First time breeding questions

Hi I am very new to this site- this is only my third post/thread thingy lol. Anyway I am planning on breeding my little ten month old girl in the future. Please tell me the earliest safe time for her to have puppies. I want Miley and her pups to be ok. Also, she hasnt had her first heat yet and she is pretty small. Is this normal? I have read that smaller dogs have longer periods of time between their heats? Can a dog that hasnt gotten her first heat yet or isnt in heat at the time still get pregnant? I wouldnt do that to Miley if it wasnt safe, but just wondering. Also, how much should i pay for a stud male for her? I only have $95 at the time. Oh, one more thing. Where can I find a godo mentor? I read it is good for a first timer to have a mentor. Sorry for asking so many questions, but i want to do everything right. Any other help is
apprecieated. Thank you, wolflover:aimeeyork:thumbs up

1st off, how big is she?

BonBon 07-09-2009 11:47 AM

Her other thread, looking for stud services, says the yorkie is only 3 1/2 pounds.

wolflover 07-09-2009 11:50 AM

She is currently 3.1 pounds. I am hoping she will grow bigger so I can breed her though. Oh right, sorry i rote 3.1 I meant 3 and a half.

Ok, I had to go look up the other thread. Chances are, your girl will not make the 5# mark for breeding. I would have her spayed. If you do any research on here at all, you will find many threads about the dangers of breeding a girl that is so small.

The amount you have for a stud fee scares me. Please don't take this harshly. If that's all you have for a stud fee, then are you going to be able to care for your girl if something goes wrong with the pregnancy or whelp?

I don't have much time to devote to your questions right now, but I really feel that you should seriously re-consider breeding her.

I'm no breeder but I would rather take that 95 bucks you have and save up a bit more so you can pay for a spay for your dog. 3 and a half pounds is way to tiny and shes already 10 months, chances are she won't even break 4 lbs. Breeding isn't so simple and it seems you haven't looked into it at all. Studs will run you a few hundred or pick of the litter as well as the possible c section your small mama would probably need which is around 1,000+ depending on your area.

wolflover 07-09-2009 02:13 PM

ok i just got back I had to bathe her anyway yeah i know about the dangers of her being too small and stuff and that wouldnt be the stud fee. I am going to save up and researcha few years before i breed her if she ever grows big enuff. i am trying to save up and find a job so i can save up about 3,000 for the stud male, whelping box, emergencies, etc. If I cant breed her, I might show her if she turns out to be breed standard. In fatc i was going to post a pic of her and ask ppl tought she might be breed standard on the showing forum if you want to look at it. She is almost dry now from her bath, so i need to brush her and stuff, brb

I would suggest going to some shows in your area and try to find some others who might be able to help or mentor you. At the very least you will learn ALOT there but I would caution you, to breed these guys, you have to really love the breed because if you're doing it for some extra income, I'm afraid you're going to be very disappointed. It costs alot between vet fees, stud fees and other expenses. And Yorkies typically have small litters. You can easily see the people on here who only have one or two pups - or even none. So you have to be prepared to spend a fair amount of money with no guarantee that you will even recoup what you've spent. Don't mean to discourage you but I just want you to be prepared.... If it's something you have a passion for, do tons of research and try to find someone to mentor you! Good luck!

ty for not being negative at all and for answering. Fyi, Im not doing it for money. And i really love the breed.

When people ask how they get started breeding or if they have question about breeding, my first response is always, "Do you have a mentor?"
I always suggest finding one to work with FIRST before even worrying about any other details. Having a well experienced breeder to help guide you and help you research and learn is really the best place to start. He/she can best help you prepare and learn about all of the other issues you addressed BEFORE you actively start trying to breed your girl. In addition, a mentor will be key in helping you to evaluate your girl to determine if she is a quality representation of the breed that should be bred.
Contacting the breeder you got your girl from would be the obvious, best place to start looking for one, I would think.

Good luck and welcome to YT! :)

I don't want to sound negative about this, but you did say you are only 11 years old in one of your other threads. That is way too young to be thinking about breeding a dog even though you sound more mature and wise than most of your contemporaries. What are your parents feelings in all of this?

Others have already told you, and I agree, this female will be too small to breed. None of mine have grown after 10 months of age. Some may fill out a little after a year old, but some lose the baby fat and weigh less too. If you and your parents do decide to breed her, please realize that you are risking losing the life of your little female as well as the puppies. Pls spay the little girl as soon as possible.

If she gets accidently impregnated, needs a C-section, has complications, etc....that $95 will not go far to help pay down the thousands of dollars of vet fees she may accumulate.

Being you are 11 you have lots of time on your side. You might even want to think about assisting a handler. Great career in handling. Oh to be 11 again and starting into the dog world.

I don't know where in Texas you are located, but there are some great breeders in that state. My mentor resides there.

If you are in the San Antonio area, there's a big dog show going on right now. Houston is coming up......Onofrio.com is a great site to visit to find upcoming shows.

Mentor first, research, study everything you can about yorkies, canine genetics, breeding.....and the yorkie standard......

I did not realize the OP was only 11. Here is her other thread with pictures of her little girl.

You have all given her very good advise. I would all like to mention to her that she could consider Junior Showmanship.

Didn't even notice the age. I think that you have been given a great suggestion here--Junior Showing is a GREAT way to get started!
