the hospital, the only bright moment of his stay was when some wonderful people brought their therapy dogs to the hospital to entertain the kids. The dogs did tricks for the children, and later they were able to get up in the beds and cuddle with the sick kids. I swear, tears were pouring down my cheeks, seeing how much joy a little Yorkie brought to my nephew when he was so very sick. That's what I want to do with my yorkie. It would probably bring a lot of joy to your life too. I know an excellent dog trainer in Dallas whom I'm sure could teach you how to train Miley. I've seen her do amazing things with dogs. Her name is Carla Collins and her training school is Sit Means Sit. Here is her website. http://www.sitmeanssit.com/dog-train...-dallas-texas/ Please email her to see if she'll be having classes in your area. I know she trains in the Frisco area. She is a wonderful person and could help you so much. And please contact the handler Mardelin mentioned. He could help you more than you can imagine! I would have loved to have met a respected handler when I was 11 years old and learned to show dogs that young. I would like to say I'm really proud of you for starting so young, learning about raising dogs, showing dogs, training dogs, and breeding dogs. I would have loved to have gotten into showing when I was your age, instead of in my late 20's. I hope you will try to learn all you can, and try not to be impatient. I know it's hard but you have so much potential, and who knows. Some day in the future you could be a top show dog handler, a top breeder, or a top obedience trainer. Use the resources so readily available to you in the DFW metroplex and you will do great. Best of luck to you!! |
My post was so long I didn't see your post listing all the tricks you've already taught Miley. Congratulations. You are doing a great job and are on your way. If you need any help training her, give Carla a call or email her. |
