Oops! and then there is the other thing, I am a breeder/exhibitor and have females and males....so, I wouldn't want any "accidental, unplanned breeding taking place" when I wasn't looking. My girls come into heat, and they are monitored, daily, they are immediately seperated into a seperate area of the house. Try keeping a stud away from a girl that's in heat during the night...so, you crate them. |

Although I know Cassie would love to cuddle up with me, she is safer on the floor. I have a neighbor who has a 6 lb. Yorkie. He puts the Yorkie on top of their truck when he is doing yardwork, so the dog won't chase the rake when he's raking. The dog actually jumped off the top of the truck onto the grass!:mad: I just about had a heart attack! Some people just don't realize how fragile their little legs and body are. All you have to do so bathe them once and feel those tiny leg bones! I do not think crating is cruel at all. It is often necessary for the safety of the dog, and the life of our floors and carpeting!:eek: We used to have a springer spaniel, who would just hang out in his crate during the day. It was his den, as you said. Cassie has to be in the same room with me all the time, and will follow me everywhere - even into the bathroom!:eek: She would be heartbroken if I put her in another room at night. But, she has known this all her life. I'm sure if she had not been brought up that way from the beginning, it would be another story. When we are leaving in the car, she will sneak out ahead of us, jump in the car, and hide under the back seat, so she can go with us.:rolleyes: We crate our dogs until they are completely potty trained, and for their first two years or so when we are not here to watch them - for the same reasons you mentioned. I think if I had a tiny Yorkie I would be more prone to crating them when we were gone even when they were older, but Cassie is a very large Yorkie at almost 10 lbs. All she does is sleep when we're gone! At least I think that's what she does, b/c she's always in the same position when we get home.:cool: |

Once championed, and their time for breeding them has come, there is no transitioning needed. They're use to sleeping in a crate in another room. All I have to tell my crew is nite, nite and they know where to go. So, when they go in my room into the puppy play pen, it's a treat for them. |

I am not judging the way you raise your dogs; it sounds like they are happy and well-adjusted, and it works for all of you and your situations. I can't imagine you traveling, and letting them run around the hotel room, and them not wanting to go in the crate b/c see it as a punishment. They see it as their safe place. We used to say something like that to our Springer. We would say, Where do you go?, and he would just walk into his crate. :rolleyes: Each way works for each family. Man, how did this get into a talk about how to raise our dogs? LOL |

If I had one pet yorkie it would probably be different. But, raising show dogs is much different. You're raising them to Champion and improve the breed when you breed them. It's just a different way of life, my whole life revolves around my dogs. They love traveling, even after they've been championed, and I'm showing another, they hear me loading up the equipment and they get excited, thinking they're gonna go. I do take turns taking one of them, especially if I'm only showing one dog. |

I have another question...I just read an article about Corgi's saying that when the milk comes in and can be expressed that whelping can be expected within 24 hours? Is this true of Yorkies? :D |
