Need some help with breeding first time! I have done a lot of research before doing this and my little girl is almost 2 so I figure now would be a good time. anyways, she is in her 13th day of her heat and I bred her yesterday and today and I will try again tomorrow. the problem is that the male is not tying with her. he always ties outside of her. I have been holding his but so that it won't slip out and I have been able to hold it for atleast 3-5 minutes. also, is it normal for a lot of liquid to come out of her after he comes out? any advice on them not tying? also, how long do you usually have to wait until you can tell if they are pregnant? any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am soooo excited!! thanks |

Now do you say this is the 13 day of her first showing color, or when you first noticed swealing? |
I just finished breeding my two yorkies about 2 weeks ago. It was their first time and mine also (as far as being a part of the actual breeding process). I had a litter with a different female a couple of years ago, that time my female went to a stud for breeding. Like you, our first attempts resulted in outside ties for what seemed like just seconds; certainly not 3-5 minutes like you described, so you've done better than me there. But starting on about day 12 or 13 it was a whole different story. My female was MUCH more receptive to my male (totally standing for him) and my male was even more eager & crazy in wanting my female than he was before! We had a total of 3 successful 5-10 minutes ties (no, not all in one day). I really think that she was not quite "ready" before those days, resulting in the outside ties. Maybe that is what's happening with your pair too. Now the wait and see game begins. Ooooo, I hate this part! I drive myself (and my female probably) crazy checking her belly every day for any tiny change.:p If I remember correctly from the pregnancy 2 years ago, I think I highly suspected that my girl was PG 3-4 weeks after the first tie. Her nipples were prominent and her belly felt a bit firmer. At about the time I was pretty sure, we were able to take her in for palpitation and the vet confirmed the pregnancy. GOOD LUCK TO YOU! |
thanks for the advice well hopefully from what ya'll said, she will get pregnant from what I have been doing. ya'll think it is too early? I actually thought it was getting too late. I am counting the days from when she started bleeding. |
The question she had about the liquid comign out of her after a tie was my same issue, I assume its normal- she is a little stretched out & cant keep ALLLL that liquid inside of her, can someone confirm if that liquid was ok?!? |

Mimi was Artificially Inseminated...I had to hold her rear up for about a minute so the semen won't spill out. Then, I had to walk her back & forth & prevent her from peeing or pooing...but she always does one or the other. lol:rolleyes: Hope that helps. |
It certainly could be that she's not ready yet. However, I have a couple girls that are ready as early as day 7 and some that aren't ready until day 15 or so. It depends on the particular dog. And yes, the liquid is quite normal. Depending on the size and fitness level of your female, the time will vary on when you'll be able to tell if she is bred or not. As in, visibly showing. Usually around 4 - 6 weeks as a general rule. Some you can see within a couple weeks looking a bit swollen. And then there are some that you can't even tell that they are bred at all. Since this is her first litter (and your's as well), it's a good idea to take her for an x-ray about 1 week before she is due. Then you will have a general idea of how big the puppies are, how they are situated and how many she'll have. I say general because x-rays aren't 100% correct. I've never had one right about the number of puppies they were having. And, they can change their position before they are whelped. They definitely do help if you aren't sure if she's bred or not. You have to wait until atleast 10 days before they are due so they will show up on the x-ray. |
ultrasound You can get an ultrasound done around day 35 or so. my vet charges $25.00 sometimes I get one done just to see if they are pregnant or not. It's been wrong before on the number of puppies espically if you wait pass the 35 days. good luck keep in touch |

me too. Ultrasounds cost around $50 here--for a black & white two dimensional. |
