Poor Breeding
 
If you have an unusually large Yorkie like15 lbs. or so does that mean he has been poorly bred??:confused:

I'm no breeder, but I believe the answer is "no", there are genetic factors that you can't completely breed out. Size is just one trait in many that make up standard; a larger dog may have a beautiful coat, great bone structure, proper ear placement, and many other things that make up standard. Very few dogs are perfect, but a good breeder will produce dogs that closely fit standard. Personally, I would love to see a Yorkie that fit standard in all ways except size, and I think a 60-pound Yorkie in full coat would be gorgeous. :D

I have a larger Yorkie and someone just told me that - Not that it would make a difference as I love him completely no matter what! But I was curious!!

The Yorkie started out as a much bigger dog, and was gradually bred down, to the toy category, or below 7 pounds, but there are occasionally throwbacks to the larger size. Not necessarily. Poor breeding will produce 'out of standard' dogs, but just becuase you have an oversized dog doensn't mean it was a poor breeding.

It depends on how he looks, not always the size.

I just looked at his picture on your profile. He is so cute! I read that he was a rescue. Could he be mixed with a Silky Terrier?

They tend to be taller, have a longer snout, and weigh more. Does he like to fetch?

I just absolutely LOOOOOOOVE our teapot boy Maximus (12 lbs. of lean mean cuddle machine) and he can't be of bad breeding the otherwise he couldn't have fathered a nearly perfect standard sized daughter named Minnie... (6 lbs. and no, I'm NOT biased :p )

P.S. both are rescues...

Depends on the pedigrees and what they will throw. My Radar is up on leg but he's just right at 6 pounds fined boned and was bred to my champion bitch that was 5 1/2 pounds short on leg, cobby body and she threw a small boned 5 pound bitch and then a bigger boned 7 1/2 pound bitch so somewhere in his or her pedigree she had a larger yorkie that was bred within her lines and both parents of the puppies are great representive of the breed and bred with quality! Both the sire and dam of these puppies went on to be #5 in the US in 08 and then the bitch was the #1 yorkie bitch in breed in 05 so the answer to your question is a good show quality yorkie can throw a yorkie on the larger size :)

Good to know since I have a 8-8.5 lb yorkie!!!! But I believe my little girl has alot of muscle! Shes strong!

No a breeder could be breeding to the standard and end up with a pup that is larger.

There is so many breeds that make up the yorkshire terrier that size and weight is somewhat unpredictable. Any yorkie breeder that can guarantee a yorkies size is fooling thereself. About the only thing we can gurantee is the Yorkie will make a liar out of us everytime. The best we can do is breed for standard, breed for type, health and temperament. Do we get it every time?, no. You can litter mates one small, another well within the standard and another larger.....It happens. It's all how the genetics mesh together. We breed two dogs once and produce just what we're looking for, we breed the same two dogs the next go around and a completely different litter emerges.

Just because your boy is oversized does not make him poorly bred.
