Should new pup nurse immediately? First pup out but mom is giving up. I took sac off but pup not nursing and momma not helping?? |
oh no.... I have no idea, but I think he may need help then with the nursing  |
Does the pup not want to nurse or is mama not letting him? Our second didn't nurse for almost an hour after she was born, and when we were at the vet, she said the pup would be fine, as long as she nursed when we got home. If you can get him to latch on, it will help stimulate contractions. How is mama feeling? |
is there a breeder near you you can call if you dont get a responce fast enough on here? your vet maybe? |
momma is just exhausted, she is just lying their. i got pup to latch on a few times. I wonder how long until i can expect the second one. three more to go. |
We are awaiting delivery #4. The first 3 didn't latch on right way, I think it was about an hour before they figured it out. Good luck! |
do not know of a breeder near me. my vet is closed but i will call the hospital if i need to. i got pup to latch on a few times. momma just wants to lay their. i wonder how long before the second one should come? i have three to go |

yes i do. It arrived alittle while ago. its been 30 minutes. hopefully it works. |
The first puppy usually take a lot out of them and they just need to rest a bit. Sometimes mine have gone 1 to 3 hours between pups. As long as mom is not straining and pushing then she should be fine. Sometimes the pups don't nurse right away and sometimes they nurse immediately. Just make sure they are warm and breathing well. If you have Nutri-cal give the mom some of that. If you don't have Nutri-cal then give her some Karo syrup mix with a little water. You can give that to her with a eye dropper or syringe. |
I gave momma nutri-cal and the first pup is nursing. Its been almost 2 hrs since first one. Now I can a bubble about 1 inch as if another is coming. Momma is not straining or pushing. Why is it stopping and coming out all the way. Should i assist or wait |
Deb . . .OMG . ..I missed the first one . . .ok, so has she pushed this 2nd one out yet or is there still just the water sac there? |
shes not pushing second one out yet. it look like its out about 1/2 to 1 inch out but nothing is happening. Its been this way about 10 minutes. momma is calm. i thought once they started to come out it would continue all the way out. |
I dunno Deb . . .it would only start coming out when she contracted . . so apparently, she isn't having a hard contraction yet? The sac is still intact, right? What can you see . . . |
I found this info. . . The allantoic sac appears as a fluid filled bubble at the lips of the vulva at some point in the early stages of labor. Let it be- don't pull on it. That won't help anything- it will break on its own in it's own time. Its appearance usually indicates the start of serious labor. Usually within 15 to 60 minutes the bitch will have hard frequent contractions stimulated by the first puppy coming up into the pelvic canal. In hard labor the bitch will visibly strain and groan- she may stand up and strain as if defecating. Hard, frequent contractions should result in a puppy within 30 minutes. Has she had any more nutri-cal or tums? |
yes i see the sac intact. Sadie just tried pushing about 5 times, nothing happening. |
no more nutri-cal. How often can I give it to her? |
I think a little bit every once in a while if you see that she doesn't have much energy . . .but she is trying to push so it'll probably be on its way soon . . .is she really straining hard to get it out, like it's stuck? Or her contractions just started again? I've only watched a cat give birth and from what I remember it took around 20 - 30 minutes for the 2nd kitten to come out after presenting . . .how did the first pup present? Was it quick after you saw the sac? |
yes very quick |
A breeder told me that a little vanilla ice cream was great during labor, b/c it gives them a little glucose for energy, hydration, and calcium. My girl loved it during labor - it was the only thing she would take, and I swear within 5 or 10 min. she seemed to get a little boost of energy. :p |

Cassie's sac tried to come out with the pup, and I had to get her attention back there, so she would make it pop. Once she did, the pup had some room. |
Deb, how is Sadie doing? Still pushing? |
yes she is. I just gave her one bite of ice cream. |
How is your first little one doing? Boy or girl and has it latched on? |
First one a boy and he was latched on but Momma has be contracting for while now. I wish the second would come |
I'm trying to find someone on here that has experience in whelping . . . Congrats on the little boy :D  How long has it been since the first one arrived? |

Man, I wish I could help. My first one was 13 days ago, and pretty text book. I'll do the only thing I can do - pray! |
2nd one out its a boy. its hard for me to move them around their still intact?? and momma's not helping at all. |
They are still attached by the cords? Are the placentas coming out too? If she isn't biting the cords, you might have to assist . . .is that what you mean by intact? |
